Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Wednesday, September 30, 8:00 p.m. For its return to the Fisher Auditorium stage, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will present a special program that includes works by Bach and Beethoven, plus a side-by-side performance with select IUP student musicians performing Suite 1 from Grieg s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 and Borodin s Polovetzian Dances. Among the top orchestras in the world, touring four continents and producing multiple albums, the PSO continues its long-time partnership with IUP. Always one of our more popular events, this concert marks the PSO debut of their newest resident conductor, Francesco Lecce-Chong. A post-concert reception, sponsored by IUP Dining, will be held in the Crimson Café. L.A. Theatre Works Dracula Thursday, October 8, 8:00 p.m. This gothic tale of horror, debuting in 1897 with little fanfare, has become a classic for all time spawning hundreds of spin-offs from Twilight to True Blood. In Charles Morey s acclaimed adaptation of Bram Stoker s original, Count Dracula slips quietly into Victorian London with a cargo of his native Transylvanian soil, necessary for rest between his victims. The city seems helpless against his frightful power; and only one man, the smart and resourceful Dr. Van Helsing, can stop the carnage. Performing this blood-curdling story in unique radio-play style with live sound effects, L.A. Theatre Works brings us an audience experience and intimacy like no other. CALJE Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble Wednesday, October 21, 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, 2nd Floor Sutton Hall As a special visit to help celebrate International Education Week and Hispanic Heritage Month, CALJE the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble brings an intimate, hot rhythm, one-night-only performance to Gorell Recital Hall. Through its fusion of traditional Cuban rhythms and modern Jazz harmony, CALJE explores new music based on Dominican Merengue, Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena, Spanish Flamenco, and Jamaican Reggae. These talented musicians will fill the hall with what JazzTimes magazine s Rebeca Mauleon describes as a wonderfully diverse repertoire of new and highly creative music. 3

Cantus Saturday, November 7, 7:00 p.m. Early Curtain! The Star Tribune has described Cantus as an intellectually, emotionally, and musically rich nine-member men s vocal ensemble. The a cappella ensemble is known worldwide for its trademark warmth and blend as well as for its engaging performance of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Cantus has grown in prominence with its distinctive approach to creating music and unearthing rarely performed repertoire for men s voices. While in Indiana, the ensemble s members will work with upwards of 100 high school and community male singers to provide a choral finale of epic proportion. National Tour... Direct From Broadway Ragtime: The Musical Thursday, November 19, 8:00 p.m. With its original production winning Tony Awards for Best Book by Terrence McNally and Best Musical Score by Pittsburgh native Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, this 13-time Tony Award -nominated musical is a timeless celebration of life. The stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician unfold, set in New York as the 20th century begins all three united by their desire for and belief in a brighter tomorrow. Their compelling stories are set to theater s richest and most glorious awe-inspiring score. Genghis Barbie Saturday, January 23, 8:00 p.m. Genghis Barbie, the self-described post post-feminist feminist all-female horn experience, came onto the music scene just five years ago and has never looked back. The quartet, which includes Danielle Kuhlmann, Alana Vegter, Leelanee Sterrett, and Rachel Drehmann, has risen to fame by performing arrangements of rock, pop, and classical hits. The group has 24 combined years of conservatory training, delivering a visceral and unadulterated musical adventure that has pleased audiences from Carnegie Hall to America s Got Talent. 4

Direct From Japan Drum TAO Seventeen Samurai Tuesday, February 9, 8:00 p.m. Experiencing Drum TAO s performance has been likened to watching an actual conversation through the ancient Taiko drums on stage a visceral experience in the truest sense of the word. Feeling the hypnotic power produced through primal percussion, audiences speak of their senses pulsating long after the performance ends. Touring annually across the globe and direct from Japan, Drum TAO combines music, choreography, humor, and showmanship with the traditional art of Japanese drumming. RIOULT Dance NY Tuesday, February 23, 8:00 p.m. Founded in 1994 by Pascal Rioult, RIOULT Dance NY quickly became an established name in modern dance. The New York Citybased dance company has a reputation for presenting the sensual, articulate, and exquisitely musical works of Pascal Rioult. In addition to a piece from its regular repertoire, the company will perform the family-friendly Fables with re-imagined costumes, lighting, and choreography set to new music by Paul Salerni. The work will also incorporate several dancers from the community and IUP. National Tour... Direct From Broadway Mamma Mia! Wednesday, March 2, 8:00 p.m. With more productions playing internationally than any other musical, Mamma Mia! is the world s number-one show. This sunny, funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother s past back to the island they last visited 20 years earlier. The story-telling magic of ABBA s timeless songs from Dancing Queen to S.O.S. to Winner Takes It All propels this tale of love, laughter, and friendship, with everyone having the time of their lives. Direct From Russia Moscow Festival Ballet Swan Lake Monday, March 28, 7:00 p.m. Early Curtain! Professional ballet returns to Fisher Auditorium