UIW Marching Cardinals Drum Major Audition Information Sheet Initial Requirements Successfully completed one (1) year of membership in the Marching Cardinals. Must have a 2.5 Overall GPA by the end of the Fall 2017 semester. Must be currently enrolled at the University of the Incarnate Word completing coursework towards a degree. Must be available in July or early-august 2017 for preparations for Summer Band Camp. Prior leadership experience at the high school or collegiate level is preferred, but not required. Benefits Opportunity to serve the university and students as the Drum Major of the Marching Cardinals $2000 tuition credit divided into two installments (Fall/Spring) Travel expenses paid to the Smith Walbridge Drum Major Camp in Illinois Leadership service that can be included on future résumés Position Description The Drum Major of the Marching Cardinals is the public face of the Pride of the University of the Incarnate Word and should possess several different qualities. For clarity, the directors desire the drum major should be a/an: o High-Quality Individual The drum major should be committed to the university mission of service, citizenship, kindness to others, and dedicated to the members of the Marching Cardinals. o Capable Teacher The drum major should be knowledgeable in basic teaching concepts regarding marching fundamentals and music rehearsal. In addition, they should be able to break down concepts
to the most basic levels to help inexperienced members achieve success. o High-Quality Musician The drum major should be proficient on their instrument; possess the ability to hold a steady pulse; be able to conduct in 2, 3, or 4 patterns; and exude confidence and musicality from the podium. o Valuable Rehearsal Assistant The drum major should be able to facilitate rehearsal for the directors by operating the metronome when instructed; maintain decorum within the rehearsal setting and motivate the band to rehearse in the proper manner when necessary; possess unwavering public support for the directors when interacting with the members of the band. o Articulate Public Speaker The drum major should be able to speak at public functions; serve as the representative of the band at civic duties; correspond with the band on behalf of the directors when needed. o Healthy Individual The drum major should be able to perform the marching fundamentals at an exceptionally high level; high-step and back bend during pre-game festivities; and be able to conduct for long periods of time without fatigue. Audition Procedure 1. Complete the audition application. 2. Applications and essays should be submitted electronically or in person by November 10, 2017. 3. Complete the audition process as outlined in the Drum Major Materials document. 4. If a finalist, conduct a UIW ensemble in a live audition on a selection of the director s choice. Conducting For your audition, please prepare the following conducting patterns and perform them in this order: 1. Conduct 4 measures of 4/4 time at q = 120, 144, and 152, pausing in between each tempo change 2. Conduct 4 measures of 3/4 time at q = 88 3. Conduct 4 measures of 2/4 time at q = 60 Marching TWO PARTS 1. Maneuvers - For your audition, please march the following drill (all 8-to-5 step size), keeping upper-body perpendicular to the front sideline during all slides: Figure-8 Box Drill 1. Band Horns Up 2. Mark Time 8 3. Forward March 8 4. Slide Right 8 5. Backward March 8 6. Slide Left 8 7. Mark Time 8 8. Forward March 8 9. Slide Left 8 10. Backward March 8 11. Slide Right 8 12. Commands - For your audition, please administer the following commands: Attention Drill the Position of Attention Band Horns Up Band Horns Down Mark Time Mark Forward March Backward March Teaching Bring in a colleague (or friend) and be prepared to teach a 5- to 10-minute lesson on one of the following marching skills to your peer. The panel will select the topic at the audition. Forward March Traverse/slide technique Mark Time Backward March Position of Attention Interview The audition panel will ask you a series of questions based on information from your application essay. Please be able to discuss topics pertaining to leadership, the role of the drum major in a university band, and ways to interact positively with fellow band members.

Ability to diagnose challenges and provide feedback INTERVIEW - (50 pts) 40 The auditioning person should communicate the following: 1. Ability to think on his/her feet 2. To serve the University of the Incarnate Word as its primary spirit organization and a source of pride for faculty, students, and alumni. 3. To perform music and drill that is both relevant and entertaining to the UIW community while also reflecting the musical tastes of the faculty, student body and alumni. 4. To function as a musical/social/emotional outlet that compliments the academic pursuits of all members during their time at the University of the Incarnate Word. 5. To serve instrumental music education students within the UIW Department of Music as a way to learn and synthesize techniques in marching band pedagogy and design. We will succeed in this mission through effective planning, hard work, and treating each other with respect at all times.
