MUSIC AT CANBERRA GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL Music education at Canberra Girls Grammar School aims to instil a deep love of music in all students. It encourages each student to experience the joy of music, regardless of age or ability, as an integral part of the school curriculum. There is an emphasis on active participation and individual expression and the development of the rich knowledge involved in making music. Music is an important element of our school community. It is a pursuit that both challenges and enriches students through performance and academic study and we have an extensive and diverse Music Program, offering students a broad musical experience by encompassing three pillars for successful music-making. These pillars provide students with an educational experience that develops skills, knowledge, understanding and values. The pillars are: Classroom Music: Classroom music is the foundation on which all music making is built. Classroom music for students in Years 7 and 8 is part of the core curriculum, becoming an elective for students in Years 9 12. Classroom music focusses on developing aural perception, understanding of the musical elements and general musicianship. Performance, composition and musicology form part of each classroom music program. Instrumental Studies: Instrumental studies consists of individual lessons held weekly and conducted by visiting specialist instrumental tutors. These lessons build technical fluency, musical literacy and individual expression. Instrumental tuition is the practical application of knowledge and understanding built in classroom music. Co-curricular Music: Performance groups conducted before or after school and at lunchtime. Students have the opportunity of joining instrumental and/or vocal ensembles. The co-curricular music program is an important aspect of giving back to the school community and provides a crucial social dimension to music making. CLASSROOM MUSIC In Music, students develop listening, literacy and musicianship skills through performance, composition and musicology. Students are introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary music styles using the musical elements. They perform music individually and in small groups and use voice in class activities. Students create original compositions and arrangements using computer software and audio recording equipment. Students also have the opportunity to explore the social, historical and political context of a variety of musical styles. Music classes in Years 7 10 follow the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. Year 7 Music This unit provides an introduction to the study of music through music literacy, listening to a variety of repertoire, performing on a range of instruments, including their Year 7 Band or String instrument, and composing. It is a concept/ skill-based unit that provides opportunities for an exploration of an integrated approach to the learning experiences. The exploration of musical concepts is emphasised in the unit. In performance, students work toward learning a piece to perform for their parents at the Year 7 Instrumental concert. All students in Year 7 are invited and encouraged to participate in the relevant co-curricular music ensemble, in addition to their class time learning. Year 8 Music This unit has an integrated approach to teaching and learning, particularly in reference to combining music theory and music practice. Outcomes are based on the students acquisition of skills and knowledge in the areas of composition, performing and musicianship. During Year 8, students will develop a greater understanding of chords and scales, song-writing, playing in groups and developing the ability to identify how musical concepts are used in a variety of songs and pieces. Year 9 Music During Year 9, students have the opportunity to explore how Western Art Music has changed over time from the Medieval to the Classical Period. They develop skills in analysing pieces from these times, as well as experience performing and composing in these styles. A variety of pieces from different genres is examined. Students develop greater skills in music literacy whilst building their aural perception, and they develop a deeper knowledge of a range of musical periods. In addition to the study of Western Art Music, students also study the topic of World Music, again, undertaking activities in performing, composing and listening within this topic. Year 10 Music Students in Year 10 build on the skills, knowledge and understanding they have gained in Year 9 Music. They develop this understanding through a study of Romantic Music and Australian Music. These two extensive topics are rich in terms of the genres of music contained in each. This allows for a good variety of pieces and techniques to be studied. Students continue their work in performance, developing both Chamber Music and Solo performances. They develop greater skills in writing down what they hear happening in the music they listen to, as well as further developing their skills in composition. Senior Music (Year 11 and 12) MUSIC (T) The Senior Music course is designed for students who have a strong background in music. Throughout this course, students engage in a range of high level performance, composition and musicology tasks. This course is designed for students who enjoy and are proficient in music, and is an excellent foundation for students who wish to study music at a tertiary level. The course provides explicit instruction, combined with individual and group experiences and provides scope for students to study a variety of musical styles. Two years of continuous music study in Years 9 and 10 (or equivalent) is a pre-requisite for (T) Music. 8 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

