Pertillar Welcome! Here are a few caveats to consider: All students enrolled in the Honors English 10 course must complete the summer assignments. Students who choose not to complete one or more of the summer assignments are strongly encouraged to drop the course before the add/drop deadline. The work you submit must be your own. Plagiarized material will be not accepted. Any plagiarism, even of only a line or two, will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. You may not submit work you have already submitted for another course. Doing so is a violation of the honor code and will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. Without prior approval, late summer work will not be accepted. Work not received on Turnitin.com by deadline will be assigned a grade of zero. Students will receive a grade of zero for each part of the assignment that is not completed. The zeroes will be entered in the grade book during the first quarter of the first term of the course. Deadlines will be adjusted for students who enroll in the course after June 17 th. Please send me an e-mail the day you are enrolled, so I can adjust your deadlines accordingly. Students are encouraged not to enroll in the course after the school year has already begun since the work load may prove too great.

Page 2 Part 1: Personal Narrative Conformist vs. Non-conformist Deadline: June 31st, by 10:00 PM to Turnitin.com Immediately e-mail or text me with any issues you are having. This year we will take a look at varied texts for a few themes, but we will begin with the concept of conformity vs. nonconformity. In order to further explore this topic when you return to school, you will prepare by choosing one of the articles from Psychology Today, reading it, and then writing a 3-paragraph personal narrative (with a Work Cited page) on the following: 1. Do you identify as a conformist, non-conformist, or a variation of the two? Explain. 2. Owning your personal label, reflect one article (1/20) from Psychology Today, and describe whether or not you agree with the author or not. Be sure to identify the title and author of the article, including its main ideas. Explain your prerogative. 3. Include your opinions on people who have opposite attitudes than you, providing examples of what you admire and/or disapprove of and why. These people can be historical, famous, modern, local, etc. Resources: Psychology Today articles are found at https://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/conformity Rubric for Personal Narrative - pg. 3 of this packet Narrative Essay suggestions: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/04/ MLA formatting sample paper: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/13/ Turnitin.com information: o For more information on Turnitin.com and manuscript form, see pages 11-12.

Page 3 Rubric for Personal Narrative (Part 1) A+ A A- B+ B B- Exemplary Advanced Your 5-paragraph essay fulfills the purpose of a personal narrative on conformity v. nonconformity. It includes a thesis statement that clearly expresses your opinion based on evidence. You have examined your ideas in comparison to those expressed by the author in Psychology Today. You demonstrate the ability question your personal biases, stereotypes, misconceptions, and/or presumptions, and you explore new modes of thinking as a result. You consider how your understanding of concepts has changed over time or has remained the same, exploring the reasoning behind it. The narrative is insightful, error-free, and adheres to MLA formatting rules. Your composition may fulfill the purpose of a personal narrative; however, it needs improvement in one or two minor respects. See criteria in the Exemplary category. C+ C C- Satisfactory Your composition may fulfill the purpose of a personal narrative; however, it needs improvement in three or more respects. See criteria in the Exemplary category. D+ D D- Emerging Your composition fulfills the purpose of a personal narrative in one or two respects; however, generally your piece does not achieve the aims of a reflection. See criteria in the Exemplary category. F Unacceptable Your composition does not in any way achieve the aims of a personal narrative. See criteria in the Exemplary category. A= 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69 % F = 0-59%

Page 4 Part 2: Reading for Character Non-Conformity Are they or aren t they? How do you know? As you read about the characters listed below, consider what you currently believe about non-conformity and whether or not these characters fit the bill. You will be expected to verbally share examples from their lives to show whether or not they are non-conformists in addition to reflecting on the author s intent. What is the author trying to say about being non-conformist- or conformist? When you return to school, we will hold a Socratic seminar, or an organized class discussion, on the fifth day of class. Your personal notes may be used and submitted for extra credit quiz grades. Your insightful participation in the seminar will be worth a test grade. On the third day of class, you will have a character identification and plot-driven multiple choice test. Questions to consider, answer, and be ready to discuss: 1. Is the character conformist or non-conformist or a combination of both? What is their opinion about life? 2. What evidence do you have to prove it? 3. Would the moral lesson of the story be altered if the main character(s) was/were no longer conformist or non-conformist? 4. What is the author trying to say about being a non-conformist? Is it good, bad, or sometimes both? How and why? Ex.: Mrs. Hornung is a conformist because she gave students a summer assignment because they are in an advanced weighted class and it s been deemed appropriate by her superiors. Because she believes in the following the rules, her students can expect to be held accountable for their decisions and work. If she was a nonconformist, her students might not know what to expect from her or her grading methods or even which side of her personality they were going to encounter on daily basis. Therefore, her students can conclude that while it may be exciting to have a nonconformist as a teacher, it is decidedly better and easier to have a predictable and transparent person leading a classroom. The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield Jane Gallagher Phoebe Caulfield D. B. Caulfield Sally Hayes Mr. Spencer Robert Ackley Stradleter

