QUALIFICATION PROFILE FOR THE MASTER PROGRAMME HARPSICHORD General information In today s professional environment, which sets enormously high standards and demands maximum flexibility in equal measure, the main focus of the Master programme Harpsichord is to convey the musical interpretive skills and technical abilities that are needed for a successful musical career. The Master Programme Harpsichord (Major in Harpsichord) is designed for students who wish to concentrate more on expanding their solo repertoire. The Master Programme Harpsichord (Major in Basso Continuo) enables students to focus on the area of the basso continuo in keeping with the current state of research and international standards. Through their choice of modules, students can focus on further areas of specialisation, such as improvisation, chamber music, piano accompaniment, musicology or editorial techniques. ENTRANCE EXAM The admission examination serves to demonstrate a candidate s artistic aptitude for the Master programme Harpsichord, as well as to ascertain their previous instrumental and musical knowledge and skills relating to the piano. In the admission examination, the Examination Committee assesses a candidate s technical skills, musical talent and capacity for expression and creative arrangement, based on which a career as a professional harpsichordist can be realistically expected. Permission to the master programme Harpsichord is the completion of a professionally qualifying bachelor programme for Harpsichord or an equivalent study 1 at a recognized Austrian or foreign postsecondary educational institution and the successful completion of the entrance examination for the master programme ahead. The candidate has to announce the choice ot the Major/Minor in Harpsichord and Basso Continuo. The entrance exam subdivides into following parts: Recital of a representative program in the length of 45 minutes that contains works of various style on the harpsichord: a) One work of the 16 th or 17 th century b) One bigger work of J.S. Bach f.e. one toccata, one suite or two preludes and fugues out of the WTC c) One work from the 18 th century (not J.S. Bach) f.e. D. Scarlatti, F. Couperin, C.Ph.E. Bach Aspired Major harpsichord: One chamber music work with basso continuo Sight reading may be asked Aspired Major basso continuo: At least two chamber music works with basso continuo One sight reading task in the field basso continuo The candidat chooses one work out of the program, that will be played at first and completely. Admission candidates must organise their chamber music partners themselves. The Joseph Haydn Department of Chamber Music, Early Music and Contemporary Music offers help in finding chamber music partners, although it can offer no guarantees. Interview with the examination board. This concerted interview will concern of specific themes, about the motivation chosing the Major and Minor, entering this career and to individual targets 1 Equivalent programmes are f.ex. PROOF OF PROFICIENCY IN GERMAN Candidates, whose first language is not German must provide evidence of proficiency in German in conjunction with the entrance examination, as far as this is necessary for the successful progress of their studies. This evidence should preferably take the form of a school-leaving certificate based on classes taught in German. Should the candidate be unable to provide evidence of proficiency in German, the Rector s office must require them to take and pass a supplementary examination in German at Level B1 2, before admission to their second semester. Following certificates are accepted: B1-Certificate from an ÖSD examination centre ( ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) ) or a Goethe Institute examination centre ( Goethe-Zertifikat B1 ) TEACHERS OF THE MAIN ARTISTIC SUBJECT (alphabetical order) GLÜXAM Wolfgang TRAXLER Erich VAN LOOKEREN CAMPAGNE Augusta 2 Candidates need not take the supplementary examination if they present evidence of having passed an examination at the stipulated level at an international examination centre for the German language (e.g. Goethe Institute, ÖSD). Information on precisely what certificates candidates must submit for this purpose can be found in the relevant guideline on evidence of adequate proficiency in German at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, issued by the Rector s office. This examination is designed for students who have not had the opportunity to sit for the German proficiency certificate. It should be noted that a level equivalent to B1 will be required. The test does not form part of the entrance examination, and attendance is not compulsory. 3
DURATION AND ORGANISATION OF STUDY PROGRAMME The study programme covers 4 semesters with 27 semester hours (without modules and electives) and 120 ECTS-credit points. MASTER THESIS In the master programme, an artistic Master Thesis must be submitted. Students are entitled to submit a Scientific Thesis instead of the Master Thesis. While the main emphasis is laid on the artistic part, the artistic master thesis also includes a written thesis. This written thesis must elucidate the artistic part. The artistic Master Thesis may have different forms: Public performance of a piece of music or a group of works (at least 20 minutes) A documentation of a performance on a recording medium If a student chooses to write a scientific Master Thesis, it is compulsory for them to attend the Seminar for Master Students instead of the Workshop for Master Students. MASTER EXAMINATION The Master Examination serves to provide evidence of having attained artistic maturity. The precondition for being able to take the Master Examination is the successful completion of all the compulsory subjects, of the elective subjects and both of the areas of specification, as well as the attainment of a positive mark for the Master Thesis. The Master Examination comprises two parts: Part 1: Performance in front of the examination committee. Part 2: Performance in form of a Concert Both parts are to proof the artistic and technical accomplishment of the repertoire of different styles as well as to perform on podium mature. ACADEMIC DEGREE After successful completion of all compulsory and optional subjects, the positive rating of the Master Thesis, and passing the master examination taken in front of a committee, the programme of study is completed with the awarding of the degree of Master of Arts (MA). TUITION FEES For Austrian students and students who have the same status as Austrian students (citizens of EU and EEA Member States, as well as Switzerland), if their studies exceed the duration of a study phase plus 2 tolerance semesters: 363,36 per semester. For all other students including those who are stateless and those whose citizenship is undetermined: 726,72 per semester Information on possible grounds for a waiver or refund of tuition fees is available from the Department of Studies and Academic Services. In addition, the following fee is to be paid by all students once per semester: Mandatory membership of the Austrian National Union of Students ( ÖH-Beitrag ), currently amounting to 19,70 per semester. The Austrian National Union of Students fee is the same for both Austrians and non-austrians. 7
