Lent 2017
Welcome Welcome to Music at Barnard Castle School This Lent term our efforts until half term are about preparing Cole Porter s spectacular show, Kiss Me Kate. Years 7,8 and 9 are putting together the Lower School Musical with Katie Harpin directing, and I am delighted to be working as the musical director. I hope you will join us in Big school on the evenings of February Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9. A collection will be taken, that will go towards the Music Department s chosen charity, Children in Crisis. You are all invited to attend the regional finals of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition which holds it qualifying heats in the Sixth-form Centre, on Sunday January 22. It will begin at 10.30am, and it will be an opportunity to hear some of the best musicians in the region, as well as some of our own talented Barnardians. At half-term on Valentine s Day, the celebrity soprano, Penny Randall-Davis will be giving a vocal recital entitled Schumann and Love. This will include a performance of Schumann s wonderful song-cycle, Dichterliebe, as well as songs written by Schumann s wife, Clara Wieck. Jill Cole and Philippa Dearsley will also read correspondence between Schumann and Clara Wieck. An interval Valentines supper will be served, and tickets will be available from the general office for 15. After half-term our Tuesday lunchtime recital series will begin again, and the Chapel Choir will be singing Evensong in Durham Cathedral on Monday February 27. One of the hottest tickets this term will be the Windband s Progressive Dinner and Jazz which will include a cash-bar, a light hot supper, and the incredible Mick Donnelly All-stars Jazz line-up, as well as the Barney Jazz Café, where singers will perform jazz standards with Dearsley s Jazz Trio, while you eat. Tickets will be available from the general office 15. The Barnard Castle Choral Society meets every Thursday at 7:30pm during term time, and this term are preparing to do a joint concert with the Chapel Choir and Barney Singers performing Glorias by Vivaldi, Poulenc and Rutter. Everyone is welcome, we start on January 19th. Simon P Dearsley Director of Music 1