MUSIC (IB Diploma Programme) The study of music in this IB course gives students the opportunity to explore and enjoy the diversity of music throughout the world. It encourages students to develop perceptual skills through a breadth of musical experiences, where they recognise, speculate, analyse, identify, discriminate and hypothesise in relation to music. Through performance and/ or composition, students creatively develop their knowledge, abilities and understanding. Music Perception and Analysis is compulsory for all students who take this course. It involves the study of two works, and the study of a wide range of music genres and styles, including historical, contemporary, jazz and world music styles. INSTRUMENTAL STUDIES LESSONS Individual Lessons The Instrumental Studies Program comprises individual lessons held weekly and conducted by visiting specialist instrumental tutors. The Music Department arranges instrumental lessons and allocates teaching studios. The specific scheduling of lessons is made between the Instrumental Studies Tutors, the student and their parents/caregivers. Instrumental Studies Tutors All the tutors who provide instrumental studies lessons at Canberra Girls Grammar School are professional musicians and are not employed by the School. Parents/caregivers are advised that the Music Department acts only as an intermediary, and that there is a legal obligation associated with any Tuition Contract they enter into with their daughter s tutor. Reporting The Music Record Book is an important communication tool between the instrumental tutors and the parents. Students are required to record work covered in each lesson to form the focus for their practice for the week. Students should also use the Music Record Book to record co-curricular repertoire, as instructed by their conductors. CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017 11

Terms and Conditions It is expected that all Individual Lessons Students (ILS) meet the following requirements: Enrolment and Prerequisites Students wishing to receive individual lessons are to complete the online application form by Friday, 2 December. A teacher will then be arranged for lessons to commence in Term 1, 2017. The form can be found on page 30. Late applications will be accepted, processed in order of receipt and are subject to availability. Instrumental tutors will be in contact with parents/caregivers in Week 1, Term 1 to arrange a lesson time. Instrumental lessons will begin in Week 2, Term 1. Students undertaking instrumental lessons at school are required to participate in at least one relevant co-curricular music group. (In 2017, students having piano lessons are exempt.) Students in their first year of individual lessons on an instrument will be placed in a suitable co-curricular group once a satisfactory standard is met. Instrumental tutors will liaise with the relevant Head of Bands/Strings to ensure the student is placed in the appropriate group. Lessons are a full academic year commitment. For each new academic year, both new students to the program and continuing students are required to complete the online enrolment process. Participation/Absence Procedures The majority of lessons for students in Years 7 10 occur during class time on a weekly basis. Students in Years 7 10 have lessons on a rotational basis so as not to miss the same class lesson each week. Students in Year 11 and 12 are strongly encouraged to schedule their lessons during study periods, before or after school or during lunchtime. 12 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

Students will be required to purchase a Music Record Book and are required to bring this with them to each lesson. Students leave class no earlier than five minutes before the start of their music lesson and return to class no later than five minutes of the lesson finishing. Students must sign in on the computer located at the Music Administrator s Office prior to their lesson and sign out before heading back to class. Students are not permitted to leave class for a music lesson when they have scheduled assessment tasks, exams or excursions. These activities are scheduled in advance, so it is the student s responsibility to notify their Tutor at least forty-eight hours in advance of their lesson. If a lesson is not attended for any reason the fee is still applicable. The only circumstance under which a tutor will reschedule a lesson is when it coincides with a scheduled assessment task or other compulsory school event, and the student has given at least forty-eight hours notice. If a student is unwell and cannot attend school on the day of a scheduled lesson, instrumental tutors should be informed as soon as possible. Lessons may be rescheduled depending on availability. However, this should not be an expectation. If an instrumental tutor is unable to attend, every effort will be made to reschedule the lesson. If this is not possible, the fee for that lesson will be credited to the following term. Students may have multiple/extended lesson each week. However, they cannot have more than two half hour lessons per week during class time. If students are having two lessons during class time per week, these lessons should not be during the same academic class in a week or be scheduled back to back. Payment/Discontinuation Instrumental studies lesson charges are set by the tutor and are approximately $42.00 (ex GST) per half hour. Lessons are based on a calendar CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017 13

