Learning Bank: Handel and Water Music George Frideric Handel (685 759) was born in the town o Halle Germany. Although he exressed an early interest in music he was strongly discouraged by his ather. To avoid the disaointment and anger o his arents he had to ractice the clavichord (an early keyboard instrument) in secret. Desite his early challenges however Handel soon realized that he wanted to be a comoser and he let his hometown to ursue his dream. Ater living in many German and Italian cities and soaking u the musical cultures o his dierent homes he inally settled in England in 70. For the rest o his lie he would live and work in London and although he was German he was considered by many to be the best English comoser o his day. Handel s musical style was deely inluenced by all the time he sent living in dierent countries and listening to their native styles and traditions. He was truly an international comoser: his harmonies were German his strong melodies Italian and many o his orms and rhythms were French. Handel was a master at combining all o the dominant musical trends o his day into a style that was uniquely his own. He was also a very roductive comoser: over the course o his career Handel wrote thousands o ieces including over 70 oeras and oratorios. An oera is a musical drama or orchestra and singers tyically based on mythological themes; oratorios are similar although they are usually based on religious themes. Today he is known rimarily or his Music or the Royal Fireworks (748) and the amous Messiah oratorio (74) with its assionate and joyul Hallelujah chorus. Water Music is a series o orchestral movements oten organized into three suites (collections o dances).
