I have never heard of this! Ho can it e--a great treasure in my kingdom, and I am unaare! 3 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 2 He called his gentleman-in-aiting 5 The Gentleman-in-Waiting Sequence tap on music stand ith pencil ~~~~ I read in these ooks that e have here a very onderful ird called a Nightingale They say it is the most onderful thing in my entire kingdom Why have you never told me anything aout it Imagine, that I only find out from reading a ook! The gentleman ansered, * I have not heard a sin-gle ord, ith-in the court a-out this ird 5A I ish to have it here this evening to sing for me, said the Emperor Imagine, the hole orld knos of this and I have never heard it! But here Where as he to look The gentleman ran throughout the palace, 9 5B n upstairs The gentleman said, I ill seek and find it, Sire, to sat-isfy your great desire * The Gentleman-in Waiting speaks in rhythm, ith the half note eats on the underlined ords The accompanying percussion should e in time to his eat It starts hen he starts and ends hen he stops Speeches ithout designated accompaniment still have strong rhythm; in these cases the percussion accompaniment is optional and don stairs

Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp asking all the courtiers, and ladies-in aiting: Can you give me infor-ma-tion re-gard-ing the lo-ca-tion of the fa-mous singing ird It's called the Nightingale, I've heard 5C 5 5 tap on music stand repeat as needed asking even the guards and arriors Can you give me in-formation No luck So he ran donstairs tap on music stand repeat as needed **asking the all the servants Can you give me infor-ma-tion re-gard-ing the lo-ca-tion of the fa-mous 2 tap on music stand repeat as needed Your Highness, I have made extensive inquiries and found that no one knos anything aout this ird or ho his singing goes I must advise you, therefore, that this Nightingale is not I fault the riter's pens for making up such silly rot Your Highness must take greater care to question hat you read Such ooks can end the finest minds toards foolishness, indeed Again no luck Finally he ran outside and inside, and upstairs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No So he ent ack to the Emperor 5 Fl Hp Fl Hp Ah! the Emperor cried, ut the latest ook came from the esteemed and poerful Emperor of apan! He is an honorale leader! His ords cannot e untrue! No go! Bring me this ird tonight or everyone in the hole court ill have their toes teaked after supper! The Gentleman said, Your Highness, I ill go right no, and find it (though I'm not sure ho!) So he ran everyhere again, and this time half the court ran ith him, as no one especially liked having their toes teaked They ran 5D 7 upstairs and outside and dostairs inside and finally! A little kitchen maid ho none of them thought ould kno anything aout anything so they never othered to even ask her--she kne aout the Nightingale! Oh, the Nightingale!' So eautiful! I have heard him sing so many times! When I go to see my poor sick mother ho lives y the shore, I stop in the oods to listen His song rings tears into my eyes Little Kitchen Maid, said the Gentleman-in-Waiting, Please lead us over hill and dale to see this famous Night-ingale Our Emp'ror ants to hear his songs; to-night the ird at court elongs If you assist this in-quisition, I'll el-evate your o position! Oh, of course! I ill e happy to ring you to see him, she said forards and ackards ** Same rhythm in this folloing segment as previous The speech is intended to cut off as indicated Fl Hp Fl Hp 70 So they all ent out and started alking (music starts), Gentleman-in-Waiting, courtiers, ladies in aiting, servants-most of the court, really---folloing the Kitchen Maid into the oods vamp until The Walk Underscore Sequence "into the oods" 77 7 Fl Hp Fl Hp Ho extraordinary, said the Court Chaplain It sounds like church ells! No, no, no! laughed the Kitchen Maid, Those are Frogs! But e are getting close Then they heard a ne sound: riit, croak, riit! They came to the sea, here the fishermen ere out in their oats, and the tall pine trees stood along the shore And then! The Nightingale egan to sing 7A The Nightingale in the Woods I 93 U There it is! said the Kitchen Maid She pointed to a small grey ird sitting up in the ranches U (lead audience riits) Play frog guiro ad li music vamps until end of "riits" U Fl Hp 3 As they ent along, suddenly a co started to moo out in the fields y the garden Moo, moo, moo! (lead audience moos) music vamps until end of "moos" They alked more Fl The Gentleman-in-Waiting exclaimed, That is it Ho plain it looks! That asn't mentioned in those ooks! Dear Little Nightingale, called out the Kitchen Maid, our great Emperor ishes for you to sing to him Of course, ith pleasure! ansered the ird 9 7B The Nightingale in the Woods II U U One of the young courtiers said, There it is! Ho amazing! What a great, poerful sound for such a small creature! No, no, no!' laughed the Kitchen Maid, Those are cos elloing Hp "I mean tonight at the palace," the maiden said "Certainly, " said the ird

