2 of 6 11/10/2014 11:36 AM JUST A NOTE Why this newsletter? So I can send you an Autumn greeting! I have a special sale/ book signing announcement, a seasonal poem to share, as well as other bits and pieces from my life. Woods behind our house in Autumn Upcoming: CHRISTMAS! Full (Evening) Dress, NOVEMBER 1819 My November Guest By Robert Frost Frost is one of my favorite poets. Famous for the beautiful and haunting imagery of his beloved New Hampshire which permeates much of his work, he wrote such classics as, "The Road Not Taken," (a poem I can still recite by heart) "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening," and other poems you probably read in grade school. Be an early shopper this year and ease the holiday stress before it happens! As a teen, I became enamored of the melancholy tone that is unmistakable in some of the poems, such as "My November Guest." This was written in 1900 shortly after the deaths of Frost's eldest son and then his mother--which explains the presence of the guest he personifies as a female, "She." And yet this guest is exquisitely sensitive to the beauties of the dying world, compelling Frost not to miss the glory of the season, despite the loss of verdure and sunshine. In fact, sorrow sees the muted grays and browns of Autumn perhaps better than joy. The late Autumn-world may be dull and ruined to some, but she sees its beauties in sharp relief. I have always enjoyed the quiet solitude of a certain type of Autumn day--the kind that Frost captures perfectly here. I suggest you brew a cup of good, strong tea and be cozy, preferably in front of a window with a good Autumn view--then enjoy the poem!
3 of 6 11/10/2014 11:36 AM My November Guest My Sorrow, when she's here with me, Thinks these dark days of autumn rain Are beautiful as days can be; She loves the bare, the withered tree; She walks the sodden pasture lane. Her pleasure will not let me stay. She talks and I am fain to list: She's glad the birds are gone away, She's glad her simple worsted gray Is silver now with clinging mist. The desolate, deserted trees, The faded earth, the heavy sky, The beauties she so truly sees, She thinks I have no eye for these, And vexes me for reason why. Not yesterday I learned to know The love of bare November days Before the coming of the snow, But it were vain to tell her so, And they are better for her praise. Robert Frost BOOK NEWS My newest book, a YA suspense, is being shopped around by agent Erin Buterbaugh from MacGregor Literary. I can't wait to share more details with you!
