ABSTRACT Estika Paramita Sani. 2013. The analysis of politeness strategies used by the characters in the film entitled Ted (A Pragmatics Approach). Thesis: English Department Program. Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University. This research is focused on the politeness strategies used by the characters in the film entitled Ted. This research was conducted to find out the type of politeness strategies used in the conversation, to know how the politeness strategies are employed by the characters and to find out the reason that influence the choice of politeness strategies. This research is a pragmatic study. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative method which uses total sampling technique. All of the conversations containing politeness strategies in the speech act were taken as the data. The results of the analysis are as follows: first, there are four types of politeness strategies used by the characters in the film entitled Ted. The strategies are Bald on record strategy, Positive politeness strategy, and Negative politeness strategy and off record strategy. Second, Politeness strategies are employed by the characters in three forms: Imperative, Declarative and Interrogative. In Bald on record, all the data use Imperative form. In positive politeness, 50% of the data use declarative form and the other 50% use Interrogative. In negative politeness, 90% of the data use declarative form, only 10% use Interrogative. In off record, 100% of the data use declarative form. Third, there are many factors that become the reason why the characters choose certain politeness strategies. The reasons are: the context of situation in which the conversation happens, the relationship between the participants, the unequal power/status between the participants and the degrees of the imposition that might damage the hearer s face. Based on the conclusion above, the researcher hopes that this research will give a contribution for the students in studying politeness strategies. There are still many cases on the study of politeness strategy. This field can still be learnt from different point of view. It is suggested for the other researcher to conduct a research about politeness strategy with different point of view and different source of data. xii