year, paid for on a term by term basis, one term in advance and payable to the Tutor by the due date, as indicated on issued Tutor Fee Accounts. If parents/caregivers decide to withdraw their daughter from lessons after completing the online enrolment form, or at any other time throughout the academic year, notice must be provided in writing to the Instrumental Tutor and the Dean of Music, no later than the end of Week 7 of the term prior to discontinuation. Failure to do so will incur a penalty of a payment equivalent to one term s fees. 14 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC PROGRAM A diverse variety of co-curricular groups is offered at Canberra Girls Grammar School. Throughout the year, groups participate in Eisteddfods, music festivals, tours and school concerts. Groups also regularly provide musical support for community events, school functions and services. Co-Curricular Music Groups Co-curricular music groups at Canberra Girls Grammar School are formed based upon industry standards for concert bands, string and symphony orchestras, choirs and various style ensembles. These groups are divided into musical instrument and style-related categories. These are Brass, Woodwind and Percussion; Strings; Choirs and Ensembles. Description of Co-curricular Music Groups Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Concert Bands: A concert band is a performing ensemble consisting of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Concert bands have the flexibility to cover many different genres of music, making them engaging and exciting for students. Three of the Canberra Girls Grammar concert bands are auditioned groups, and musicians must take individual lessons for the selected instruments. Ruby Concert Band is open to all new players and does not require an audition. Students move through the concert bands as their skills develop. Instruments flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet (Bb and bass), saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba and percussion. Jazz Band: A jazz band is a musical ensemble that plays many different styles of instrumental jazz and is often accompanied by singers. They include big bands and smaller groups such as trios or quartets. Jazz performers are encouraged to develop improvisational skills. Instruments electric guitar and bass, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone and bass trombone, trumpet, piano/keyboard and drum kit. Please note: The Adelaide Avenue Jazz Band is an enrichment of the concert band program. There is an expectation that students who want to play in the Adelaide Avenue Jazz Band are already a member of a concert band (bass and keyboard players, and vocalists are exempt). Percussion Ensemble: A percussion ensemble is a musical ensemble consisting of tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments. Many styles of music are covered ranging from classical to contemporary. The K.T Percussion Ensemble is open to any students wishing CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017 17

to be involved. Students in this ensemble are not required to be taking individual percussion lessons and the emphasis is on fun and engagement. The Underwood Percussion Ensemble is an auditioned group who perform a wide variety of repertoire. Instruments snare drum, djembe, marimba, auxiliary percussion, timpani, glockenspiel, xylophone, bass drum, bongo, conga. All members of brass, woodwind and percussion groups are expected to practise repertoire regularly and will perform at significant College events and services throughout the year. Strings String Orchestras: String orchestras are ensembles comprising traditional bowed-stringed instruments. These are the violin, viola, cello, double bass and occasionally harp. Students learn to playing five different parts together: violin section, which is divided in to 1st and 2nd sections (purely to allow for two different parts); viola section, cello section and a double bass section (which sometimes doubles the cello part in a lower octave). String orchestras can play a wide variety of styles, from the traditional classical music to more contemporary jazz/rock influenced pieces. Students move through the string orchestras as their skills improve. The Stringy Bach s beginner level to Grade 1 AMEB or equivalent. Alma String Orchestra Grade 2 and Grade 3 AMEB or equivalent. The Holland String Orchestra Grade 4 5 AMEB or equivalent. Sutherland Chamber Orchestra approximately Grade 6 AMEB standard and above and concentrates on music from the professional repertoire. Instruments violin, viola, cello, double bass and harp Celtic Group This group comprises students of all ages who enjoy playing music from a rich Celtic heritage repertoire. The emphasis is on inclusion and learning music from memory. Students learn a diverse range of Celtic music such as jigs, reels and horn pipes and learn different stylistic concepts such as bowing and improvisation. 18 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

Instruments violin, viola, cello, double bass and flute Glanville-Hicks Symphony Orchestra: Canberra Girls Grammar School is the only pre-tertiary school in Canberra to have a full symphony orchestra. The symphony orchestra is for string players who are at Grade 6 AMEB or equivalent and advanced wind and percussion students. This group is the flagship ensemble of the CGGS music program and performs in concerts, school events and eisteddfods throughout the year. Students learn correct orchestral etiquette and concentrate on orchestral repertoire that teaches students how to play in a symphonic way, be part of a team, gain confidence and discipline, and also gain an appreciation of fine orchestral music. Instruments violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, flute, bassoon, oboe, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, percussion, harp and piano, when required. String Quartets: A string quartet is a group of four orchestral stringed instruments. Smaller ensembles such as these are part of the CGGS Chamber music program. Both the Gabriel Quartet and the Emily Quartet learn chamber music from the professional repertoire and learn skills involving teamwork, independence, discipline, sight reading and more advanced music concepts of ensemble playing. These groups perform regularly at concerts and eisteddfods as well as school functions and occasionally outside functions. Instruments violin, viola, cello Guitar Ensembles: A guitar ensemble is a group of guitarists playing together, sometimes with the addition of percussion or bass guitar, depending on the repertoire. Division of parts can be varied, depending on how many musicians are in the ensemble. Usually there are two or more parts. Guitar ensembles can cover a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary. The Williams Guitar Ensemble is an auditioned group for experienced guitarists wishing to extend their ensemble CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017 19

