December 2017 A monthly publication of your Muskingum County Library System Winter Reading Challenge In January 2018, your Muskingum County Library System will participate in the inaugural nationwide Winter Reading Challenge. We challenge our patrons - of all ages - to read for at least 300 minutes during the month and to share their reading activity with us online. Over 100 other public libraries across the nation will encourage their patrons to read 50,000 total books over the course of 1 million minutes! If we all reach the nationwide goal, Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban will donate $25,000 to the organization First Book which provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need. You can get ahead of the game and pre-register yourself and your family for the program at www.muskingumlibrary.beanstack.org and start tracking your activity today, but books and time won t count towards our goal until the new year! Safety. It s frequently on my mind, as it may be on yours as well. mall talk Swith pillman Over the past 20 years, I ve worked for large urban public libraries, small academic libraries, and libraries in between. I have served a diverse patron base from infants to age 105, from Turkish to Vietnamese, from Spanish to English speaking, from traditional to non-traditional families, from homeless to wealthy...and I could go on and on. A prevailing theme and constant priority spreading across all of these library systems has been the importance of safety for both library users and library staff. Providing and maintaining a welcoming and secure environment for every person in our community to checkout books, to read to a child, to work on a project, to ask for help, to attend a program or story time, is a top priority we take seriously here at the MCLS. Above the old McIntire entrance to the Carnegie Wing, built in 1908, are the words, Open to All. The MCLS is a place where all library card holders and non-library card holders are free to enter our buildings and use our services and resources; however, we do have an expectation that all customers will behave with the utmost respect for each other and for our library spaces. At the MCLS, we provide training for library staff on current safety issues, what to look for in potentially disruptive situations, and how to manage them. It is an unfortunate day when we have to ban a patron for a specified amount of time due to misbehavior, but it does happen on occasion so we can maintain safety for all. Library staff are scheduled to walk around the library as they aim to provide excellent customer service to library users and also monitor behaviors. We utilize security cameras inside and outside the library and, furthermore, now have a relationship and partnership with the City of Zanesville Police Department. Through a supportive conversation with the Chief of Police, Tony Coury, we will be experiencing a stronger presence from the Zanesville Police Department to help maintain a pleasant and safe environment at the library. My goal is that all members of our community will feel safe in our library facilities. If there is ever a time when you don t feel safe or are uncomfortable for any reason, I encourage you to approach a library staff member or give us a call so we can address your concerns. I can t guarantee that every visit to the library won t be without a small level of uncomfortableness on occasion, but I CAN guarantee we are constantly working on providing safe library spaces for the patrons of the Muskingum County Library System. For those of you who haven t visited us in a while, we invite you to visit us again and experience all we have to offer. Have a safe and happy holiday season!
