What does EndNote X4 do? Creates a personal database for references (EndNote Library =.enl file) Inserts citations into word processing documents (CWYW) Provides a search interface to databases and resources (Online Search) Creates a stand-alonealone bibliography (reference list) Links between bibliographic citations and other files URLs, PDFs, image files 5 Sample.enl Library 6
Four methods to add references 1. Use EndNote s Online Search interface and connection files (e.g., Purdue catalog) 2. Use Direct Export function provided by other databases / vendors (e.g., TRD) 3. Save citations in.txt format; then use import filters to import records (e.g., SciFinder, Pubmed) 4. Manually type in a reference (see online tutorial) 7 1. Direct Connection Use EndNote s Online Search tool Works with library catalogs and other FREE databases (PubMed) Open EndNote Choose: Tools Online Search or Choose the resource you want to access from the list of connection files 8
Direct Connection Use the search dialog box to enter terms View results all are added to the library Choose individual citations to delete using CTRL-Left Click Choose References Move to Trash to discard citations you don t want to keep Close the search dialog box when finished with the list of citations 9 2. Technology Research Database) Select the citations you want to export Export citations into EndNote (Direct Export) Libraries EndNote site for specific instructions 10

Using EndNote s Import Filters When a database is not configured to connect tto EndNote (PubMed) Usually have to download citations as a text file Import text file into EndNote Use: File Import PubMed Mark citations of interest Send to: File Save in MEDLINE format When importing into EndNote, choose PubMed (NLM) filter 12
Cite While You Write (CWYW) Format Bibliography This is where you choose which Output Style you want your citations/bibliography to be. Can format citations: spacing, indents, font, etc. Output Style is specific to that document More Output Styles at Endnote.com/support
Find Citation(s) Displays a search box so you can search through the EndNote libraries that are currently open in EndNote. You can then select a citation from the search results to enter into your document. Searches throughout the whole citation; Cannot narrow to just author, title, etc. Insert Selected Citation(s) Or..select one or more citations in EndNote (can use shift and/or ctrl), then switch over to Word and select the Insert Selected Citation(s) button.
A word about macros Gray, shaded area = Macros with EndNote DO NOT EDIT this information using Word! How can you make changes? If there is a problem with the citation in the body of your paper or you want to modify the citation, use Edit Citation(s). If there is problem with information displayed in your bibliography, use Edit Library Reference(s).
Edit Citation(s) If you need to make changes in the citation in the way it appears in your paper, choose this option. Can remove author or date, can add information before or after the main citation, can add pages. Can select either the entry in the body of your paper or the entry in the bibliography. Edit Library Reference(s) If you need to make changes in the citation in your bibliography, choose this option. Opens the reference in your EndNote Library so you may view and/or edit the reference. Can only select the appropriate entry in the body of your paper, not in your bibliography.
Special Tools Remove Field Codes Export Traveling Library Remove Field Codes Removes macros from your document and changes them to plain text. (Creates a copy.) Can now edit, but no longer connected to EndNote if you want to change formatting, arrangement, add citations, etc. Appropriate for when submitting to a journal or sending document to someone without EndNote.
Export Traveling Library Will export all citations within the current document and create a new EndNote library that contains only those citations. Appropriate for sharing your citations with others who have EndNote or helping others fact check your document. EndNote Web
