Since 2010 PRACE = the European HPC Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) Access to leading edge resources Providing 15 Pflop/s to the European Scientific Community through a pan-european peer review process Various and complementary architectures hosted by 6 centers For industry and academia Access to top-level services over 5 years (2010 2015) - 4 Hosting members funding 400 M (100M each) - 130 M from the partners including 70 M from the EC via implementation projects (IPs) Training: PATC, «PRACE Advanced Training Centers» Code-enabling Relations with users PRACE user forum Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC) 3 3
PRACE s Achievements in 4 years In 2014, >15 PFlop/s provided MareNostrum: IBM BSC Barcelona, Spain CURIE: Bull Bullx GENCI/CEA Bruyères-le-Châtel, France Mathematics and Computer Sciences 4% Universe Sciences 23% Fundamental Physics 22% Chemical Sciences and Materials 24% Engineerin g & Energy 16% Earth System Sciences 11% JUQUEEN: IBM BlueGene/Q GAUSS/FZJ (Forschungszentrum) Jülich, Germany SuperMUC: IBM GAUSS/LRZ (Leibniz- Rechenzentrum) Garching, Germany HERMIT: Cray GAUSS/HLRS (High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart) Stuttgart, Germany FERMI: IBM BlueGene/Q CINECA Bologna, Italy 4
PRACE serves academic and industrial competitiveness Earth System Sciences 88 million core hrs on Marenostrum (ES) for ES The project aims at developing new climate models for preparing the 6th IPCC campaign in relation with ENES. Astrophysics Materials Chemistry Seismology Life Science million core hrs: 98 on CURIE (FR) + 49 on SuperMUC (DE) for Germany The objective is to understand the explosion of massive stars into supernovae and understand the origin of the heaviest of the chemical elements, such as gold, platinum, lead, and uranium. 10 million core hours on CURIE( FR) for Finland The goal of this project was to study using DFT simulations the effects of irradiation on Graphene nanostructures, especially vacancies and their coalescence into holes/defects. 59,8 million core hrs on JUQUEEN (DE) for Switzerland The goal is to catch CO 2 in a solvent before it is released into the air, making the exhausts from e.g. power plants significantly cleaner and then to reduce the cost of regenerating the solvent by optimizing the regeneration process. 53.4 million core hrs on SuperMUC (DE) for Italy The massive allocation of computing resources awarded via PRACE can be used to explore the nonlinearity involved in the dependence of local ground shaking on geological structure. 56 million core hours on CURIE (FR) and 82 million core hours on SuperMuc for FR The project aims at understanding how a nervous impulse is transported with neurons, and especially the function of the ion channels, to contribute to the design of drugs that will modulate their activity. This allocation is 30 times larger than a typical allocation. 5
Links with industry PRACE Industrial Advisory Committee High level representatives of top industrial users (Airbus, EDF, ENI, Daimler, NAFEMS ) Gathers strategic expectations of industries Advises PRACE on the directions that best suit industrial needs Specific initiatives Links with industrial providers through the European Technology Platform for HPC Initiative towards SMEs : SHAPE (SME HPC Access Programme in Europe) Examples : EDF Energy (UK) 20.8 Mh on Hermit (HLRS, Germany) 6th call PRACE (March 13 to March 14) Objective: by LES methods, modeling flow in a rotor of type «Magnus» or Turbosail alternative-concept for diesel engines More ecological marine propellers A. Revel (Univ Manchester) RENAULT (France) 42Mh on CURIE (TGCC, France) 6th call PRACE (March 13 à March 14) Objective: Improve the safety of vehicles by leveraging the simulation parameters of crashes Unattainable ambition with internal resources of Renault Anticipate new security regulation (EuroNCAP6 in 2015) M. Pariente, Y. Tourbier (Renault) 6
