Quick guide to e-books Your OpenAthens account gives you access to several e-book collections, providing you with thousands of e-books. Some of the e-books are available to download, others must be used online. How to access Go to http://www.openathens.net, click Login to MyAthens and log into your Homerton OpenAthens account Choose one of the e-book collections: o Clinical Key o EBook Library (EBL) o ebrary o MyiLibrary o Ovid Online o Springer Clinical Key Clinical Key provides access to 1189 e-books published by Elsevier, covering all aspects of clinical medicine. From the Clinical Key homepage, click Books on the top bar: You can select books by title, or by specialty: Click on a title to open the book. The books can be read online, or chapters can be downloaded as pdf documents and saved on your computer.
EBook Library (EBL) The EBL platform provides access to over 30,000 e-books on all topics. All can be browsed online for 5 minutes. We have recently purchased 300 EBL e-books, covering leadership, nursing, midwifery, therapies and clinical medicine. They can be read online or downloaded for 1-7 days. From the homepage, you can use the search box or click View Full Catalogue to see all the e- books. On the next screen click limit search to see the e-books purchased by Homerton. Click Read this book to read online. All the EBL books are available for you to download. Once you have read a book online for 10 minutes you will be prompted to borrow it. You can borrow a book for 24 hours and continue reading online or download it for 1-7 days. NB: To download and borrow an EBL book, you will need Adobe Digital Editions on your PC, laptop, or other device. If you are using a tablet or smart phone you will also need Blue Fire Reader. These are both free to download.
ebrary ebrary gives you access to a number of e-books on Medical Education, which form part of a new Virtual Faculty Collection provided by London Health Libraries. However, until the end of June 2014, you can access the entire ebrary collection, over 28,000 e-books on all topics. Use the Search box on the homepage to look for books. To read a book, click the title. You can also download these books: either download a pdf of a chapter or the whole book (for 14 days). Adobe Digital Editions is required see above under EBL). MyiLibrary MyiLibrary provides access to a collection of e-books purchased nationally for NHS staff. There are also many Homerton-purchased titles, and other e-books and documents published by inter-governmental organisations such as the World Health Organisation. You have access to over 1500 titles. Subject areas covered include nursing, midwifery, internal medicine, paediatrics, surgery and pharmacology. Use the Search box on the homepage to look for books.
When you see a book you want to read, click on Open Now to access. You can print or download up to 10% of any book. Ovid Ovid provides access to over 200 e-books covering various aspects of clinical medicine, including many Oxford Handbooks. From the Ovid homepage, click Books on the top bar: You can browse books by title, or by subject or do a Quick Search : Click on a title to open the book. You can read online, or download chapters as HTML files to save or e-mail. Springer Springer s e-book collection delivers access to a huge collection of scientific, technical and medical publications. Up to the end of October, 2014 you have access to all of Springer s post 2005 e-book collection; this gives you over 42,000 books to choose from.
From the Springer homepage, click Sign up/log in on the top right hand side: Next click on Institutional/Athens log in and, under Log in via Athens, select your institution as NHS and click Proceed to Athens. Enter a search term. Once you get to the results page, under the Date Published filter make sure you select a date range from 2005 onwards. Then select the book filter.
