1 This guide is intended to aid access to our facilities. The Hepworth Wakefield staff are trained in all aspects of visitor care and are here to help during your visit. Our Visitor Services team can offer information on artworks, the building and all the facilities. Please ask for their assistance. The Hepworth Wakefield is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Admission Admission to The Hepworth Wakefield is free. For events, concessionary rate tickets are available to disabled visitors and carers receive free admission. Access for People with Visual Impairment and Hard of Hearing We are currently developing verbal described guides which will be available in 2012. 2 The Hepworth Wakefield welcomes guide dogs and assistance dogs. We can provide water for your dog on request. Look out for audio described special events in our event programme. We are happy to provide BSL interpreters at our talks if required, please let us know in advance. There is a hearing loop at the Information Desk, auditorium and café. Access for People with Mobility Impairment The Hepworth Wakefield is fully accessible to wheelchair users, scooters and pushchairs and has accessible toilet facilities, designated parking for blue badge holders and lift and ramp access to all areas. Wheelchair Provision Wheelchair and scooter hire is available from Wakefield Shopmobility in the Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield City Centre. Please call in advance if using Wakefield Shopmobility for the first time, on 01924 787788 We have a small number of wheelchairs available for loan, to book a wheelchair for your visit please contact us in advance. Wheelchairs are subject to availability.
3 Accessible Parking The Hepworth Wakefield has five parking bays on site at the end of Gallery Walk for Blue Badge holders only. Access to these bays is via Tootal Street (WF1 5JN). There are an additional six bays on The Hepworth Wakefield car park on Thornes Lane (WF1 5QJ), the gallery is a short distance over the footbridge. Please refer to the map in the guide for car park and drop-off information. Seating There are a number of portable stools available for loan for use in the galleries in the first floor, please ask a member of staff for assistance. There is a small amount of bench-style seating available in the foyer and in some of our galleries. General Disability Access Information The lighting level throughout the building is bright with natural daylight in all spaces. The stairs to the first floor are clearly marked and are medium height. There are handrails on both sides and a landing between flights. Lifts There are two lifts available for public use, one is a standard lift and the other a goods lift available upon request. Lifts are located at the rear of the foyer by the stairway up to the first floor. The lifts have a visual floor indicator and an audio announcement. The external call buttons are at a low level should you need assistance. The lighting level in the lifts is bright. The lift has a graphic display and the lift buttons have raised G and 1 to indicate floors.
Public Toilets The main public toilets are on the ground floor to the right hand side of the Information Desk at the rear of the foyer. This area of public toilets includes standard toilets as well as fully accessible facilities and a baby change area. 4 Accessible Toilets There are 3 accessible toilets throughout the building. One located on the ground floor, one in Gallery 6 and another in the Learning Studios. The toilets on the ground floor are located down the corridor on the right hand side after the Information Desk, please refer to the map in this guide. All accessible toilets have a functional emergency alarm, coat hooks and wall mounted rails. Baby Change There is a baby change facility on the ground floor in the foyer and in the Learning Studios. Standard Toilets The standard toilets are at the rear of the foyer. There is level access and the lighting levels are standard. Hepworth Café Bar The Hepworth Café Bar is located on the ground floor and has level access from the foyer or via its own entrance from the café terrace at the end of the pedestrian bridge. From the foyer the Hepworth Café Bar is on the left hand side. It is accessed by double glass doors which operate manually, staff are available to assist. From outside the Café Bar can be accessed by an automatic door. The door is single width. The Café Bar terrace and surrounding entrance is level and paved with granite blocks. There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre and furniture is not fixed.
5 The menu is displayed behind the café counter and in paper form, is clearly written and presented and is available in large print. Please visit the website for current menu options. Shop The shop is located to the left of the main entrance and has level access. The door is a manually operated double door, staff are available to assist. There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre around the freestanding display units and items are displayed at low, medium and high levels. Some merchandise may be out of reach for wheelchair users, gallery staff members are on hand to help. Selected items for the gallery shop are available to purchase online at www.hepworthwakefield.org Event Spaces Events take place in our ground floor Auditorium and occasionally in the gallery spaces on the first floor. All spaces have level access from the foyer and are easily accessible by a wheelchair user. Gallery Spaces There are ten interlinked gallery spaces on the first floor. Bench-style fixed seating is available in some of the galleries. Portable folding stools are available on request, please ask a member of staff. There is an accessible toilet in Gallery 6, please refer to the map in this guide. All gallery spaces have level access and open double doors. We aim to provide large print gallery guides for all our displays. Please ask a member of staff for more details. Artworks have wall mounted labels next to each work in 16 point text along with introductory text panels in each gallery space in 58 point text size.
