Bradford College Library Service How to find and access e-books from the Library Catalogue An increasing number of books are now available in electronic format as e-books or electronic books. The College has over 5000 e-books which you can read in full text via the Internet. The majority of our e-books are available on four main platforms or websites Dawsonera, MyiLibrary, ProQuest EBook Central and Safari Books Online. The easiest way to find and access e-books is to search the Library Catalogue http://librarycatalogue.bradfordcollege.ac.uk/ just like you would for printed books. Enter your search terms in the search box. You can search for an author, a title or a keyword. For example, Stella Cottrell Study Skills Handbook enter the terms cottrell and study skills handbook If the book is available electronically the Location will be Online Resources. The name of the e-book platform will be displayed for example DAWSONERA. You can also limit your search to just e-books by selecting E-book from Item types on the left hand side of the screen under Refine Your Search. Library Services, Revised August 2017 page 1
To access the title that you have searched for online click on the link Online access, this is accessible from the search results and from the full record for the book. How you access the full text of the e-book depends on which platform the e-book is hosted Dawsonera, MyiLibrary, ProQuest EBook Central or Safari. Dawsonera uses EZproxy to authenticate access on and off campus. Whether you are accessing an e-book on the Dawsonera platform on or off campus the process is the same. From the Library Catalogue click on the link Enter your College username and password at the Bradford College EZproxy Login Page. You will be asked to log in both on and off campus. You can then choose to download the e-book or to read the e-book online Library Services, Revised August 2017 page 2
The e-book will always open on the Title page. You can go to a particular page by entering the exact page number or you can navigate using the Table of Contents on the left hand side. You can also add notes, search within the text, copy text and print. You can download an e-book from the Dawsonera platform onto the local drive of your computer or a memory stick for a period of up to 3 days. You will lose access after this time but you can always go back and download the title again. Copy and print facilities are not available from the downloaded PDF, but during the download period, you can make annotations, highlight text and use Adobe Reader accessibility options. In order to read a downloaded e-book you will need Adobe Digital Editions. You'll also need the Bluefire e-reader app if you want to read the downloaded e-book on an iphone, ipad or Android mobile device. Dawsonera provides links to the software you need when you begin the download process. Please note that there may be some e-book titles where the length of time you can download the title for or read online has been restricted by the publisher. MyiLibrary uses the UK Federation (Shibboleth) to authenticate access on and off campus. From the Library Catalogue click on the link Enter your College username and password at the Bradford College Login Page. You will be asked to log in both on and off campus. All the links to MyiLibrary e-books from the Library catalogue take you to the opened e-book ready for you to read online. Some MyiLibrary e-books can be used by more than one person at a time; others have a single-user limit. To copy a page or page ranges select the download button You can also use the download button to download a whole book to read offline. Only download the e-book if you would like to read it offline on a personal computer or device. Select Add to Bookshelf for Download. If you have not already done so, MyiLibrary will prompt you to log in to your MyiLibrary account. If you do not have an account, use the option to create one. MyiLibrary will display a message Title was added to bookshelf Click MY ACCOUNT Then select Bookshelf Select the Download link In order to read a downloaded e-book you will need Adobe Digital Editions. ProQuest Ebook Central uses the UK Federation (Shibboleth) to authenticate off campus access. From the Library Catalogue click on the link On campus you will not need to log in to Ebook Central. If you are accessing an e-book off campus you will need to log in. Enter your College username and password at the Bradford College Login Page. You can go to a particular page by entering the exact page number or you can navigate using the Table of Contents on the right hand side. Use the navigation bar buttons to copy, print, add notes and to zoom in or out. You can download chapters or page ranges as a PDF document from Ebook Central. Only download the e-book if you would like to read it offline on a personal computer or device. You can download the e-books to your computer or other mobile devices and e-readers (but not the Kindle). If you are on campus you will need to Sign In using your College username and password to download the e-book. You will need to install Adobe Digital Editions on the computer or device you are using to read the e-book. If you have already installed ADE then click on Done with this step >. Safari uses the UK Federation (Shibboleth) to authenticate off campus access. From the Library Catalogue click on the link Click on the START READING button. On campus you will not need to log in to Safari Books Online. If you are accessing an e- book off campus you will need to log in. Scroll down to the bottom of the page using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the screen. Library Services, Revised August 2017 page 8
Click on UK Federation Users Sign In. Type Bradford College into the search box and then click on Search or Sign In. Enter your College username and password at the Bradford College Login Page. You can now read the book online. You can search for keywords in the text, go to a particular page or chapter, print pages and select different ways to read and view the book.
