Mainz COLOVIEW System Set for colonoscopic examination and biopsy in mice and rats Animal models are needed to investigate the pathogenesis and therapies of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and colon carcinomas in man. The most common animal models for this purpose are mice and rats. One of the greatest challenges in this type of research has always been the examination of colon cancer pathogenesis in the living animal. Periodic endoscopic examination of the bowel in humans is the most important criterion for diagnosis and staging of these diseases, as well as following their progression. Until now, this type of endoscopic evaluation was not possible in mice and rats. Superior optics in a miniaturized endoscopic system are required to adequately visualize the small lumen of the murine intestine. Together with a group of researchers from Mainz University, we have developed a system which makes this endoscopic examination possible and highly effective. In addition to visual examination, during each endoscopic procedure we can also collect biopsies for histologic and molecular evaluation without sacrificing the animal. This represents a big step in the research of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and colon carcinomas, as well as the testing of newer local or systemic therapies for these diseases. 2
