MAGIC STI Service Multiplexer & Audio Encoder MAGIC STI General The DAB Digital Audio Broadcast System is a broadband system which allows the transmission of various programmes (Audio and Data services) from one or more Service Providers in a common programme block. Every Service Provider should be able to configure, control and monitor individually, its own programme. An example for this is the transmission of traffic announcements, which is very difficult to realise in classic DAB networks. Therefore, special requirements for the multiplexing of the different components are necessary. The implementation of these requirements can be achieved using the EN 300797, Service Transport Interface (STI), ETS Standard issued in 1999, which describes the interface between the so called Service Provider and Ensemble Provider. The MAGIC STI System allows - in addition to the transmission of various audio programmes - a simple integration of announcements (e. g. traffic, weather etc.). Also, two data interfaces (RS.232 and X.21) are implemented which support the transmission of STI conforming data channels as provided by the Service Information Multiplexers from "Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Erlangen" or "the Institut für Rundfunktechnik". The programme provider has with MAGIC STI, a Service Multiplexer with integrated DAB Encoders. The complex management of various Audio and Data Services is supported and simplified by a Windows NT graphical user interface. STI Service Multiplexer as per EN 300797 with integrated Audio Encoders as per EN 300401 (Layer II) with analogue Audio inputs 2- Mbit/s, T1, X.21 and ISDN telecom interfaces Expandable to a maximum of 10 Audio Encoders using MAGIC Extension Systems Data interfaces for external STI data Windows NT Configuration and Controller Software Optional: Digital AES/EBU Audio inputs with sample rate converter Fully compatible with the DM-001 STI Ensemble Multiplexer from Rohde & Schwarz Seamless audio transmission during reconfiguration 5

MAGIC DAB/STI with 1+1 Redundancy DAB Redundancy General The MAGIC DAB/STI Audio Encoder systems allows a full 1+1 redundancy. With this feature the Service Provider can be sure that any error in the system will cause an automatic switch-over to the redundant system. The switching time without audio is less than one second. The switch-over is also guaranteed if the Service Controller PC is faulty, because both systems are self-controlled. In the case of a fault in the 2-Mbit/s (E1) Splitter/Switch, one of the systems will be switched automatically into the network via a relay. For Service purposes it is possible to manually change between the systems. A special menu in the software allows the actual configuration to be copied from one system to the other (e.g. after repair or exchange of a system). For this redundant operating mode, only one STI licence is necessary. Full 1+1 Redundancy Monitoring without PC Switching time < 1 second Only one STI Licence necessary Synchronisation of both systems Simultaneous configuration of both systems Simple transfer of configuration if a unit is replaced or exchanged 7

2-Mbit/s Splitter/Switch 2-Mbit/s Splitter/Switch General The central element of the 1+1 redundancy is the 2- Mbit/s (E1) Splitter/Switch. This unit splits the STI-C back channel from the Ensemble Multiplexer into both MAGIC systems and switches the STI-C channel of the active MAGIC system to the Ensemble Multiplexer. Use of the LOCAL/REMOTE switch allows the switching over to the redundant system to be made automatically by the MAGIC System or by the input selection switch on the equipment. This manual switch permits a simple choice of the active system, e.g. for equipment exchange. For signalling purposes, the status of the 2-Mbit/s network and the 2-Mbit/s interfaces of both MAGIC systems are shown via the following control LEDs: Ordering Information 2-Mbit/s Splitter/Switch 490063 incl. Please be aware of this when ordering. Only one licence is required for operating a redundant system. 8

