ROGRAM NOTES Italian comosers o the Baroque era rote many orks eaturing the trumet. The eagerness o these musicians to rite or the trumet as all the more remarkable in vie o the act that the instrument they kne as technically rimitive in comarison to its resent-day descendant. The mechanism o valves and ush buttons, hich ermits the ull range o chromatic notes throughout the comass o the modern trumet, as not invented until ell into the nineteenth century. The Concerto in C Maor or To Trumets, RV 57 rovides the listener ith a onderul examle o Baroque style clarion trumet riting and erormance. Clarino is a virtuoso method o trumet laying, racticed by trumeters trained in the art o roducing the highest harmonics, i.e., rom the third octave uard, here they orm a continuous scale. Through this taxing method, trumeters o the Baroque eriod erormed the brilliant arts or their instrument that e ind not only in Italian concertos, but also in Handel s oratorios, Bach s cantatas, and similar orks o the eriod. In today's current erormance ractices, these orks are commonly erormed on iccolo trumet. Antonio Vivaldi is recognized as one o the masters o the instrumental concerto as it evolved rom the earlier concerto grosso orm. With some 500 concertos to his credit, one can see by sheer number his assion or the genre, hich he reined into an overall orm o three movements in ast-slo-ast succession. In the resent concerto, the comoser reduces the central Largo movement to only a six-measure assage during hich the trumets are silent. The to outer Allegro movements ollo a attern ith a strong recurring theme, knon technically as a ritornello subect. This subect is sounded at the outset by the trumets and orchestra ith the latter hal o the theme assigned chiely to the ensemble. Vivaldi then uxtaoses varied restatements o the ritornello ith more reely invented eisodes or the soloists, the to trumets alternately chasing each other in imitative counteroint or laying together in close harmony. As ith most o Vivaldi s concertos, e cannot say hen or or hat urose it as ritten, though its bright character allos us to imagine some estive occasion. This small ensemble accomaniment as crated to imitate the baroque ceremonial ind band, and as commissioned to serve as an encore or Charles Geyer and Barbara Butler (trumet soloists) on the Eastman Wind Ensemble s tour o aan in 996. The ranz oseh Haydn Trumet Concerto in E-lat Maor (set or enhanced classical harmoniemusic ensemble - DH990) as art o the same concert rogram. Note that the solo trumet arts in this edition are ithout articulation marks. This is due in art to the style o articulation on the early trumets being so dierent than anything e use today. The current intent is or the ensemble to articulate (adding or subtracting slurs as necessary) in a ashion that agrees ith the soloists. Robert W. Rumbelo Legal se Requires urchase
