SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT SABBATICAL REPORT FORM This form must be completed and submitted with the narrative report within 60 days of the faculty member s return to duty. Submission of a final Sabbatical Report is a component of the sabbatical process. (See SOCCCD 2004-2007 Academic Employee Master Agreement, Article XXVI, Section K-1, Upon completion of the sabbatical and within sixty (60) days of the faculty member s return to duty, a narrative report shall be submitted to the Sabbatical Committee for Review and acceptance (or non-acceptance). COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING: 1. Name: Dr. Daniel Luzko 2. College: Irvine Valley Fine Arts Division/School: Music 3. Period for which your sabbatical was granted: 4. Narrative Report Academic year: 2012-13 Fall Spring Both x Please attach a narrative that addresses each of the following: A clear record of the activities pursued Activities pursued during sabbatical: I. Composing original music: "Clarinet Concerto" in three movements (Attachment I) II. Contemporary Piano Program (Attch. II) Additional activities: III. Performing and rehearsing a full youth orchestra concert as conductor, including works by IVC student Jonathan Gerrard and Dr. Daniel Luzko (Attch. III) IV. Directing festival "Paraguayan Talent USA" in two US cities (Miami and New York) (Attch. IV) V. Attending two international music festivals (Poland and Switzerland) (Attch. V) VI. Composing "Volatile" for piano solo (Attch. VI)

Evidence of these activities (please attach transcripts, copies of papers written, etc ) See attached documents sections I, II, III, IV, V, and VI A discussion of the impact of these activities on teaching and learning 1. Improving teaching techniques: In order to teach students to compose, it is extremely important to maintain the flow and ability to compose works of music oneself. This ability requires the time and determination to do so. During this sabbatical the opportunity to make this happen was possible. The results: composing a three-movement work now available for performance. In addition, I composed a piano solo piece "Volatile." This experience will help enrich IVC students' by showing perspectives and possibilities to resemble this process within their future compositions. 2. Extending music repertoire: For a long time it has been my great desire to learn contemporary masterworks of piano music in order to present them at the IVC concert series. The first one was scheduled on September 29th, the second on October 15th, the third on May 15th, and last on May 18th of the academic year 2013-14. All these are IVC cultural events featuring the repertoire achieved during this sabbatical. 3. Guest Conductor to a Youth Symphony Orchestra: Activities included managing weekly rehearsals during a full month as well as selecting and preparing repertoire. Artists included IVC student composer Jonathan Gerrard, who travelled and attended the performance. Other artists in the program included two talented students from Paraguay: a violinist, Ramiro Miranda and a pianist, Pedro Yegros. 4. Musical Director of International Festival "Paraguayan Talent USA" in two American cities: Miami and New York: This multitasked activity included selecting renowned artists living in Paraguay and the US, as well as preparing programs, fundraising, and logistics in lodging, transportation, receptions and more. 5. Attending International Music Festivals: "Chopin to Gorecki" in Warsaw, Poland where I worked with mentors learning and performing works of music in master classes. "46th. Montreux Jazz Festival" in this festival I participated as an audience of the Piano Jazz Festival, meeting the judges and participants who had a major performance at the event and its organization.

A discussion of the impact on the faculty member s professional development My 2012-13 year-sabbatical granted me the possibility to develop my abilities as a composer and performer in order to improve my teaching techniques. My professional development has been enhanced by invaluable opportunities such as being an active composer producing works of music. Moreover, I was able to enrich my piano repertoire through an intense training as a performer of compositions written by renown composers such as John Cage, Andrzej Dutkiewicz, Diego Luzuriaga, and Modest Mussorgsky. In addition, I was able to work with young musicians and coordinate their showcase in high level concert performances not only in the US, but internationally. As an example, I was able to give the opportunity to an IVC music student to showcase his musical composition in an orchestral concert in Asuncion, Paraguay. The IVC student, Jonathan Gerrard, was able to attend the rehearsals and performance of his work. In addition, I was invited to hold the title of "Musical Director" of the third edition of an international festival "Paraguayan Talent USA" where I coordinated important activities such as artist selection, programming, fundraising and other logistical duties. Finally, I attended two music festivals in Europe Chopin- Gorecki in Poland, and Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland experiencing new performance perspectives in professional and challenging environments for young and adult performers from all over the world (Australia, Germany, Norway, England, Norway, Cuba, China, South Korea, and many other countries). Demonstration of the benefit of these activities to students and the district My students will be able to receive instruction based on experience in the musical "real world." I will be able to enrich my teaching by implementing the techniques I learned during my sabbatical year in important musical centers: Europe, South America and the United States. Besides performing abroad, I plan to demonstrate improved techniques not only in teaching, but also in performing at planned events in our community.

Ic. Mentor feedback 1 December 2012 Daniel, Wow, this all looks great! So much fun. I can't wait! Before I start to dig in more, I was wondering how attached you were to the key signature in the part? Would it be possible to take it out? I know some notation programs automatically put it in when you extract a transposed part, of course. But there are many accidentals anyway that I think it would read better with no key signature. Let me know what you think. I myself would prefer to learn the part with no key signature. I also have some other questions and ideas. Mostly just notation stuff -- certain enharmonic spellings make more sense to a clarinetist, etc. Congratulations again!! We'll talk soon! Lea Steffens Hello Daniel, So exciting! I can't wait to see it and get started. Congratulations!! Talk to you soon, Lea Steffens
