Choosing Large Ensembles Intermediate Band. The difficulty level of the music will be easy and intermediate. Some time will be spent on performance techniques. Conductors: Priscilla Brown and Mary Gillard Advanced Band is for players who want to be challenged with music that is more difficult than the music most New Horizons Bands play. The difficulty level will be 2.5 and up. Conductors: Roy Ernst and Kate Levy Unsure of which band to select? If you have been to a New Horizons camp before, you will probably know which band you should choose. Your teacher may also be able to give you guidance. If you are unsure and would like some help, send a list of 5 or 6 band pieces or lesson pieces that you can comfortably play to chqnhima2018@gmail.com. Full Orchestra is for all string players and advanced players on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba and percussion. Wind instrumentation will be limited to one person per part, so you should be comfortable playing an advanced part on your own. Laura Joss and Edie Shillitoe String Orchestra is for string players only. Laura Joss Choosing Small Ensembles and Other Classes How many classes should I take? There are five class or rehearsal periods of ninety minutes each per day. Playing your instrument in all of those periods would be more than 7 hours of playing per day an amount that could lead to muscle soreness and fatigue for most people. Think of three or four classes as a full load and consider taking some classes in which you will not play your instrument, such as Chorus, Ukulele, or Percussion 101. Many participants leave one period free for rest and just walking around to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Sectionals If you are playing in the Full Orchestra, Advanced Band or Intermediate Band, one of your choices should be the sectionals for that band, e.g. a clarinet player in the intermediate band should sign up for the intermediate woodwind sectional. All-levels Classes For some classes, you won t be playing your usual instrument, so musicians of all levels of experience are welcome to sign up. For others, you will be playing your usual instrument, but musicians of all levels of experience would enjoy participating. All-levels classes are marked with an *. String Players Although string players tend to think of choosing classes that are specifically for strings, you can meet some new players and teachers and broaden your experience by including other choices, such as Chorus, Ukulele, Percussion 101 or NHIMA Leadership. Faculty Biographies John H. Beck is held in highest regard by many musicians for he is unsurpassed in his contributions to the percussion community. He received his B.M. -1955 and M.M. - 1962 from the Eastman School of Music. He retired from the Eastman School of Music in 2008 after 49 years of teaching. He is now Professor Emeritus of Percussion at Eastman. He is also the retired timpanist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. As a performer he has made many solo appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Wind Ensemble and has soloed with and conducted many percussion ensembles both in the United States and abroad. His clinics are a feature at many percussion festivals around the world. Mr. Beck is a Past President of the Percussive Arts Society having served as NY State Chapter President and Second and First Vice President of this international organization. He is a composer having had his works published by leading publishing companies and has recorded for CRI, Turnabout, Mark Records and Heritage Records. Mr. Beck has written many articles on percussion for leading music journals. He is the editor of Encyclopedia of Percussion and has written several instruction books for snare drum, drum set and timpani. His most recent publication is PERCUSSION MATTERS: Life at the Eastman School of Music (2011). He was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 1999. Priscilla Brown After completing a preparatory degree at Eastman, Priscilla Todd Brown studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she graduated with a degree in oboe performance. A professional oboist, Priscilla has played, toured, and recorded with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Bethlehem Bach Orchestra. She played with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for a number of years and with many other local groups. Her Master s degree in education is from Nazareth College. Priscilla directed the bands and music program at East High School in the City of Rochester for almost twenty years, and received the Rochester Philharmonic Musicians' Award for Outstanding Music Educators (Instrumental Music - Band) in 2002. She is delighted to continue conducting with the New Horizons Band. Ken Carper is a native of Pennsylvania. His Bachelor of Music degree is from Boston`s Berklee College of Music, known for jazz education and performance. Shortly after graduating Ken found out playing jazz is difficult and doesn t pay much. During summer breaks from his teaching job he attended Rochester s Eastman School of Music studying under the tutelage of the oft-imitated but never equaled, Roy Ernst. Eastman is known for education and performance in classical