after a 15-year absence as the Moscow Festival Ballet performs Swan Lake. The tale of a prince and his love for the beautiful Swan Queen, trapped by an evil curse, is performed to the classic score by Peter Tchaikovsky. Through a case of mistaken identity, the Prince almost marries another girl who looks similar to the queen. The troupe was founded in 1989 by principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Radchenko, bringing the highest classical elements of Russian ballet to the stage. American Tapestry Thursday, April 14, 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, 2nd Floor Sutton Hall American Tapestry, led by pianist Robin Spielberg, combines songs that have become woven into the American culture with new music melodies that, as described by Music Road, suggest a hand of comfort and connection from past to present. The songs are ones that you grew up singing, and your parents and their parents grew up singing. Through music and storytelling, American Tapestry s Indiana appearance will present a special focus on the music of the past 200 years in celebration of Indiana Borough s bicentennial. 6 Arnaldo Cohen Tuesday, April 26, 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, 2nd Floor Sutton Hall On the prestigious roster as a Steinway Artist since 1982, Arnaldo Cohen comes to help us celebrate IUP being an All- Steinway school. Cohen has been cited as one of the world s greatest living pianists and is a fluid, dynamic musician with an extravagant dexterity. He came to prominence after winning First Prize at the 1972 Busoni International Piano Competition and making his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Cohen has established himself with a highly successful international career, dazzling audiences with his orchestral appearances and solo recitals. All Ovations! events are by reserved seating. As the two piece together their project, they discover the puzzling beauty of our interconnectedness as humans. Gabriel s Dream Directed by Holly Boda-Sutton October 23-24, 7:00 p.m. October 25, 2:00 p.m. Zink Hall Dance Theater Gabriel s Dream tells an original story through movement and the music of Peter Gabriel. The image-provoking lyrics of Gabriel s music unfold to reveal a world in which the audience shares in a man s journey. Gabriel s Dream will be performed through the talents of the IUP Dance Theater, in the newly renovated Zink Hall Dance Theater. She Kills Monsters By Qui Nguyen Directed by Michael Hood November 5-7 and 11-14, 8:00 p.m. November 8, 2:00 p.m. Waller Hall Mainstage, IUP Performing Arts Center In She Kills Monsters, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen creates heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all. When Agnes finds her sister Tilly s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles upon a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in an imaginary world filled with homicidal fairies, dark elves, and lazy demons that was Tilly s refuge. This play contains themes, violence, and language to which some audience members may object. The Hairy Ape By Eugene O Neill Directed by Michael Schwartz February 18-20 and 24-27, 8:00 p.m. February 21, 2:00 p.m. Waller Hall Mainstage, IUP Performing Arts Center The Hairy Ape is Eugene O Neill s examination of finding a place in a world grown increasingly isolating and divisive. O Neill s anti-hero, the ship stoker Yank, is violent, impulsive, bigoted, and severely limited in his options by his class and attitudes something he does not realize until his humiliating encounter with a beautiful young steel heiress, Mildred. Yank s desire for revenge on Mildred ignites an expressionistic journey of self-knowledge and alienation as he realizes that his sense of self was never real. This play contains themes and language to which some audience members may object. 8

Carmina Burana Directed by Holly Boda-Sutton, Ryan Beeken, and Michael Kingan By Carl Orff April 9, 7:00 p.m. The IUP Dance Theater combines forces with the vocal arts, piano, and percussion areas of the IUP Department of Music, bringing to life a visual and exciting new interpretation of this monumental work. The production promises to tell an original story through dance set to Orff s classic and grand masterpiece. This nonstop, hour-long performance thrill ride features the IUP Chorale, accompanied by a thrilling orchestral reduction performed by pianist Henry Wong Doe and backed by the IUP Percussion Ensemble. The hit musical comedy follows six irrepressibly unique and overachieving middle school students and their equally quirky parents as they learn the valuable lesson that winning isn t the only definition of success. This production may not be appropriate for younger children. The Magic Flute By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Directed by Oliver Lo October 31, 7:00 p.m. November 1, 2:00 p.m. Mozart s genius is supremely evident in his last opera as a fairytale is matched with some of the most stunningly beautiful music ever written. From the fireworks of the Queen of the Night to Pamina s anguished lament, to the comic love of Papageno and Papagena, the music illustrates Mozart s unique and profound understanding of humanity. Directed by new music faculty member Oliver Lo, this universally loved opera will be sung in English. Cabinets of the Curious: Art Historians Collect August 27-September 24 Annex Gallery, Sprowls Hall This opening exhibit showcases an eclectic variety of selections from the congeries of the art history faculty at IUP. Included in the exhibition are objects from Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, the Pacific Northwest, Mexico, Indonesia, and the U.S., including contemporary jewelry, paintings, collages, and photographs by listed artists. Delicate Membrane September 10-October 8 Artist Talk September 10, 5:00 p.m. Reception to follow Kipp Gallery, Sprowls Hall This two-person exhibition features the work