playing. The Kain Guitar Ensemble is open to students who are at a beginner to Grade 3 AMEB or equivalent level. All members of strings groups are expected to practise repertoire regularly and will perform at significant College events and services throughout the year. Choirs Choirs are musical ensembles for singers and CGGS choirs sing a wide range of styles and genres. The Chorale is open to singers from Year 7 12 of any experience and the emphasis is on fun and engagement. The Gabriel Singers and the Bella Voce Chapel Choir are auditioned groups, and in 2017 there will be opportunities for CGGS students to take part in a project based SATB choir. Members of the Gabriel Singers and the Bella Voce Chapel Choir sing at services during the week and at Family and Friends Services once a term on Sundays. Singers in auditioned choirs are also required to be members of Chorale. The Gabriel Singers are the School s premier choral group and high performance and commitment expectations exist for members of this group. Students in the Gabriel Singers are strongly encouraged to take vocal lessons. Coda Conduct provides an opportunity for students to sing popular and contemporary repertoire in a vocal ensemble. This group is open to singers from Years 7 12. All members of choirs are expected to practise repertoire regularly and will perform at significant school events and services throughout the year. Ensembles Chamber: A chamber ensemble consists of a small group of players with usually only one player on each part. Traditionally, such a group could fit into a small palace chamber or room, but today the music for chamber groups is wide and varied. At CGGS, we have a number of chamber groups and these will change from year to year. Examples may include (but are not restricted to) string quartets, flute ensemble, clarinet ensemble, brass ensemble and piano trios. Students who are members of such groups are expected to practise their repertoire regularly and be available for ensemble performances. 20 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

Clarinet Ensemble: This group provides experienced clarinettists the opportunity to study music especially arranged for the ensemble. This ensemble performs at a range of events throughout the year and all members are expected to also be involved in the concert band program. Instruments clarinet, bass clarinet. Flute Ensemble: This group provides experienced flautists the opportunity to study music especially arranged for the ensemble. This ensemble performs at a range of events throughout the year and all members are expected to also be involved in the concert band program. Instruments piccolo, flute, alto flute, bass flute. Brass Ensemble: This group provides experienced brass players the opportunity to study music especially arranged for the ensemble. This ensemble performs at a range of events throughout the year and all members are expected to also be involved in the concert band program. Instruments trumpet, trombone, tuba, horn and euphonium. Rock/Pop: A rock/pop ensemble is a group of two or more players. There are usually vocals, guitars, keyboards (piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer etc) and a rhythm section consisting of a bass guitar and drum kit. These groups may also include acoustic instruments that are amplified. Students who are members of such groups are expected to practise and develop repertoire and be available for performances. Instruments guitar (electric/acoustic), electric bass, drum kit, keyboard, voice Ensemble participants are expected to practise repertoire regularly and perform at scheduled events throughout the year. Terms and Conditions It is expected that all members of co-curricular music groups meet the following requirements: Enrolment/Prerequisites New students to the music program are required to submit an electronic enrolment form that can be found on page 30. Students enrolled in a co-curricular music group are required to have individual lessons. Students in the K.T Percussion Ensemble, Bella Voce Chapel Choir, Chorale and Coda Conduct are exempt. Participation in music co-curricular groups is a full academic year commitment. A non-committal two-week trial period at the commencement of joining a group is allowed, after which time a firm commitment is expected. Participation/Absence Procedures Attend all rehearsals, performance and workshops, as scheduled. This includes students in Years 11 and 12 who have rehearsals and performances scheduled after their academic classes and exams. Arrive at least five minutes before the start of rehearsals. For concert band and orchestra rehearsals, students must arrive 10 minutes prior to the start time. Bring music, instrument, music record book and pencil to every rehearsal. Practise their instrument regularly at home. Consult with the relevant group conductor and Dean of Music, should there be a clash with other co-curricular activities or family obligations. 22 CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017