9 10 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp So ack they all ent to the palace It as decorated specially for the occasion, ith right lights and eautiful floers 101 Festive Palace 10 112 All the court as gathered in the Emperor's reception room Right in front of the Emperor's throne as fixed a little golden rod, here the Nightingale could perch as he sang Everyone's gaze as turned toards the little, plain looking grey ird And he egan to sing n Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 9 Nightingale Sings for the Emperor U U 117 121 12 U It as so eautiful that tears streamed out of the Emperor's eyes, rolled don his cheeks, and dripped on his roe This is so onderful, said the Emperor You shall have one of my royal gold slippers to hang aout your neck as a reard! I am honored, Your Highness, said the ird, ut to see tears in your eyes is a rich reard and more than enough Well, everyone at court as so impressed ith the Nightingale! He ecame the darling of all the noles, as ell as the talk of the ton So no the Nightingale had to stay at court He as kept in a royal cage, and taken outside tice a day, and once at night And on these outings he as attended y telve servants, each one holding a rion hich as tied to his leg 7 U One day a package as rought to the Emperor as he as holding court On it as ritten the ord Nightingale 11 12 Fl This must e another ook aout our famous ird, said the Emperor But it as not a ook Inside there as a ox, and in that ox as a little mechanical ird, looking much like the real Nightingale, except that it as set ith diamonds, ruies, and sapphires There as a note tied to its eak, hich read, The Emperor of apan's nightingale is very poor compared to the Emperor of China's The Emperor ound up the ird Its little gold tail started to ag, it egan to sing a melody, one very much like one of the melodies that the real ird sang! 10 The Mechanical Bird 129 Fl Hp 11 n Hp Fl 133 Fl It didn't sound very ell---the real Nightingale alays did things ne each time, and the artificial ird could only repeat and repeat But the royal music master said, The ne Nightingale is doing everything perfectly, every time So all the courtiers said, Let's hear the ne Nightingale again-it's etter ithout the other one And so they ound it up and played it again 12A The Mechanical Bird Sequence 15 Hp Fl Hp 137 The Emperor as impressed Very good, he said The noles ere really impressed, especially at the eels hich flashed as the ird's tail agged Oh, ho lovely! Charming! Faulous! exclaimed all the courtiers And one of them said, The to irds must sing ith each other! Ho grand that ill e! "Yes, yes!" they all cried, "Let's hear a duet!" So the Nightingale as rought out from his cage, and the to irds had to sing together 11 The To Birds improvise freely ased on Nightingale melody Hp Fl Hp 19

Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 12B 153 They had the mechanical ird sing its song over dozens of times! They couldn't take their eyes off the ne ird, the ay its gems glittered and sparkled as it sang They ould have heard it even more, ut the Emperor finally said, Let's give the first Nightingale a turn no 159 and over and over They looked around Where as he While they had een usy atching the artificial ird, the real Nightingale had flon off! Back to its on green oods, ith no ties to its legs, and no cage! 13 Freedom 13 2 2 1 1 13 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 1 1 172 17 The courtiers ere in an uproar! What an ungrateful creature! Ho could it do such a thing!'' Imagine! To fly aay from the Emperor so rudely! Ho shocking! They all clucked their tongues and shook their heads Well, anyay, e have the est ird! they said And they ound up the ird again, and listened once more 1A The Mechanical Bird Again No the ne ird as the great sensation Most of the courtiers even preferred it to the real one, as it as so much prettier to look at Besides, It could sing and sing ithout getting tired, and it didn't need to e taken out or fed Even the music master said, Oh, this ird is much etter! With the other, you never kno hat you ill hear With this ird, you kno ust hat you ill get! Perfect every time! So the next eek the artificial Nightingale as presented to the pulic ith much ceremony Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl 1B Presentation cymals 10 Everyone said, Oh,' and Ah! "Ho eautiful it looks! What amazing eels!" -- and of course they applauded after its song But the little cooking maid and all the fishermen ho kne the real one ell said, It's quite nice, ut there is something missing, someho I can't say exactly hat 1 3 3 3 The Emperor announced that the real ird ould never e alloed ack in court-- it as anished from the kingdom 190 15 Banished U U 15 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl 1-19 - What! Can this e No more music! He picked up the ird, shook it and tapped it, ut the ird ouldn't sing Courtier! Send for my special physicians! rit One evening, the Emperor as lying in ed, listening to the mechanical ird sing Suddenly, he heard Whrr, hrr and the singing stopped! The courtier sent for the physicians, and they all rushed over right aay They looked at the ird, and shook it, and tapped it, ut they had no idea hat to do to get it to sing again Send for the royal atchmaker! they said So the royal atchmaker as sent for 1 Watchmaker 202 oodlock 20 continue ad li Hp Hp After much examining and poking and fussing, the royal atchmaker as ale to get the ird to sing again But Your Highness, must e very careful from no on, the atchmaker arned, to only play the music hen it is asolutely necessary, as the mechanism is quite orn out If the ird stops again, I do not think it ill ever e ale to start again So no the mechanical ird as only rought out to sing once a year Everyone felt this as a great loss!

