Mechanical and Heat-shrinkable Closures 9

Closures for Copper Communication Networks Introduction General With the world s largest range of closures, Corning offers a complete line of solutions for connecting and distributing all types of communication cable. Closures are used to provide protection for splices on straight, branching and distribution cables. The mechanical and electrical continuity provided by the closures must be as though there had been no break in the cables at this point. This requirement applies regardless of the location of the cables, e.g. buried directly in the ground, installed in ducts or on aerial cable routes type of cable, e.g. pressurized or grease filled design of the cable, e.g. with laminated sheath or armoring. The mechanical continuity is achieved by strainrelieving (anchoring) the cable sheaths. The electrical continuity of any armoring or metallic foils in laminated sheaths is provided by a high-quality, low-resistance bond to ground bonding lines. It is provided to protect the installers and the electronic equipment from possible overvoltages which these cable elements may develop from external sources and then discharge. In addition these bonds can be joined to external grounding points. The Closure Range Closures are generally classified according to their design into mechanical and heat-shrink types. Mechanical closures comprise rigid closure tubes or domes with one or two end caps for the cable entrances. The sealing between the closure components themselves and to the cables is made by means of plastic compounds such as sealing tapes or gels or by silicone seals. Pressure is applied to the seals mechanically, i.e. with clips, hooks or screw fasteners. Mechanical closures can be re-entered and closed as required for maintenance or system expansion purposes. The main product of this type offered by Corning is the range of Universal Closures UCN, designed specially for the pressurized primary cable network and hence to withstand maximum stressing. There are also various solutions available for the nonpressurized secondary network, e. g. within the MHS range. Heat-shrink closures comprise heat-shrinkable sleeves which are wrapped around the splice and the cable ends. The closure is shrunk down using a gas torch to contract uniformly around the splice and the cable ends. An adhesive coating, also thermally activated, on the inside of the sleeve ensures an effective seal. There are different types of heat-shrink closure available for both the pressurized primary network and non-pressurized secondary network. 10

Closures for Copper Communication Networks Mechanical Closures General Corning offers a complete range of mechanical closures for all applications in the copper telecommunication network. The core product of this range is the Universal Closure UCN, the mechanical closure most widely used in the world. More than eight million UCN are in service in pressurized and non-pressurized networks. The UCN is designed as an inline closure with incoming cable(s) on one side and outgoing cable(s) on the other side (straight joint). A modified UCN called UCNC is available as a butt closure with canister and one end cap which accommodates all cables fed in on the same side. Another special application of the UCN is the UCNV (UCN vault closure) which is used in exchange offices for connection of the trunk cable to the MDF cables. Further Closure Types As completion of the UCN range, further closure types are available: Type MHS P for pressurized and non-pressurized high-pair cables Types UCA, MHS M and BPR for non-pressurized low- and medium-pair cables Type PEV (free-breathing) for use on nonpressurized aerial cables Type MEP for temporary non-pressurized applications Mechanical closure UCN Features Access to splice area as often as required without the need of spare parts and consumables High-quality sealing material guarantees watertight encapsulation of the splice area Closure housings made of plastic which withstand high mechanical load Easy and fast installation without additional energy e.g. gas or electricity Re-opening and re-closing of the closure very simple to handle Reliable strain relief systems integrated in end caps No harmful substances are used Designed for at least 30 years lifetime The special features of the different types are described on pages 16 to 46. 14

Closures for Copper Communication Networks Heat-shrinkable Closures and Repair Sleeves Application Heat-shrinkable Closures Heat-shrinkable closures are used in communication cable networks, particularly in the distribution network, as inline closures for protecting and sealing the splice areas of copper cables. They can be used on cut and uncut cables for straight and branch splices. Up to 4 cables can be led into each side of the closure. The following series of closures are available for nonpressurized cable networks: Reinforced closure GSC, GSC C Standard closure SCX, SCX C For pressurized cable networks Corning supplies the reinforced closure GSC CP with tightness testing valve. Repair Sleeves Used for repairing of damaged cable sheaths. Reinforced repair sleeve GSC R Standard repair sleeve SCX R All RXS closure types and repair sleeves are suitable for direct buried installation and aerial application. Heat-shrinkable closures GSC CP, GSC C, GSC Features High mechanical strength Reliable sealing of the splice itself and of the sleeve to the cable sheath against moisture with hot melt adhesive Simple installation, only gas torch for installation required (torch set see page 61) Only a few different sizes required for all cable diameters Designed for at least 30 years lifetime No harmful substances are released during processing The special features of the different heat-shrinkable closures are described on pages 47 to 60. 15

