Competitors participate in this Brisbane Eisteddfod according to all rules and guidelines listed and any other rules and conditions specific to Events as listed in the Individual Schedules. 2. The Event Management Team (EMT) reserves the right to allow variances of all rules and guidelines at their discretion. The EMT reserves the right to decide on any matter not covered by all listed rules and guidelines. Decisions of this nature will be deemed final without further question. 3. Volunteers and Adjudicator(s) are not permitted to advise, interpret or vary any rules or guidelines. The EMT will not accept responsibility for any outcome arising from such unauthorized actions. 4. Entries must be received by Brisbane Eisteddfod Administration prior to the close date of each Event. Entries must be completed correctly, comply with all rules listed in associated Event schedules and be accompanied by full fees including program cost or they will not be processed. Responsibility for correct entry rests with the entrant. The Eisteddfod cannot be responsible for entries lost through failed electronic transmission. An entry acknowledgement receipt will be sent to the email address provided on the entry form, confirming the Event(s) entered and fees paid. Entrants must contact the Eisteddfod if this acknowledgement is not received within 3 days of lodgement. Entrants are advised to check the details carefully and notify the Eisteddfod immediately of any errors, including spelling of names, etc. Corrections cannot be made after final timetabling. 5. All Eisteddfod correspondence is via email. It is the entrant s responsibility to ensure that Brisbane Eisteddfod emails are not blocked by spam filters. 6. Entry Fees and Program costs are not refundable except when an Event is cancelled. Entry fees and program costs cannot be transferred to another Event should entrants change their mind after final timetabling for the initial entry. 7. Entries submitted after the commencement date of the Eisteddfod will be subject to an additional (late) fee of $25. Late entries are only accepted without obligation, subject to final timetabling and capacity. 8. Purchase of an Event Program is compulsory and is added to the invoice at the time of entry. Teachers submitting entries for individual students must include the cost of an Event Program for each student, except where students share the same family address. Event Programs will be mailed 14 prior days to the Event commencement date. In the case of non-delivery of an Event Program the entrant will be provided with an equitable replacement. 9. Please email admin@brisbaneeisteddfod.org.au if the Program has not arrived within seven days of Event start date. 10. The EMT will not be responsible for any breach of Copyright, Royalty or Privacy laws. 11. The Venue and surrounds are SMOKE FREE! 12. A high standard of decorum, behaviour and professionalism is expected at all times. Unseemly, aggressive, abusive or unsportsmanlike behaviour is contrary to the spirit of the Eisteddfod and will not be tolerated in any form. The EMT will deal with any issues of this nature, as it deems appropriate. 13. In the interest of fairness no competitor will be allowed to perform if they have had professional contact with any adjudicator(s) in the six months prior to the start date of the Eisteddfod. 14. Personal communication with or other representation to the adjudicator(s) by competitors, teachers, parents, friends or associated parties is strictly prohibited and may result in disqualification at the Committee's discretion. 15. The Adjudicator(s) may exercise discretion and withhold one or more prizes in any section. 16. The Adjudicator(s) reserve the right to terminate a performance at any time within the rules and guidelines of the Eisteddfod. The Adjudicator(s)' decisions are final. 17. The EMT reserves the right to appoint substitute adjudicator(s) if circumstances require. 18. Awards and prize money will be allocated as per the Schedule. 19. The EMT reserves the right to alter or amend the Program in any way. Sections may be combined or cancelled as deemed necessary. 20. Private videography or photography with any device is prohibited at all times in the Auditorium. Videography and photography in dressing rooms must comply with the guidelines of the Information Privacy Act. 21. Practice or rehearsal is not permitted on stage at any time during the course of the Eisteddfod. 22. No person will be permitted to enter or leave the Auditorium during a performance. 23. All mobile phones/devices with screens must be turned off within the Auditorium. 