Better Call Saul - AMC Premiering on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 9:00 p.m., Breaking Bad s deplorable and adorable ambulance chaser had to start somewhere. This prequel to one of the greatest TV series of all time tells the story of criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), picking up six years before the events of Breaking Bad, back when Goodman was known as Jimmy McGill. Expect to see the return of some familiar faces from Breaking Bad including Jonathan Banks Mike as McGill evolves into Albuquerque s greatest defender of scum. Cross your fingers for cameos from Walt and Jesse. Leap Second Coming June 30 Last month, the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service stated that we re all living about a second ahead of where we should be. The IERS announced that the leap second will take place on June 30. The problem is that the computer software controlling much of the Web doesn t work well with leap seconds. The previous leap second took place in 2012 and affected sites like Reddit, Yelp, LinkedIn, FourSquare and StumbleUpon, among other sites. The code for most Web apps is based on Unix software that goes back to 1970, which was two years before leap seconds began. Computers check in from time to time with the IERS network to make sure that they are telling the time correctly. When leap seconds happen, IERS tells computers that the last minute of that day will have 61 seconds. Unix-based software doesn t know how to use this information. Leap seconds are necessary because the length of a day and year is in constant flux. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have a tendency to slow down the Earth s rotation, as do gravitational forces from the Moon and other celestial bodies. There have been 25 leap seconds since they were introduced in 1972. But some groups have been looking to get rid of leap seconds. At the next meeting of the standards-setting International Telecommunication Union, nations representatives will vote on abolishing the practice. Leap second opponents say the benefits don t outweigh the technological mishaps that they cause. Even if there were a leap second every year, the Earth would only be 16 minutes behind schedule in the year 3015. Keep up with Entertainment and Technology news. In Our Community Gone Fishin The at 511 Commercial Street will be serving fish during Lent every Friday, starting February 20th through April 3rd, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Meal includes french fries or baked potato, coleslaw, bread and butter, and a choice of fried pollock, shrimp, or Icelandic cod (fried or baked). Cost ranges from $8.00 to $12.00, depending on what type of fish is selected. Dine in or carry out. The club will also be selling wood grain banquet tables (8 x 30 wide x 29 high) for $20 each. The free club meets every Monday through Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at the Marseilles Firehouse. Everyone is welcome to come and participate at their own level. This free club uses a series of DVD workout programs that incorporate many styles of activity. We walk on nice days and enjoy each others company! Invention Convention The Marseilles Elementary Grade School is hosting its Invention Convention in the multi-purpose room from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2015. This is an annual event with the 7th grade science students. Everyone is invited to come out to see the inventions the students create! Big Game Vegas Nite The will host its annual NFL Big Game Vegas Nite on Sunday, February 1, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. at 511 Commercial Street in Marseilles. Menu includes fried chicken, spaghetti, ravioli, salad, bread and dessert. Cost is $10 per person. Dine in only. There will also be draft beer and fun games of chance. Valentine s Day Dinner The Marseilles American Legion Women s Auxiliary is having a Valentine s Day Dinner on Saturday the 14th of February. The bar will be open and some tasty appetizers will be offered during a social hour from 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and consist of a tender, delicious rolled loin of pork stuffed with a savory dressing, hot mashed potatoes and gravy, colorful vegetables, cool velvety apple sauce, sweet and tangy cranberry salad, fresh baked breads, and many mini desserts. There will be NO CARRY OUTS available. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Marseilles American Legion Post on Friday bingo nights, from an auxiliary member, or at the door. This fine dinner will be enhanced by music from our new sound system. There will be a 50/50 drawing and a chance to win some nice gift baskets.