Inline Closure UCN Description Design Application Universal Closures UCN are designed to protect straight or branch splices on high pair count copper cables against environmental influences. The closures can be installed on cut or uncut cables and are suitable for direct buried, aerial and underground installation. They are suitable for pressurized and nonpressurized cables. The Universal Closure UCN consists of two plastic end caps and a plastic closure tube. The two-section end caps incorporate the strain relief that absorbs the mechanical forces which may be applied to the cables. Three-piece end caps are available to accommodate a higher number of cables. Two metal bars interconnect the two end caps. On-site hand-drilling of the cable entries provides flexibility with regard to cable diameter, number and arrangement of the cables. During installation of the end caps, the strain-relief disks are automatically pressed by two aluminum collars onto the cables. The compression guarantees excellent resistance against push and pull. The longitudinally split closure tube is closed with two plastic bars. They are pushed on by a hammer and are secured with pins. Permanently elastic longitudinal and round sealings allow the closure to be opened and re-closed as often as required without the need of consumables. Each UCN is equipped with test valve and external grounding device. Special Features Large variety for all cable types, splice configurations and connectors Individual adaptation of the cable entries on site by drilling the end caps according to number of cables and their diameters Quick re-opening and re-closing of the closure tube without the need of special tools Re-usable closure sealings No outside metal parts mean no danger of corrosion Strain relief system integrated in the end caps UCN: Easy installation with clamping bars 16

Vault Cable Closure UCNV Description Design Universal vault cable closures are available in two variants: 1. Complete UCNV vault closures (3 different sizes) with all components necessary for installation in one closure package. 2. Individual distribution end caps (2 different sizes) to be combined with the well-known UCN universal closures. To produce the desired vault closure, a suitable UCN closure with a corresponding capacity has to be selected and one of the end caps included in the UCN closure package has to be replaced by the corresponding vault cable end cap. Application Universal vault closures UCNV serve to distribute outdoor trunk cables onto indoor distribution cables within exchanges. There, the vault closures can be installed in any position in cable vaults or other spaces. The size of the vault closure to be used depends on the number of distribution cables to be led out, as well as on the number of pairs and the conductor crosssection. For special requirements, RXS also offers a flameretardant closure of the type UCN FR. The material used complies with UL 94 V0. This version meets the requirements for flame-resistant closures to Bellcore TR-NWT-001058. The UCNV vault closures comprise a two-section plastic end cap for the trunk cable, an aluminum distribution end cap with the appropriate number of cable entries with rubber sealings for the distribution cables and the longitudinally split closure tube, as well as the necessary installation accessories. Unused cable entries are to be closed with dummy plugs. Adapter plugs are available to adapt the cable entries for smaller cable diameters. Special Features Designed as vault closure in non-pressurized cable networks One end cap suitable for accommodation of max. 20 distribution cables Strain relief for trunk cable is integrated in the end cap No corroding external metal parts No special tool required for opening or closing 22

Inline Closure UCA Description, Kit Content Design The UCA is designed as a half shell closure with resilient silicone gasket. The half shells, with a hinge molded on one long side, are closed with stainless steel clips. The clips can be closed by hand and levered open again with a screwdriver. To impede unauthorized access to the splice compartment, an anti-access device is available as an accessory. Application The UCA closures are designed to protect splices at straight and branch joints on communication cables in unpressurized secondary networks. The closure can be assembled on all common copper cable types. It is suitable for cut and uncut cables and can be directly buried in the ground or installed in manholes and on aerial cable routes between and on poles as well as on walls. Special Features Very fast access to the splice by use of clamps, without influencing the cable entry areas Four pre-fabricated cable entries Half shell closure with resilient sealing of the half shells permits unlimited re-entry of the closure Shells closed with clips that are closed manually and merely require a screwdriver to re-open Installation without special tools The cable entries are sealed with the proven sealing tape which is pressed by wedges against the bottom shell. Unused cable entries are sealed with dummy plugs. All mechanical stresses from outside on the cables are absorbed by strain-relief elements which are latched into the bottom shell. The electrical interconnections of the cable sheaths are also connected on these strainrelief elements. If required, the closure can be supplied with external grounding device. For tightness testing the closure can be flash-tested with up to 150 kpa / 15 min. air pressure, using a valve inserted in the top shell. After the test the valve is replaced by a sealing screw. Inline Closure MHS M Description Design The lower half shell of the MHS M accommodates the cable splice. The upper half shell covers the splice area. At the ends of the shells two closing parts are used for covering the cable entry areas. In case of reopening only the upper half shell has to be removed whereas the cable entry areas remain unchanged. Sealing of incoming and outgoing cables is achieved using sealing tapes and one or two twists of tapes around the cable. The seams between the half shells and the closing parts are made watertight with sealing tapes, too. Application Straight and branching closure for non-pressurized copper cable networks with up to 4 cable entries per closure side. Application area: in manholes, in the ground, on poles and on aerial cables. Strain-relief elements prevent push in or pull out of the cables. These elements are placed beside the sealing elements and can be cut according to the cable diameters on site. The two half shells and the two closing parts are very tightly joined by non-corroding screws. Features Reliable sealing of the closure due to age-resistant, plastically sealing tapes Strain relief elements in the cable entry areas easily adapted to the cable diameters (onion ring system) External metal parts made of non-corroding material Quick and easy installation without the need for special tools or additional power source 34