MAGIC ETI Decoder Listening/Monitoring Decoder MAGIC ETI Decoder General The MAGIC ETI Audio Decoder systems can be used for the monitoring of DAB signals at every location in the ETI distribution network. The systems can be connected anywhere in the 2-Mbit/s (NA, G.704 and NI, G.703) signal to be monitored or can be connected in parallel with the signal path. Consequently, all Audio programmes in the data stream are monitored and an individual programme can be extracted and decoded. The Audio signal can be output as an analogue or optionally, as a digital (AES/EBU) signal. Switching among audio programmes is simply made by keys on the front panel. Three relay outputs are provided for external signalling of faults. The possibility of extracting a single programme from the DAB Ensemble provides provides a cost effective Audio programme supply for non-dab applications without the need to use additional transmission lines. Thus, FM Audio programmes can be transmitted to transmitter locations and audio programmes can be inserted into cable networks. Using the supplied Windows software for the control of the systems, a detailed error detection can be achieved and the content of the ETI data stream can be decoded. All relevant information, such as 2-Mbit/s alarms, number of sub-channels, types of sub-channels etc., can be displayed. Applications of MAGIC DAB/STI products Service Controller Software For the operation of a STI Service Provider System the Service Controller Software MAIN MANAGER, is necessary. This enables an easy configuration and monitoring of the system. Reconfigurations can be done by mouse clicking. An easy control of the program sequence for live data reconfigurations is implemented as well as the possibility of transmitting announcements (traffic information, weather broadcasts, etc.) at the push of a button. The integrated FIG Encoder allows a simple development and editing of FIGs. All implemented actions and error messages are stored in a log file. The STI Controller Software runs under the Windows NT operating system. Applications 13

Service Provider STI Audio Decoder Applications Each Service Provider is able to encode up to 8 Stereo Audio programmes with the MAGIC STI system according to his requirements. The individually encoded Audio data, PAD (Programme Associated Data) as well as additional inserted data channels (N-PAD) with STI format and announcement information FIGs (Fast Information Groups) are combined and multiplexed into the STI norm by the Service Multiplexer integrated into the MAGIC STI system. The STI Data Stream (STI-D) is transmitted to the Ensemble Provider together with the control channel (STI-C). In all cases, the communication from all Service Providers to the Ensemble Provider is bi-directional via the STI-C control channel. Through this procedure, reconfigurations can be registerd and transmitted for example. The reconfiguration request is confirmed by the Ensemble Provider over the STI-C back channel.the connection of individual Service Providers can be made via 2-Mbit/s lines (MAGIC BASIC DAB ENCODER) and ISDN (MAGIC ISDN DAB ENCODER). Ensemble Provider The data streams of all Service Providers involved in one Ensemble are connected to the Rohde & Schwarz DM-001 STI-compatible DAB Ensemble Multiplexer. This Ensemble-Multiplexer builds a joint data stream (ETI) of all programs. The stream can be transmitted to all transmitter locations. The software of the Serviceand of the Ensemble-Multiplexers was developed together, to guarantee an optimal operating safety. Also with regard to the graphical user interface the same input dialogues were realised when possible. Of course NON-STI Service-Provider are supported as well. For the control of individual programmes, the MA- GIC STI AUDIO DECODER can be connected to the outgoing STI 2-Mbit/s data stream. The monitoring decoder monitors all encoded Audio programmes simultaneously and can decode a single Audio programme. An audio programme to be decoded can be selected by the keys on the front panel or by the Windows user software. Two potential free, relay contacts are available for alarm signalling (2-Mbit/s alarm and ISO/MPEG Decoder alarm). The monitoring decoder can be installed at any point in the complete contribution network. ETI Audio Decoder In contrast to the MAGIC STI Audio Decoder, the MA- GIC ETI Audio Decoder can be used for monitoring and fault localisation at the output of an Ensemble Multiplexer. Similar to the STI option, one of the Audio programmes contained in the ETI data stream can be decoded and monitored. The possibility of accessing one of the programmes of an DAB Ensemble allows a cost effective audio program distribution for non-dab applications without need for using separate transmission lines. Thus FM audio programs can be transmitted to transmitter sites and audio programmes can be inserted into cable networks. Pre-Multiplexing For more efficient use of the 2-Mbit/s lines, the MA- GIC COMPACT i2-mux/2m can combine several Service Providers for feeding to the Ensemble Multiplexer. Also, non-dab Services can be transmitted via the same channel, such as e.g. FM Audio programmes. 14

