ALTERNATE FORMATS: None RELATED HOLDINGS: James Whitcomb Riley Collection (M 240); Edmund H. Eitel Papers, 1851-1920 (M 0628); also many Riley works held in printed collections. ACCESSION NUMBERS: 1993.0116, 1995.0703 NOTES: Collection to be cited as Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Riley Collection, 1835 1960 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), "The Hoosier Poet", was born in Greenfield, Indiana, the third child of attorney Reuben A. Riley and Elizabeth (Marine) Riley. Riley left school at the age of sixteen and started reading law in his father's office. After working for several newspapers in central Indiana, during which time he had his first poem published in 1870, Riley accepted a position with the Indianapolis Journal in 1877. While with the Journal, Riley covered routine assignments and wrote poetry in his spare time. Riley had his first poems in book form, "The Old Swimmin' Hole" and "Leven More Poems," published in 1883 under the name Benj. F. Johnson of Boone. After his initial success, he signed a contract with Merrill, Meigs and Co.--later Bowen-Merrill and finally Bobbs-Merrill. In addition to writing popularity, Riley was in demand on the lecture circuit, and he spent a significant portion of his time traveling across the country reading his poetry. Riley established residence in Indianapolis in 1893 and rented rooms from attorney Charles L. Holstein at 528 Lockerbie Street, where he lived the rest of his life. He was also rather helpless in practical matters such as finances and keeping schedules, and because he never married, he relied on friends and relatives to take care of managing his life. Marcus Dickey acted as somewhat of his manager and he lived with Henry Eitel, an Indianapolis banker, for ten years. Eitel later married Riley's sister. Although many traditional literary critics found Riley's dialectic style of poetry distasteful, he was immensely popular with common people and children. Riley's literary honors included several honorary degrees, membership in the American Academy of Arts & Letters, and in 1912, he became the first poet to be honored with a gold medal from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1911, school children across the country organized a birthday celebration in his honor that evolved into an annual event known as Riley Day. Edmund H. Eitel ([1887]-1960) was the son of Henry and Elva Riley Eitel and the nephew of James Whitcomb Riley. He was the subject of one of Riley's poems entitled "The Knightly Rider of the Knee." A Shortridge High School graduate who later earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from Cornell University, Eitel began his professional career with the Union Trust Company in Indianapolis. He took some time off at the time of his uncle's death in 1916, and acted as Riley's literary executor. He worked with Laurence Chambers at Bobbs-Merrill in the production of the standard biographical edition of Riley's works. In 1955, Eitel presented the Indianapolis Public Library (later Indianapolis Marion County Public Library or IMCPL) with a gift of 100 volumes of Rileyanna. Eitel also served in the Naval Aviation Service during World War I. After the war, he worked for the Fanstiehl chemical and radio business in Chicago, and later moved to Baltimore where he was employed by Oriole Refrigeration. In the 1950s, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he founded an executive placement service. Sources: Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, pp. 1195-1196 James Whitcomb Riley Collection Guide (M 0240)