Aerial Closure PEV Description Design The closure consists of two end caps and a closure tube. The end caps are split in two sections to take uncut cables. The cable entries are designed as ringshaped segments, like onion rings. They can easily be removed with a knife which is part of the kit. Each end cap has two cable entries. Sealing tape wrapped around the cables prevents ingress of water. Two plastic connection bars link the two end caps together. Application The free-breathing PEV closure is designed as a straight or branching closure on aerial cables. For use on cut and uncut cables. Mechanical forces from the cables are absorbed by serrated plastic parts which are connected with the end caps. These parts are pressed onto the cable sheaths by non-corroding metal hose clamps. The free-breathing split closure tube is closed by simply latching into position. The closure is fastened to the messenger wire by mounting devices. Features The PEV closure guarantees an excellent protection against climatic influences in tropical countries. The ventilation principle prevents humidity concentration, independent of air humidity and temperature changes. Cable entries individually adaptable on site Quick re-opening and re-closing without additional material For use on cut and uncut cables 44

Temporary Splice Protection Closures MEP Application The MEP closure is mainly used for temporary applications if cable splices have to be made only for a short time e.g. on construction sites, fair grounds or for cable repairs. They are also used if splices have to be sealed up to the final installation e.g. as overnight closure or under bad weather or environmental conditions. The use of MEP should not exceed 2 weeks in a manhole liable to flooding. Design Two half shells serve as splice housing. At the ends these half shells are filled with gel which forms a watertight seal around the incoming and outgoing cables. Additionally a gel sealing tape is wrapped around the cable to improve the sealing effect. The seams between the closure halves are also sealed by gel which is filled in grooves along the sides of the half shells. 1 To close the MEP the half shells are pressed together until they are latched. The MEP is fixed on the cables with cable ties. 2 Kit Content 3 1 Half shells 2 Gel sealing tape (one for MEP 1, two for MEP 2) 3 Cable ties Dimensions Type Usable Inner Length Total Outer Length Inner Diameter Outer Diameter [mm] [mm] [mm] [mm] MEP 1 277 368 40 44 MEP 2 490 610 77 83 Cable Diameters, Order Numbers Typ max. Reinforced Heat-shrinkable Closures GSC, GSC C, GSC CP Description Design The reinforced closures have been developed to meet increased demands in cable networks. For this purpose, a PE net has been integrated in the heat-shrinkable sleeve. This considerably increases the split resistance during shrinking and its mechanical strength. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hot-melt adhesive which guarantees a watertight and secure bonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables. A temperature-sensitive paint on the sleeve indicates that sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. The closure kit consists of the heat-shrinkable reinforced sleeve with closing channel, a protective liner or a canister, a shield connection lead and installation accessories. Application GSC For non-pressurized cable networks - with flexible protective liner. Accessories for Branching Closures Branching kit in three different sizes which is required for each branching cable. GSC C For non-pressurized cable networks - with metal canister as protection for increased mechanical strength. GSC CP For pressurized cable networks - with metal canister and test valve. Special Features High split resistance due to integrated PE net Environmentally friendly sleeve composition out of PE laminate and PE net No ingress of water into the homogeneous composite material Very high mechanical strength of sleeve composite No cable strangulation due to regulated shrink force of the sleeve No overheating of cable conductors due to reduced heat during the shrinking process Insensitive to sharp flame settings 47

Standard Heat-shrinkable Closures SCX, SCX C Description Design In contrast to the closure series GSC the sleeves of the closures SCX and SCX C are not reinforced. The sleeve of these closures is made of one PE layer. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hotmelt adhesive which guarantees a watertight and secure bonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables. A temperature-sensitive paint on the sleeve indicates that sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. The closure kit consists of the heat-shrinkable sleeve with closing channel, a protective liner or a canister, a shield connection lead and installation accessories. Accessories for Branching Closures Application Branching kit in three different sizes which is required with branching closures for each branching cable. SCX For non-pressurized cable networks - with flexible protection liner. SCX C For non-pressurized cable networks - with metal canister as protection for increased mechanical strength. 54
