About The Music: EMILY (The Ghost) is an original comosition based on a aranormal sirit that is resonsible or mysterious and noisy disturbances. Emily reveals her resence by moving and mislacing obects, making loud noises, interering ith electronic equiment, and turning lights and other electrical aliances on and o at random. She is a sirit ho enoys the conveniences o the st century and has chosen to visit you and your beginning concert band. Droing a heavy chain onto the loor should scare your audience and that is hat it is meant to do! I ossible, kee the chain hidden rom sight so that hen it dros it ill truly be a loud and noisy disturbance, announcing Emily s resence. The lutes reresent Emily as other sections in the band randomly click their instrument s keys or unscreed valves or blo air through the instruments ithout buzzing to make a hooshing sound. These extramusical sounds hel reveal Emily s various antics as the lutes continue her laintive melody, later oined by alto saxohone and then the otional bass line in octaves. The dynamics in this iece add to the mysterious doings o Emily. The really loud unctuation by the bass drum should be layed as dryly as ossible so there is no ring to the sound. Exeriment ith mallets to ind the one that orks best or you, reerably a hard mallet. The chromaticism reresents her eeriness and is also an excellent chance or your young layers to ork on the chromatic scale. Check to make sure the ingerings are all correct. The glissandos in the bell art should be very raid and scary. A brass mallet is reerred. The ending reresents Emily s release rom this orld into the sirit orld here she belongs. The cornets/trumets add oen iths (C G), the clarinets add the ninth (D) and the descending assage in the lutes, otional oboe and alto saxohone leads to the maor third, E natural. The ind chimes should be layed ith a ast see rom lo to high and alloed to ring. The inal to glissandos by the bells allo Emily s sirit to leave our orld. or added drama, you might ant to have certain lights go on and o during the erormance o this iece. I that is not ractical based on your erormance venue, you might ant to add lights onstage that go on and o at random, assuming the audience is unable to see anyone actually turning them on and o.