Page 5 Part 3: Poetry Connection In a 3-paragraph analysis (not summary), compare Nonconformist to The Catcher in the Rye. Rubric for analysis paper is on pages 6-8 of this packet. 1. How do the speakers compare in tone, attitude, and view point? Provide specific examples (quoted details). 2. How do the speakers compare as non-conformists? Is one more intense than the other? Are they really nonconformists? How do you know? Provide examples. 3. Is either speaker more relatable, why? Provide examples. Nonconformist - Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar Of course I've been driven to madness. Haven't you? It's chic. It's so 'with it' today, To express some form of insanity. Butt cracks are being exposed. Breasts implants are nearly being sold, At fast food chains. The police are smoking more weed, Than I've ever done in the '70's. And corruption? Children are selling electronic devices... In elementary schools! Yes. And at good prices too I might add! I passed an elementary school the other day, And this kid, no more than twelve years old... Was using two cell phones! Two! And I can not afford one! Of course I've been driven to madness. Haven't you? People crying on TV 'after' being caught Killing children and spouses. The news being interrupted by commercials, Pitching everything from condoms, underwear... And sexual enhancements! Age defying creams and weight reducers. And divorced lawyers pitching their services... As if they were selling used cars. And... I guess, In a way they are! Of course I've been driven to madness. Haven't you? It's chic. It's so 'with it' today, To express some form of insanity. However... When I get home, I take off that mask. Get a cool glass of tea! Sit back... And enjoy my peace of mind! 'THAT' I am going to protect. If I have to be in disguise outside to keep it! I don't want anyone to think, I am a nonconformist!

Page 8 You must follow the rules of manuscript form for every typed assignment you submit throughout the course. Follow the step-by-step instructions below. 1. Open a Word document. 2. Select Times New Roman, 12-point as your font. 3. Set one-inch margins on all sides of the text. Your document should already do this for you as by default. You can check under the Page Layout tab and Margins. 4. Under the Home tab and Paragraph, click the button that aligns all text with the left margin. 5. Insert a running header that will appear on every page with the correct page number: On the tool bar above your document, click on the Insert tab. Go to the Header & Footer section. Select Page Number. Choose the Top of the Page drop down menu. Then select Plain Number 3. Your page numbers will be inserted at the top right hand corner of your pages. Under the Design tab, click Different First Page to remove the page number from the first page of your document. Click into a page number and change its font to match the rest of the essay. At this time you should also type your last name as you see below. When writing about literature, you will identify the exact source of your textual evidence in two ways. First, you will include in-text citations that indicate the precise location of the evidence within the text. Second, you will attach a Works Cited page to your paper that provides the bibliographic information for the text you have discussed. In-Text Citations The following is an excerpt from an essay analyzing Susan Glaspell s A Jury of Her Peers. Note the way the writer incorporates quotations from the text into her analysis. Also note the format of the in-text citation. When drawing from only one source, you only need to include the page number. Identifying the author is not necessary. Although Mrs. Peters s growing empathy for Minnie stems largely from her observations, it is also prompted by her negative reaction to the patronizing comments of the male investigators. At several points in the story, her body language reveals her feelings. For example, when Mr. Hale remarks that women are used to worrying over trifles, both women move

Page 9 closer together and remain silent. When the county attorney asks, for all their worries, what would we do without the ladies? the women do not speak, nor do they unbend (199). The fact that the women respond in exactly the same way reveals the extent to which they are bonding. The Works Cited Page The following is a sample Works Cited page from the same essay. Notice that the in-text citation in the paragraph links to the source listed below. Works Cited Glaspell, Susan. A Jury of Her Peers. Literature and Its Writers: A Compact Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. Ed. Ann Charters and Samuel Charters. 3rd ed. Boston: Bedford, 2004.194-210. Print. Modern Language Association (MLA) has provided a set of guidelines to assist you. Please go online to the OWL at Purdue University Writing Center and access the links under MLA Format: Electronic Sources. One important item to note is that the URL is no longer necessary in citations. On websites, most titles appear above the informational text. Note all sites will have authors, and that is okay. Do your best to make sure the author is not included. Publishers (those who finance the site) usually appear in one of the top corners of the site or all the way at the bottom, near what is probably the copyright. In place of a missing date (i.e. 7 Aug. 2015), use the copyright. I recommend that you read the information on the OWL website and create your Works Cited page before you write the essays. Remember: You must follow the rules of MLA Format for all summer assignments.

Page 10 Last Name 2 6. At top left corner of the first page, type the following header: Your first and last name Mrs. Hornung Honors English 10 Date (day month year- 7 August 2017) 7. After the date, continue to the next line and type the title. Your title should reflect the central idea of your essay. Do not entitle your essay Summer Assignment. Capitalize the first letter of the title and all other important words within the title. For example, do not capitalize articles or prepositions unless they are the first word of the title. Center the title using the center button on the Paragraph toolbar. DO NOT underline, italicize, or enclose the title in quotation marks. DO NOT make your title bigger and bolder than the text. DO NOT type the title in a different font than you used for the text. DO NOT add extra line spaces before or after the title. Just continue to the next line and begin typing your essay. 8. Indent the first line for each paragraph five spaces. One press of the tab button should do this. The default for the tab button is five spaces. 9. Double-space ALL text. Do not put extra spaces between paragraphs or before or after your title. Under the Paragraph tab, choose Select Line Spacing Options Set the rules as you see below