24. A protest of any nature must be made in writing and lodged with the EMT within one hour of the conclusion of the section in which the disputed matter arises. Protests will attract a $25 fee. The fee is refundable if the protest is upheld. Any protest will be referred to a Protest EMT for settlement and the resulting decision will be final and accepted without further question. 25. The EMT will not be liable for personal items lost or stolen during the course of the Eisteddfod. Lost property will be held for a period of one month after the final day of the Eisteddfod. 26. TICKET SALES: Tickets are non-refundable. All patrons (including children 3 years & over) must hold a valid ticket. 27. Brisbane Eisteddfod Inc. COMPETITOR INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO VOCAL ACCOMPANIMENT: Unless otherwise stated, all sections are to be performed with accompaniment. This may be: 1. acoustic accompaniment (e.g. piano, guitar, etc); or 2. a recorded backing track 3. Either acoustic accompaniment or recorded backing is acceptable for ALL categories except the German Lieder which must have a piano accompanist.. A piano (or keyboard) will be provided at the venue as will Playback equipment for the recorded backing (mp3). A competitor may accompany themselves in ANY Category. COPYRIGHT: It is important that all competitors and teachers realise their responsibilities regarding laws under the Australian Copyright Act 3rd edition 2006 for both sheet music and recorded backings. This year there is only one AMCOS form, which covers copyright of your copies for both the adjudicator and your accompanist. MICROPHONES: A microphone will be provided at the venue for use in any category. Microphone use for each category is at the digression of the performer. MUSICAL STYLE: Generally we have Classical and Contemporary styles of categories indicated in section decriptions. OWN CHOICE SONG SELECTION: There are no set pieces for the Vocal Event. Singer/Songwriter sections are for performance by the Entrant of the Entrant s own original song. Entrant to have composed both the music and lyrics. RECORDED BACKINGS: Singers are responsible for providing their own accompaniment backing tracks where appropriate (please note COPYRIGHT paragraph). The Recorded Backing MUST NOT HAVE RECORDED VOCALS in any part (lead, backing or harmony). The recorded backing must be in the form of mp3 and sent to the Vocal Convenor at least 7 days before the start of the Vocal event. The mp3 of the Recorded backing should be named as follows: Section number (e.g. BV1)_Competitor number (for that Section)_Song title. SAMPLES: BV7_A_12_When_we_were_young BV67_12_A_Thousand_Years There is a wide range of software such as Dropbox, Google Drive, WeTransfer or Hightail to send your files to the Vocal Convenor. SHEET MUSIC: Competitors are reminded that 1 copy of your music is required; one for the Adjudicator. Lyrics are required for Singer/Songwriter Category. The copy for the adjudicator MUST be marked clearly with the section number and the competitor s number but NOT the competitor s name. You should bring your sheet music to the event on the day of competition - or you may also email this sheet music to vocal@brisbaneeisteddfod.org.au - clearly marked as above. To cover your sheet music copyright obligations, you will complete the AMCOS Form and present it on arrival at the event. (refer to COPYRIGHT paragraph). The Eisteddfod Committee has the right to destroy any photocopies immediately after adjudication. At the conclusion of the performance, any original music provided to the Accompanist will be returned to the entrant. TIME LIMITS: Time limits must be strictly adhered to. When using an accompanist a warning bell will sound when the time limit has been reached. When using a recorded backing, the backing will be stopped 20 seconds after time limit is reached. Time Limits are as specified in the Section listings within the Schedule. If a competitor goes over the time limit, they may be penalised. RULES SPECIFIC TO VOCAL Entrants and Sections 1. Performances are for soloists unless a section indicates otherwise. 1. A person may perform only ONCE in the SAME section. 2. A different item is required for each section. 3. Time limits normally provide for the presentation of ONE ITEM unless section requirements stipulate otherwise. They are strictly monitored and entrants exceeding the time limit will be eligible for 'comments only' - not for a placing. 4. Registration and performance rules are strictly enforced. 5. Age is as at 1 st JANUARY. 6. Entrants must conform to section age limits. Random age checks will be made and entrants must carry a photocopy of their birth certificate or school ID with their date of birth. 7. Entrants perform at their own risk. Entrants agree they are of good health and fitness, and physically able to participate in a section. All care will be demonstrated, but no liability will be accepted for any injury sustained whilst carrying out that performance. 8. In case of insufficient entries in any section they may be combined with similar sections. 9. Duos or groups must be entered on one entry form only and all names of the performers are to be included. 4

