Different structures such as verb forms, sentence structure, connectors, determiners, pronouns, prepositions, causes, phrases etc., can be tested through formative assessment over a period of time. As far as the summative assessment is concerned, it wi recyce grammar items earnt over a period of time and wi test them in context. Tests types used wi incude gap-fiing, coze (gap fiing exercise with banks at reguar intervas), sentence competion, recording word groups into sentences, editing, diaogue-competion and sentence-transformation. Though marks have been aotted specificay for content, they shoud not be awarded in a mechanica manner. For instance, if a student has merey mentioned the vaue points (content) as per the marking scheme, the examiner shoud assess whether the content has been expressed/ communicated in a coherent and cohesive manner. It means content and expression are perceived as interinked aspects of writing. Simiary in a the writing tasks credit shoud be given to creativity in the ream of ideas and anguage use. What it means for the examiner is that students who think differenty and are abe to use the anguage with feicity in terms of structures as we as vocabuary shoud be given due weightage. This need not necessariy be seen as eaning towards subjectivity in marking. A proper baance of content, expression (accuracy, fuency, cohesion and coherence) and creativity woud encourage students to aim for higher standards in written communication. Errors in speing, punctuation and grammar shoud be penaised to the extent of marks aotted for accuracy.(i.e. the penaty shoud not exceed 2 marks). Grammar: Grammar items mentioned in the syabus wi be taught and assessed summativey as we as formativey over a period of time. There wi be no division of syabus for Grammar in the summative and formative assessments for the terms. Grammar wi be tested by recycing grammar items earnt over a period of time in a comprehensive manner. Teachers may adapt this suggested distribution for cassroom teaching making modifications according to their specific needs. Simiary Formative Assessment of grammar items may aso be carried out in an integrated manner aong with the skis of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening as we as Literature. Note: 1. Read the foowing passage carefuy: (10 marks) Our house is fied with photos. They cover the was of my kitchen, dining room and den. I see our famiy's entire history, starting with my wedding, continuing through the births of both sons, buying a home, famiy gatherings and vacations. When my sons were itte, they oved to pose. They waved, danced, cimbed trees, batted bas, hung upside down from the junge gym and did anything for a picture. But when they reached adoescence, picture-taking changed into something they barey toerated. Their bodies were growing at haphazard speeds. Reuctanty they stood with us or with their grandparents at birthday ceebrations and smied weaky at the camera for as short a time as possibe. I am the chronicer of our photographs. I seect those to be framed and arrange the others in abums. The process is addictive, and as the sheves that hod our abums become fuer and fuer, I wonder what wi become of them. Wi anyone ook at these photographs in future years? If my sons ook at them, what wi they think of us and of themseves? One bright afternoon, I took some photographs of my father with my husband as they fished in a ake near our vacation house. As my sons and I sat on the shore and watched them row away, I picked the camera up and photographed the beautifu ake surrounded by green trees. The fresh juice of raw papaya mixed with honey can be appied over infamed tonsis, for diphtheria and other throat disorders. It dissoves the membrane and prevents infection from spreading.