Provide a written apology via email to the group conductor prior to absence from a rehearsal or performance. Families will receive a music performance calendar at the beginning of the year and are strongly encouraged to add all dates to the family calendar to avoid clashes of events. Levy Payment/Discontinuation Only in extenuating circumstances (and after consultation with the Dean of Music) can students discontinue group membership mid-year. Current students wishing to move into an auditioned choir and new students to the program are required to attend these auditions. Progression Through Groups Progression is subject to audition at the end of each year. On recommendation of the relevant instrumental tutor, conductor, Head of Strings, Bands, Choirs or Dean of Music, progression to the next band, orchestra or choir may be considered in the course of the year, under special circumstances. Co-Curricular Group Levy Levies supplement costs incurred in the running of the Co-curricular Music Program. These costs cover purchasing music and instruments, copyright fees, paying of specialist music tutors and conductors, entry into Eisteddfods and end of year functions. The levy does not cover costs such as transport and accommodation associated with tours. Co-curricular Music Group Levy Participation in the Co-curricular Music Program will attract a levy charge. The co-curricular music levy is subject to change and is published annually in the Scale of Fees. INSTRUMENT HIRE Canberra Girls Grammar School has a wide variety of instruments for hire to students during the first two years of their tuition. After the initial two years, students are encouraged to purchase their own instruments. CGGS Music Staff will be happy to offer advice about suitable instruments and suppliers. The following instruments are available for hire (subject to demand): Bassoon, clarinet, euphonium, flute, oboe, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, tuba, trumpet, cello, double bass, viola and percussion kit/packs. Drum kits, guitars, pianos and keyboards are NOT available for hire. Hire application and Terms and Conditions Hiring of instruments is organised through the office of the Music Administrator. When completing the online form for instrumental studies lessons, families wishing to hire an instrument must select this on the form, when prompted. Upon submission of this electronic form, parents/caregivers are agreeing to the below terms and conditions related to instrument hire. Parents/caregivers are responsible for loss or damage to an instrument during the period of the hire agreement. It is strongly recommended that the instrument be included in the household insurance policy. Instruments may be recalled if the proper care of the instrument is not taken. Priority for instrument hire is given to students involved in the Instrumental Studies Program at CGGS. If available, instruments may be hired to students learning privately, primarily to those involved in the Co-curricular Music Program at CGGS. While at school, instruments must be kept in the Music Centre instrument store room and not in classrooms or around lockers. Instrument Hire Levy The levy for Instrument Hire is $150 per semester and is included on the student s account each year. COMMUNICATION Music program opportunities and information regarding how to enrol is available on the CGGS Website and CANVAS. This information is available at all times and is renewed annually in Term 4 each year, for implementation in the following year. Information relating to the music program at Canberra Girls Grammar School is announced via email and at rehearsals. Information relating to co-curricular groups such as performances, expectations and uniform will be sent to group participants at the beginning of the year as well as the beginning of each term. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that they are aware of their relevant commitments. The current music performance calendar and rehearsal schedule can be accessed via CANVAS, which should be regularly checked for amendments/ updates. There are specific pathways for communication with the Music Department. All staff at Canberra Girls Grammar School may be contacted via email. The group generally meets four times each year to map out its activities, which change according to the needs of the Faculty. Recently, the group has run ice cream, gelato and music instrument stalls at the P&F Fete, catered for external music groups using the CGGS Hall conducted soirées in the Music Centre Recital Room and developed a page on the School website where families can advertise or purchase music instruments or bundles of music for sale (http://www.cggs.act.edu.au/community/friends-of-music/ musical-instruments-to-sell-or-buy/). Friends of Music has raised more than $25,000 over the past few years that has been used to purchase items such as performance attire and choir robes, a drum kit for the Recital Room, a beautiful piccolo as well as a 34-string Salvi lever harp. Support in the Junior School has taken the form of group tuition on some of the more unusual instruments (such as tuba and French horn) as a part of developing musicians for orchestral and band places in the Senior School. The Friends contribution has ranged from support for the Gabriel Singers participation in a major choral event in New York City in 2014 and in 2016, portable CGGS CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC 2017 29

PA equipment has been purchased for use at both Junior and Senior School events. FoM members are currently fund-raising for an additional grand piano for the Recital Room to allow students and teachers to play together and to extend the sophistication and ensemble dimension of piano repertoire in the School. The Friends also provide for a number of annual music awards for both Junior and Senior School years.
