Read the following passage before answering the questions which follow. The passage is adapted from Beetle Boy by M.G.Leonard. In this passage, Darkus makes an unusual discovery outside his new house, As Humphrey jumped back to avoid the cars, a gigantic black beetle dropped out of his trouser leg and landed on the road. Darkus blinked and leant forward to get a better look. The beetle looked deadly -like a ninja warrior. A fierce tusk, sharp as a tiger's claw, stuck out of its head, flanked by two smaller horns on its thorax. He looked about. No one seemed to have noticed the incredible insect that was now crawling towards him. Mr Patel was standing in the doorway of his shop with his arms crossed. He was scowling. Angry drivers were blasting their car horns taking no notice of the boy kneeling on the pavement. The beetle continued his advance towards Darkus, slowly and steadily, like a miniature tank. As it got closer, Darkus realised it was easily the size of a hamster. He wanted to get closer, but it was so alien-looking that he was a bit scared to approach it. He didn't know if it might bite or sting - and that horn looked sharp. The giant insect had reached his feet, and before he could think about whether it was a good idea or not, he was reaching down to touch the tip of its horn. It was sharp. "Whoah, you're cool!" he said, realising his heart was thumping in his chest. Mesmerised, Darkus extended his hand and watched as the creature clambered up, stood still and looked at him expectantly. What surprised him was the weight of the insect -he'd assumed it would be light, but it felt solid and reassuring, like a pebble. He carefully lifted his hand. "Hello there." Looking up from underneath, he could see the features of the beetle's face, He couldn't have said why but it somehow looked...friendly. Its bulbous eyes glistened like blackberries, and it was holding its mouth open as if it was trying to smile. Although the beetle appeared to be pitch black from above, underneath it had ginger hair sticking out from the gaps between its joints. It was almost cute. ****************************************** 5

Question 5 (15 marks) Below the extract has been rewritten, often using different words. Where words or phrases are missing, lines have been drawn. Please fill in the gaps with one or more words that show that you have understood what you have read. Try to use your own words, if you can. As Humphrey to avoid the, a black beetle fell out of his clothes. Darkus blinked and to the beetle. It looked like. No one seemed to notice the insect that was now. As it got Darkus saw it was easily a hamster. He was scared and didn't know if the creature. "Whoah, you're cool!" Darkus said, realising. Darkus his hand as the beetle. *************************************************************** 6