music. Shortly after obtaining his Masters Ken found that playing classical music is difficult and doesn t pay much. Due to a considerable stroke of good luck, he was offered a full scholarship to attend the University of Hawaii to work on his Ph.D. U of H is noted for world music styles. And you guessed it, these styles are all difficult to play and don t pay much. But he hasn t given up. For the past twelve years he has been directing the New Horizons Band in Naples, FL, teaching World Music and Music History at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, FL, and playing ukulele in all of his spare time. Roy Ernst, Professor Emeritus at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, started the first New Horizons Band in 1991 at Eastman. He received grants over a period of several years from NAMM, The International Music Products Association to start the first New Horizons Band and to assist in starting New Horizons Programs in other locations, causing some people to call him The Johnny Appleseed of Music for Adults. Currently there are more than 230 New Horizons Bands, Orchestras, and Choruses in the United States and Canada and many more are in the planning phase. Roy serves as the advisor to the New Horizons Board of Directors. He has written articles and books on music education, conducting, and performance. Roy earned a Ph. D. from The University of Michigan and has received honors from MENC, Delta Omicron, Wayne State University, and The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Roy was awarded an honorary doctorate from Western University in Ontario. In addition to teaching at Eastman, he has taught at Wayne State University, Georgia State University and the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Australia. His hobbies include learning to play new instruments, bike riding, walking, travel, and doing lots of dishes for his wife, Pat, a chef. Mary Gillard graduated from Western University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Music, Honours in Education. She retired in June of 2014 after 31 years of teaching music in London at Clarke Road Secondary School. She introduced classical guitar in 1985 and built a highly successful four-year program with several students continuing on to develop their musical skills. Mary also taught vocal and instrumental music and was vocal director and keyboard player for 15 school shows. Mary sang with The Gerald Fagan singers for 9 years and

during that time performed in three European tours and three recordings. She continues to sing in a community choir in St. Thomas and direct her own chamber choir, For the Love of Singing', from her home studio. Mary started conducting for the NHB program in London, Ontario in 2000. She has witnessed significant growth in the program and is thrilled to be part of such a vibrant organization. She was invited to be part of the music camp at Brock University in 2012 and fell in love with the "music camp" experience. In 2015 she was guest conductor at both NEMC and Chautauqua music camps. Mary is passionate about teaching. She is highly respected for her musicianship and knowledge of pedagogy. In her free time she enjoys gardening and cooking and teaching private music lessons. Russ Grazier Jr., composer and saxophonist, is a native of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and has taught saxophone, composition, and music theory for over 25 years at some of the most prestigious music schools in the country including Boston Conservatory, the University of Chicago and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. In 2002 Russ co-founded the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC), a non-profit community music and visual arts school serving more than 800 students. He has been Executive Director at PMAC for the past fifteen years. In 2003 he started the Portsmouth New Horizons Band conducting the group for the past fifteen years. Russ has been composer in residence with Chicago s CUBE Ensemble and his music has been performed by the Contemporary Chamber Players of Chicago, the West End String Quartet, CUBE, and many other ensembles and soloists. Russ is past president of Art-Speak, the cultural commission for the city of Portsmouth, where he lives with his wife, Katie, and their two sons, Max and Jake. Laura L. Joss has served the Music Education Department at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio since 1997, where she teaches instrumental music education methods and foundational classes, and has conducted numerous Conservatory Community Music School Ensembles. Prof. Joss earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, her Masters of Music Education degree at Loyola University of New Orleans, and is currently completing her doctoral coursework at Case Western Reserve University. Her experience includes working with instrumentalists of all ages and all levels of experience in orchestras and bands. She is deeply committed to community outreach and is the founding Director of the B-W New Horizons Music Program that provides beginning instrumental music instruction for adults of all ages. Prof. Joss enjoys being active both nationally and internationally as an adjudicator, guest conductor, music