17 1 Fl Time passed, many years And it happened that the Emperor ecame ill So ill, in fact, that everyone as sure he could not live So sure, in fact, that a ne Emperor had already een chosen They ere all sure the Emperor as very close to Death So close, in fact, most of the court thought he as already dead 17 Almost Dead 213 n Fl 22 Hp Fl 21 Drum Hp n Music! Sound the drums! the Emperor croaked out as loudly as he could I don't ant to hear all this! Music, I must have music! But no one heard him He turned to the artificial ird Sing, little ird, sing! Haven't I given you every honor Sing, I say! But there as no one there to ind it up, and the Emperor as too eak to do it himself So Death kept looking at the Emperor in the face, nodding to everything the hispers e saying All around it as terrily, shockingly quiet n Hp Fl Hp The Emperor lay pale and eak in his ig ed, not moving, his eyes closed The moon shone in through the indo The artificial ird sat on its fancy cushion eside him He could hardly reathe; he felt such a eight on him He opened his eyes a little, and hat did he see Why, Death as sitting right there on his chest, holding the Emperor's Golden Sord, and the Emperor's Imperial Banner, and the Emperor's Great Cron! And from amongst the folds of the velvet ed-curtains many little faces peered out, some lovely, some hideous, and all kinds in eteen These ere all the Emperor's deeds-the good, the not-so-good, and the ordinary---coming to remind him of ho he had lived Rememer this Rememer that they hispered to him 22 1 Terrified Underscore Sandlocks --slo ad li, continuously ith random changes of speed It as unearale--all the things they ere shoing him He as very frightened In fact, he as terrified! Fl Hp Fl Hp Suddenly! A urst of eautiful song! 232 19 The Nightingale and Death Sequence 235 U U The living Nightingale! It had heard that the Emperor as ill, and had come to help comfort him and ring him hope And as he sang, a miraculous thing happened The hispering voices gre fainter and fainter Finally they died aay completely Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 23 21 2 2 And then, an even greater miracle-- Death egan to listen! The Emperor's lood coursed through his veins ith ne energy, and the color egan to come ack into his cheeks Sing more, little ird, said Death "Only if you give ack the Emperor's Golden Sord," said the ird "It'd a deal!" said Death Only if you give me the Emperor's Imperial Banner, said the ird A orthy trade, a orthy trade, ansered Death So the ird sang again And hen the ird stopped, Death said, "Sing more!" Of course, of course, ust keep on singing! said Death And no that they had the treasures ack from Death, the ird kept on singing, ut a different song He sang aout quiet churchyards, the ells ringing in the steeples, and the roses over the graves U And hen he stopped, Death pleaded, Don't stop, don't stop! Only if you give me the Emperor's Great Cron, replied the ird 19 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 20 20 The Churchyard 251 3 3 3 25 2 U Thank you, thank you! said the Emperor You heavenly little ird! I treated you adly y anishing you! But no you have saved my life! Ho can I ever repay you You have already given me the greatest gift possile---the tears in your eyes hen you heard my song the first time These are like eels for a singer But no, rest I ill sing to help you regain your strength hile you sleep The Emperor slept And hen he aoke, he as refreshed and ell! The Nightingale still sat there, singing The Emperor got up out of ed and put on his imperial roes Dear Nightingale! You must stay here ith me alays! he said You can sing henever you like, and I ill reak the other ird into a thousand pieces! Death ecame so homesick for his on garden that he ent up and out the indo in a cold grey mist! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oh, no! Don't do that! cried the ird, That little ird did the est it could Keep it Your Highness, I cannot uild my nest here and live in the palace--i must live free! But I ill come in the evenings and sing to you I ill sing aout everything in your kingdom-the good, the ad, the sad, the happy, the seen, and the unseen Hoever, you must promise me one thing Anything! said the Emperor And he held his Golden Sord up over his heart Do not let anyone kno that you have a little ird ho tells you everything Our friendship needs to e private--aay from all the glamour of the court This ill e for the est Goodye for no!"
