Aminta would rather stay true to Elisa than rule a kingdom, and expresses his undying passion for her in this aria. I will love her, I will be constant. A faithful husband, a faithful lover, Only for her I will sigh. In so dear and sweet a creature I will find my joy, my delight, and my peace. Die Forelle/The Trout Christian Daniel Schubart 1739-1791 The Trout In a bright little brook with happy haste, a playful trout darted about like an arrow. I stood upon the bank and contentedly watched the merry fish bathe in the clear little brook. A fisherman with his rod stood on the bank, and looked on heartlessly as the fish swam about. So long as the clearness of the water is not disturbed, I thought, he would not be able to catch the trout with his fishing rod. But suddenly the thief grew tired of waiting. He slyly muddied up the brook, and before I realized it, his fishing rod was twitching, the fish was squirming there, and with raging blood I gazed at the betrayed fish.
Der Hirt auf dem Felsen/ Shepherd on the Rock Schubert Wilhelm Müller 1794-1827 When I stand on the highest cliff, Looking down into the deep valley, I sing. Far from the deep, dark valley floats up the echo from the ravines. The further that my voice reaches, the clearer its echo from below. My sweetheart dwells so far from me, I long with such passion for her there. I am consumed by deep sorrow, my joy has gone. My hope on earth has faded, I am so lonely here. In the wood my song echoes so full of yearning in the night; it lifts all hearts to heaven with its splendid power.