A development of PadMUX32 PAD Data inserter PadMUX 32 General The PadMUX32 enables the feeding of additional data into DAB programmes. The user friendly user interface for Windows NT /2000 /XP enables fast configuration and selection of services for DAB. A development of SchedMAN Schedule Manager for PadMUX32 General Included in the delivery Through SchedMAN data flow is defined for different DAB data services (MOT services). The desired raster for the PadMUX32 is created via a database. It only requires to be copied to any number of week days and SchedMAN automatically takes over control of the timing. For special days such as bank holidays, the possibility to generate an individual daily grid exists. The switching over of the PC s system clock is used for this purpose. If only a single PAD channel is available, chronological division within this channel is possible with SchedMAN. The program sequence can also be edited by an editorial PC. Presently, all MOT Sources, which are manually adjustable in the PadMUX32, can also be switched automatically via SchedMAN. The software is available as a 32-Bit version in addition to the AVT PadMUX32. MMDS DAB Multimedia Data Server General The MMDS is used for feeding PAD (Programme Associated Data) and N-PAD (non Programme Associated Data) into a DAB Ensemble or Service Multiplexer. The system runs under the Linux operating system. However, the configuration is carried out using a standard Browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator running under any operating system. Data can be fed over the TCP/IP interface. In this case, the data communication takes place immediately (helpfull e.g., for D-GPS data, Dynamic Labels and Slide shows and other applications with real time requirements.) Libraries are included for the insertion of Dynamic Labels and Slides for Linux and Win 32 (Windows 98/NT /2000 /XP ) systems. Some data services (e.g. Broadcast Web Site, Slideshow or Dynamic Labels) can be transferred over ftp, ftp-mirror or HTTP-mirror to the MMDS. These are then stored in the MMDS and sent out in a cycle. Data that is stored in the MMDS is controlled according to the user's specification. A connection to the MMDS is then needed only for updating of the Data services. The Provider needs only standard software, e.g. an ftp-client and a telnet program. Knowledge of the Linux operating system is therefore not necessary. The DAB Multimedia data server can be remotely configured and kept up to date. The high end version of the MMDS includes an ISDN Terminal Adapter or an analogue modem (for dialled up connections to the content Provider/ MMDS administrator), a network card (e.g. for importing data over LAN or Internet) and a multiple serial interface card for the acquisition of the data. The MMDS is set up as a server for adapting the data from different Content Providers to different PADS, N-PAD (Packet Mode Data), Audio and/or Stream Mode Channels. As a server, it is delivered as a 19" Industrial PC with hard disk mirroring capability. User Applications Broadcast web site (HTML site) Slideshow Dynamic labels (HTML site) for test purposes D-GPS (Differential Global Positioning System) TPEG (Traffic and Travel Information) MPAD (Motion PAD: ISO/MPEG Layer 2 audio combined with H.263 low data rate motion video pictures. MAGIC DAB/STI Training Practice The DAB Digital Audio Broadcast System is a broadband system which allows the transmission of various programs (Audio and data services) from one or more Service Providers in a common program block. Every Service Provider should be able to individually configure, control and monitor its own program. The transmission traffic announcements can be used as an example. This is very difficult to realise in classical DAB networks. Because of this, special requirements for the multiplexing of the different components are necessary. The implementation of these requirements is defined in the EN 300797, Service Transport Interface (STI) ETSI Standard issued in 1999, which defines the interface between the so called Service Provider and the Ensemble Provider. Target group: DAB system planners and broadcast managers Requirements: basic knowledge of DAB, PC knowledge Aim of the seminar: Planning of DAB networks with MAGIC systems Configuration and administration of a Service Provider Compilation of individual reconfigurations Independent troubleshooting and fault clearance MAGIC DAB/STI Training Contents: DAB Basics DAB networks NON-STI and STI MAGIC DAB Systems Service Controller Software Practical Exercises Fault clearance No of participants: max. 6 participants Duration: 2 days Location: AVT GmbH Nuernberg Times: 1st day: 11.00-17.00 Uhr 2nd day: 9.00-16.00 Uhr Miscellaneous: included: beverages, lunch, seminar documentation and Certificate of Attendance issued by AVT Audio Video Technologies GmbH Ordering information MAGIC DAB/STI Practice Single entry (min. 2 participants) 100056 Group entry (max. 6 participants) 100057 23