education consultant and clinician for both bands and orchestras throughout North and South America and Europe. Patti Kroth founded the Michigan State University Community Music School New Horizons Band in 2002. She began New Horizons, Too! In 2008 when she returned to public school teaching as a band director in the East Lansing (MI) Public Schools. Patti earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College, and a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where she was a student of Roy Ernst. Patti taught instrumental music in the public schools at all levels in New York, Colorado, and South Dakota. She has taught at New Horizons Music camps in Chautauqua, NY, Unicoi, GA, and Interlochen, MI. Prior to moving to Michigan, Patti was a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Sioux Falls and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. Patti lives in Michigan with her husband, Michael. They have two children: Daniel, a student at Michigan State University and Heidi, a student at Lawrence University. Kate Levy is a music education professor at the State University of New York at Fredonia and music director of the New Horizons Band of Western New York. She holds Ph.D. and Master s degrees in music education from the University of Iowa and an undergraduate music education degree from Northwestern University, where she studied horn. Kate has taught musicians of all ages (early childhood New Horizons) in school and community settings in five U.S. states. She taught horn and led brass choir in the early years of the Iowa City New Horizons Band, and she founded the Hagerstown (Maryland) New Horizons Band before moving to Fredonia. In 2018, Kate co-authored the textbook, Introduction and Practical Guide to Music Education, with Fredonia colleague Laura Dornberger. Edie Shillitoe has been teaching strings for over 35 years, and has been involved in string education at every level, from kindergarten to college. A graduate of Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, with a Masters from Syracuse University, Mrs. Shillitoe started her career in Marin County, Calif., where she taught beginning strings and received Suzuki training at the University of San Francisco. From there she moved to Houston, Texas, and taught in the music magnet program at the Houston Independent School District, where she directed a large elementary program which included a 40 piece kindergarten violin ensemble. Recently retired from public school teaching in the Chittenango Central School district where she directed the high school orchestra and chamber orchestra, Mrs. Shillitoe is currently teaching and arranging music in upstate New York. Mrs. Shillitoe has taught string methods classes at Syracuse University and is currently directing the Salt City New Horizons Orchestra program for adults in the Syracuse area. Mrs. Shillitoe has conducted orchestras for Area All State festivals at the high school level, and enjoys guest conducting throughout New York State at NYSSMA All County Festivals.

A frequent guest clinician and NYSSMA adjudicator, she is currently the Past President of New York American String Teachers Association. Mrs. Shillitoe resides in Fayetteville, New York, where she has a private studio. Sue Steiger graduated from California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Music Degree. She has completed graduate work at California State University, Long Beach, California State University at Los Angeles, Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University. With a career spanning 33 years, Sue began her teaching career in 1979 in East Los Angeles. She retired in 2012 from the Bend-La Pine School District after 27 years. Sue is a member of the National Association of Music Educators, Oregon Music Educators Association and the New Horizon Band Association. In 2008 she received the Rotary award for Excellence in Education. She has been the host conductor of the New Horizon Band Camp in Bend and guest conductor at the 2005 and 2008 band camps in Olympia, Washington. As director of the Cascade Horizon Band since its inception in January 2003, Sue has brought the band from exercises in beginning and intermediate band books to a high school/college level repertoire. Well-loved by band members, Sue's good humor and ability to raise a band of wide-ranging abilities up to concert performance level is remarkable! In addition, some of our small ensembles are open to guests. On the registration form, you can ask about an activity which you would like to do, and perhaps we can set you up with others of like interests. Double Occupancy Campers who wish double occupancy come in many varieties. Sometimes a couple will both want to play. Sometimes a couple will include a player and a guest. Sometimes two friends will want to share a room. Sometimes a single camper will want to share a room, but not have a roommate in mind. No doubt there are other varieties. We have tried to accommodate all varieties with the form below. Couples with shared finances can send one copy, with the number 2 in the right places. Friends with separate finances can send two copies with the number 1 in the right places, listing each other as the desired roommate.