In addition, in each gallery we provide large print versions of each label for visitors to use in each space, please ask a member of staff. 6 Hepworth at Work Gallery This gallery presents objects, photographs and tools from Hepworth s studio in glass cabinets with drawers at 70cm high. Gallery staff are on hand to assist visitors using the drawers to view the artefacts. Large print version of the text panels are available. Hepworth Plasters Gallery This gallery has a large amount of sculpture displayed on large low level and high level plinths though extra care must be taken in these galleries as there are many angles to negotiate. Handling Collection A handling collection has been developed to support groups and individuals on their visit and to facilitate a tactile exploration of the collection displays. The handling collection will be available from the end of September 2011. The handling collection has been made possible with the support from the D Oyly Carte Charitable Trust. Talks, Tours and Workshops Artist-led verbally described tours and tactile workshops for people with additional needs are available. 9 Main Entrance and Information Desk The Information Desk is a short distance from the main entrance and is 106cm at full height. The lower level part of the desk is 74cm high to enable easy access for wheelchair users. Lighting levels are bright. Some bench-style seating is available in the foyer. Additional Information There are various exit routes out of the building in the event of an emergency. Exits are clearly marked with illuminated green running man signs. Gallery staff will assist in ensuring all visitors leave the building promptly and safely in the event of an emergency. Evacuation chairs are in place to aid evacuation to accessible visitors and the gallery staff are trained in their operation. Getting Here A comprehensive map of Wakefield city centre can be found on the tourist information website www.experiencewakefield.co.uk, T: 0845 601 8353 On Foot Approaching from Kirkgate train station The Hepworth Wakefield is located on the right hand side at the junction of Kirkgate and Thornes Lane and opposite the Chantry Chapel. By Bicycle Bicycle racks are located in The Hepworth Wakefield car park on Thornes Lane and on site at the disabled parking bays by our main entrance. Cyclists are requested to dismount before entering The Hepworth Wakefield grounds, cycling is not permitted on the pedestrian bridge.
By Train The gallery is 1 mile from Westgate train station (approximately 20 minutes walk) and 0.3 miles from Wakefield Kirkgate train station (approximately 8 minutes walk). Long distance services operated by East Coast Trains & Cross County Trains serve Wakefield Westgate Station, along with some local services. Wakefield Kirkgate station is served primarily by local services, along with some long distance services provided by Grand Central Trains. The nearest pay and display coach park can be found on Quebec Street (WF12 9SA) just 3 minutes drive from the gallery in Wakefield City Centre. By Bus Wakefield bus station is located on Union Street, Wakefield WF1 3AG. The gallery is situated on the main bus routes with services provided by all operators which stop on Bridge Street immediately adjacent to the gallery including 59, 96, 97, 102, 110, 194, 195, 196 and 485. Many bus services travelling from the Five Towns and South East Wakefield areas stop nearby on Doncaster Road, approximately 5 minute walk from the gallery including 125, 145, 148, 149, 150, 182,183, 184,185, 187, 188, 189, 223, 496 and PI. 11 FreeCityBus Wakefield s gallery is on the FreeCityBus route operated by Metro Monday Saturday between 9.30am and 3pm. The bus route includes Wakefield Westgate and Kirkgate train stations, Wakefield bus station, Ridings Shopping Centre, Trinity Walk and other city centre drop offs (every 10 minutes). The Hepworth Wakefield bus stop is adjacent to the Wakefield Waterfront on A61 Barnsley Road (see map) and the gallery is accessed via Tootal Street. All journeys on the bus are free of charge, each FreeCityBus is accessible and can accommodate one wheelchair user at a time. For more information about the FreeCityBus visit the Metro website, www.wymetro.com, T: 0113 245 7676 By car The Hepworth Wakefield has its own car park located on Thornes Lane, WF1 5QJ (please note there is a 2.5m height restriction). Access to the gallery from Thornes Lane is via a pedestrian bridge accessed via pedestrian crossing from the end of Thornes Lane. The gallery car park charge is 3.50 for up to four hours. During special events and school holidays our car park can be busy and we recommend the following alternative car parks: Merchant Gate Car Park, Mulberry Way, Wakefield, WF1 2QN The car park offers both long and short stay and is situated adjacent to Wakefield Westgate train station (5 minute walk) and is a multistorey car park with lift access to all floors. Parking charges apply, 13 for long stay per day (rail users) and 60p per hour up to a maximum of 5 hours. Rishworth Street, Wakefield, WF1 3BY Long stay multi-storey car park in the centre of Wakefield and has 12 accessible parking bays. Parking charges up to a maximum of 5 apply.
Directions Directions from the North: Exit the M1 at junction 41 and take the A650 towards Wakefield. Go through three roundabouts and continue onto the A61 sign posted Barnsley. Continue through two roundabouts, at the third set of traffic lights turn right towards A61 / Bridge Street and use the turning circle to turn right, at the next set of traffic lights turn left and then right into the gallery car park. 12 Directions from the South: Exit the M1 at junction 39 and take the A636 Denby Dale Road towards Wakefield. At the second roundabout turn right onto the A616 Asdale Road passing Asda on your left and continue on the A61 for about three miles. Pass the new waterfront development on your left take the take the left turn on to Thornes Lane immediately after crossing Chantry Bridge. By Air Leeds Bradford Airport is 20 miles from Wakefield and offers direct flights to international destinations. Please visit www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk for more information.
13 Arrival The Hepworth Wakefield site can be accessed by several routes. From Doncaster Road access is via Tootal Street or Gallery Walk off Doncaster Road. There are no steep gradients on either approach, please refer to the map for further information At the approach to the building there is ramp and step access to the main entrance. The main doors are glass and operate automatically and are double width, the door opening is 230cm wide. From Thornes Lane access via the pedestrian bridge over the river. The bridge has a 44 metre long ramp followed by a 50 metre long level footbridge across the river. The bridge is 3 metres wide. The walkway of the bridge is an open metal grille with 5mm gap between each grille. The bridge ends approximately 15m from The Hepworth s main entrance.