of fiber artist Josephina Concha and the sculptural jewelry of Daniel DiCaprio. Both artists draw inspiration from micro and macro elements found in the natural world, and their unique creations at once appear synthetic and organic. Beethoven s op. 18 no. 1 is his first published quartet and includes a movement based on the sword fight scene from Romeo and Juliet. Op. 132 is one of the composer s last works and includes the famous Heiliger Dankgesang, a song of thanks for renewed health. ArtsPath provides arts-in-education services to a five-county region in schools, organizations, and other areas where the arts are used in an educational setting. Through artist residencies, master classes, lectures, demonstrations, and various workshops, thousands of area school students, IUP students, and community members interact directly with a variety of professional performing and visual artists. ArtsPath, under the Lively Arts umbrella, is a consortium of area educators, administrators, students, residents, and civic leaders. The mission of ArtsPath centers on promoting high-quality arts experiences, establishing the use of art in education across all curricula as a priority, offering regional services, generating communitywide and regional support, and promoting the arts classroom teacher as integral to a student s complete education. If it is an event to which you are already subscribing, there is no limit to the number of additional seats you may purchase (for single-ticket prices, call the Lively Arts or check the Flex Pak form). Exclusive exchange privileges for multi-performance productions if your plans change, provided that seats are available and the Lively Arts receives your tickets for exchange at least 24 hours in advance. All About Subscriptions and Tickets The Lively Arts continues to keep ticket prices incredibly low a fraction of what you would pay, for example, in Pittsburgh for the exact same production. There are three basic subscription package choices that are designed to fit your needs. The deadline to order your subscription is Monday, August 31. Ovations! Subscription Subscribe to all 12 Ovations! events and you will save at least 15 percent off the single-ticket price. It s easy, and it gives you all the variety offered in the Ovations! series, securing your reserved seats before the season begins. You will save up to $65 per Ovations! subscription. Totally Everything Package One of the most popular packages for more than 20 years, this gives you a ticket for every event and still saves you at least 15 percent off single-ticket prices. You will get to see all 12 Ovations! events, along with the other events presented by Theater-by-the-Grove, Dance Theater, Music Theater, and Sound Choices. You will save up to $84 per Totally Everything subscription package. Flex Pak: Pick 8 The Flex Pak is something that may just fit your needs perfectly. Order at least one ticket to at least eight events, and you re done. The ticket price is the same as the single-ticket price, but you get all of your tickets up front before they go on sale to the general public. Let us know if you have questions or need assistance. 14 How Is Your Order Filled? All orders will be acknowledged by e-mail or telephone within 10 days. All subscriptions are filled and seats assigned in the order in which requests are received. Premiere Club members contributing $250 or more receive exclusive priority through July 24 and top priority after that. When Are Your Tickets Sent? We will begin sending printed tickets no later than August 31, well in advance of the first subscription event. I-Card Information You may purchase up to four subscriptions per I-Card and must provide your I-Card number when ordering. To receive the I-Card price, your activity fee must be paid for the upcoming academic year before August 28. Reserved and General Admission Seating All seats for Ovations! events are reserved. Seating for Theater-by-the-Grove, Dance Theater, Music Theater, and Sound Choices will continue to be by general admission. For the Ovations! series, balcony seating will not be available for Dracula. Purchasing Single Tickets If you are not subscribing to any of the subscription plans, single tickets will be available approximately one month before the event or before the start of a multiperformance production. Single tickets may be purchased online through iup.edu/livelyarts, at the Hadley Union Building, or by calling the HUB Box Office at 724-357-1313. Tickets remaining for any performance are sold at the door starting one hour before the performance. Single-ticket prices and the dates they will be available are posted on our website.

Info...Info...Info Accessibility As of this fall, all performance and exhibit venues, including Zink Hall Dance Theater, are fully accessible to patrons in wheelchairs. ADA accessible parking is also available in the nearby Grant Street parking garage and other areas in proximity to the Performing Arts Center and other venues. Patrons who need wheelchair access for venues in and around the Performing Arts Center and Sutton Hall may be dropped of in the area on 11th Street adjacent to the Crimson Café, Clark Hall, Sprowls Hall, and Cogswell Hall. We will no longer be able to provide a drop-off area along Oakland Avenue. Because You Deserve the Best! Free and Easy Parking With the IUP Grant Street parking garage, it s easy to attend every on-campus Lively Arts event. All spaces other than those marked as 24-hour reserved spots in the garage are available to the general public free after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. The Lively Arts never charges for parking. Construction Update By the start of the 2015-16 season, direct access from the Parking Garage to Gorell Recital Hall and the University Museum in Sutton Hall should be fully restored. Construction in the area of the Performing Arts Center and the new Humanities building should be complete by January 2016.