Accompaniment 1. Unless otherwise stated, all sections are to be performed with accompaniment - Either Backing Track or Live Instrument, 1. A competitor may accompany themselves in any section. 2. Singers are responsible for providing their own accompaniment backing tracks - must be sent in via email at least 7 days prior to the event. 3. The Recorded Backing should be in the form of mp3 and MUST NOT HAVE RECORDED VOCALS in any part (lead, backing or harmony). In the case of a recorded backing having vocals on it, the entrant will receive feedback but will not be eligible for prizes. 4. If there are any instrumental sounds, which could be mistaken for 'the human voice, please inform the Vocal Convenor when submitting your mp3. Any protest on the day of the competition about vocals on recorded backing must be lodged immediately with the Vocal Convenor so that the mp3 can be checked before adjudication 5. Brisbane Eisteddfod Inc. cannot be responsible for recorded backings which do not play through the venue s professional sound system. If the recorded backing should fail during your performance you will be permitted to leave the stage while the backing is checked and start again without penalty. Please wait for Vocal Convenor or Announcer's instructions. 6. Please bring all your backing tracks on USB in case they don t work on the day. 7. The mp3 of the Recorded backing should be named as follows: Section number (e.g. BV7)_Competitor number (for that Section)_Song title. 8. It is the responsibility of the Entrant to ensure they have the right to use their recorded backing. 9. A microphone will be provided at the venue Sheet Music and Own Choice selections 1. Singer/Songwriter sections are for performance by the Entrant of the Entrant s own original song. Entrant to have composed both the music and lyrics. 1. A copy of the music must be provided for the adjudicator no later than one (1) week prior to the start of the Vocal Event. 2. If a properly printed manuscript is not attainable for a particular contemporary piece, a chord chart or, at the least, lyrics must be submitted. Photocopies will not be returned. 3. Failure to provide a photocopy for the adjudicator by the closing date means the entrant may perform, but will be considered as a non-competitive entrant. 4. PROPRIETY: The use of explicit language is prohibited. Singers should avoid items of an overtly sexual or undignified nature. Repertoire/song choices should reasonably reflect the age of the singer and their capabilities. Make-up, costumes and choice of songs should be suitable to the age of the singer and sexually explicit actions avoided. 5. There will be no warm-up or dressing room facilities. Entrants are called from the wings or the audience for all events. 5

DEFINITIONS: (examples of songs are on our website under Vocal) A. Contemporary Vocal Solo - Any Song in the contemporary style and that is not Classical. B. Country Solo C. Musical Theatre Solo D. Australian Composer Solo (Contemporary Style) - Any Contemporary Song by at least one Australian Composer. E. Walt Disney Solo F. Singer/Songwriter - A song in which the lyrics and the music were 100% written by the competitor. The competitor must perform this song. Live backing vocals or instruments are welcome. G. Group (2-5) Contemporary Style - Any Contemporary Song in a group setting up to 5 people. The eldest person is the age range you need to enter. Judged on blending. Harmonies and group work! H. Folk Song - Traditionally composers of folk songs are anonymous, however arrangements by modern composers will be I. Classical Vocal Song - Art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western music rather than a jazz, or popular tradition. J. Art Song - An Art Song is usually a through-composed song for solo voice and accompaniment composed in the K. Australian Composer Solo (Classical Style) L. Group (2-5) Classical Style M. Sacred Song/ Hymn N. Oratorio/Aria - Aria from any Oratorio, Mass or Bach Cantata (Secular cantatas allowed) sung in original language. Preceding recitative, if any, and da capo sections must be sung. Suggested composers (but not limited to): Bach, Dvorak, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Pergolesi, Vivaldi. O. German Lieder - German Art Song - MUST be accompanied by a pianist. Is marked on the partnership with one another. 6
