This means that you can read items on the screen rather than in printed form and use them at home on your own December 2016
2 Accessing E-books INTO Manchester has 2 large collections of e-books (online textbooks) covering a wide range of subjects from language to science, useful for every course taught at INTO Manchester. These are called: 1) MyiLibrary 2) Ebsco e-books To log into both these collections, you need your OpenAthens password. You need to COME INTO THE LEARNING CENTRE to fill in a form for this password. It is important that you do this as soon as possible. Accessing E-books via Myilibrary Go to http://intolearningcentre.co.uk/online-resources/ and look for the logo Click on the logo or click on Log in here Log into OpenAthens using your Open Athens username and password. If you do not have a password, please ask the Learning Centre staff. Once you log in, select Myilibrary from the menu You will be asked to log in: DO NOT! Just look down the page and select please click here to access the OpenAthens Authentication Point» 2
Using MyiLibrary for a specific book 3 When MyiLibrary opens you will see a large search box Only use this box if you know the EXACT title of the book you are looking for. Example: if you are looking for Exploring British Politics and know this is the correct title, put this name in the box and click Search A results screen then appears; once you have the results of the search, click on Open Now by the item you want. The text of the book appears on screen. For details of printing/saving pages from the book, see page 6 Using MyiLibrary by topic /subject On the opening page of Myilibrary, click on Browse by Subject 3
The following screen opens, listing the different subject areas: 4 Click on SEE ALL by the subject/topic you are interested in. Example: for English Grammar books, click SEE ALL by Language and Literature This will give you a list of books in this topic area available for you to read on the screen; click on Open Now by any item you want to read. Using E-Books for research Using the Advanced Search box on the opening page of MyiLibrary, you may search across all the E-books in MyiLibrary. You are searching for your topic inside the electronic books Click on Advanced Search on the opening screen Decide what phrase/words you want to search for. The more specific/ exact you can be, the better! Example: if you want to research the marketing topic social media, use this exact phrase, rather than the broad term marketing. 4
Use the exact phrase box Select Start Search at the bottom of the page 5 A results page then appears. Click on the title of each result (NOT Open Now) to see where the phrase occurs in that book. A list of page numbers where the term you have searched for appears will be shown Simply click on the page number highlighted, and it will take you straight to the inside of the book, to the exact page where the phrase occurs. 5
6 For example, click on Page 443 and you go straight to that page. Clever! Saving & printing E-books On the opening page of the book you are reading, click on the download icon. This will tell you how many pages you are allowed to save & print. Please note: you are allowed to save up to 10% of any book, so this will vary according to the size of the book. Select the pages you wish to save. These are downloaded as a PDF. Save the PDF and you can then print these pages (if needed!) 6
7 Accessing E-books via Ebsco Ebsco covers over 5,000 academic journals, but also has a collection of e-books that you will find useful. Go to http://intolearningcentre.co.uk/online-resources/ and click on the tab Open Athens & E-Resources (also on the side menu bar) Click on the OpenAthens logo This will open the following screen: Use your OpenAthens Username and Password to log in. If you do not have a username/ password, come into the Learning Centre and ask staff. Once logged in, the following screen appears with a Google style large box. Enter the topic you are searching for in the box and press Search. Note: if you are looking for a particular book/ a specific title, change the box from keyword to title and put the name of the book in the search box You can also search by author, by changing the search box to author 7
When your results appear, using the left-hand menu, select Content Provider 8 Then choose ebookcollection to limit to online ebooks in the Ebsco collection Results appear in order of relevance; you can select to download the whole book to read on screen by choosing Or you can select to look at the Most Relevant Pages from the book where your search phrase appears On the opening page of the book you are reading, select Save Pages This will tell you how many pages you are allowed to save and print it varies according to the size of the book. Select the pages you wish to save. These are downloaded as a PDF. Save the PDF and you can then print these pages (if needed!)
