Operation Mounting the DRR-2T The DRR-2T is designed for mounting into a standard 19 EIA rack cabinet, with a minimum depth of 240mm. No special requirements for ventilation or cooling need to be observed. The height requirement for the DRR-2T is 1RU rack space. Selection Of The Antenna When installing your DRR-2T digital receiver, it is important to verify the quality and physical condition of your existing antenna. If you are considering using your existing TV or indoor antenna it may not be suitable for DAB reception. Ideally DAB requires the use of a vertically polarized external antenna. This ensures good reception quality. The recommended antenna connector type for use with the DRR-2T is an F type with 75ohm/RG6 coaxial cable. Also where possible, keep the DRR-2T away from potential sources of RF noise such as computers, televisions, etc. This will minimize the possibility of any interruption in audio performance. A competent antenna installer can advise you on the specific antenna requirement for both DAB and FM reception. About Dual Tuner Operation The DRR-2T is a dual tuner DAB / FM receiver and as such signifies that each tuner s configuration parameters are independent and can therefore be configured for two separate listening zones. Before configuring the operation of the DRR-2T and only when using the front panel controls, it is important to remember to select either Tuner 1 or Tuner 2. To select the appropriate tuner press TUNER SELECT when in the normal operational mode. If using a host controller with RS232 or IR, the software provided with these products influence how each tuner is accessed. Configuration / Setup Procedures There are a three control modes used to configure / setup the operation of the DRR-2T. 1. Via the RS232 port with a host controller; 2. Via the 3.5mm IR port with a host controller, or a pre-programmed DRR-2T code specific wireless IR Remote Control Unit; 3. Via the front panel controls and LCD display (This is only recommended for initial setup or troubleshooting without the connection of a host controller). The DRR-2T is intended for use in a distributed audio system with control automation. There are two types of control interface ports available for use with the DRR-2T, these being IR and RS232. Both the IR and RS232 ports require direct connection to a host controller. The IR port allows for simple functional control, whereas the RS232 port allows for a comprehensive bi-directional monitoring and control scenario. Refer to Fig 1. RS232 /IR connection diagram. Connect the DRR-2T using suitable IR or RS232 interface cable to the host controller. It is recommended that reception (antenna) and equipment inter-connection, utilize high quality cabling. Also ensure that all connections are reliably secured before turning the DRR-2T ON. Summary Of The Main Menus The LCD will selectively display seven main menu items when using any of the control modes, i.e. 8 DRR-2T Operation
front panel control, RS232 or IR. The following illustrations summarize the Main Menus used in the DRR-2T. Any sub-menus associated with each of the main menu items is not shown. The menu details as shown are only applicable after the initial tuning is completed. Setup Procedure Using the Front Panel Controls The following will detail the basic setup procedures if using the front panel controls. If the setup procedure utilizes the RS232 or IR ports to communicate with the DRR-2T, then please refer to the appropriate section DRR- 2T RS232 Control Protocol or DRR-2T IR Control protocol. Initial Tuning For DAB Reception Note: As a precaution, reduce the volume level on the attached pre-amplifier/amplifier. This is to keep the volume at a safe level and minimizes the possibility of inadvertent high volume levels damaging the attached speakers. When the DRR-2T is powered ON for the first time, it will automatically perform a Quick Scan for all local Band III DAB services. Both DAB Tuners 1 and 2 are simultaneously tuned. The acquired DAB services are then stored and updated as required. A readout showing the tuning progress is displayed on the front panel LCD. A DAB station list is created and stored in alpha-numeric order. The FM services are not tuned automatically and will require a separate tuning procedure. Refer to the section Tuning For FM Reception. DRR-2T Operation 9
10 DRR-2T Operation Fig 1. Connection Overview Using RS23 or IR
On completion of the Quick Scan, the DRR-2T will lock to a known DAB station/service. Audio for that station should be heard. The next consideration is that all or some of the DAB stations be stored as Presets. Refer to the section on Storing A Preset and Tuning To A Station Using A Stored Preset. If no stations are found, check and verify that all wiring and connections associated with the antenna are working and is correctly terminated. To confirm the signal strength of a station, refer to the six stepped vertical line segment indicator. This indicator displays the relative strength of signal being received. Maximum signal strength is when all segments are active. Also refer to the section on Diagnostics. 4. The DRR-2T begins to incrementally search forward (Auto Scanning) from the lowest to highest frequency. An incremental search means that once a valid frequency/station is found the user must push the Æ button to search to tune to the next valid frequency/station. If fine tuning or manual tuning is required press either the Ç or È navigation buttons. In manual mode tuning is incremented in Tuning For FM Reception 50kHz steps. However, before pressing the TUNE button to search for the next incremental frequency/station, it is highly recommended that you consider setting the current station as a Preset. Setting a Preset for each required FM frequency ensures quick access to those stations. for Refer to the sections on Storing A Preset and Tuning to a Station Using A Stored Preset. 1. To tune to services in the FM band, press the MENU button on the front panel. 2. SWITCH BANDS menu item is displayed. 3. Press ENTER. Switch to FM / Tuning to FM is displayed. The default tuner is 1. If required tuner 2 can be selected by pressing the TUNER SELECT button. DRR-2T Operation 11
Changing From DAB To FM To change from DAB to FM mode or visa-versa: 1. Press the MENU button. 2. Select SWITCH BANDS by pressing ENTER button. 3. Confirm Switch to FM by pressing ENTER button. 4. Tuning to FM is displayed with the DRR-2T tuning to either the lowest FM frequency of 87.50MHz or the last listened to FM station. RDS (Radio Data System) Operation RDS is digital data embedded within the analog FM radio broadcast. This data may include Genre, Artist, Time, Station ID, etc. When tuned to a station containing RDS data, the DRR-2T will automatically display the relevant information on the front panel LCD. Note: Broadcasting RDS data is an option that radio stations may or may not transmit. Tuning For DAB Reception Scan DAB As tuning for DAB is automatically performed when power is first applied to the DRR-2T, the Scan DAB tuning option is only required when the DRR-2T is relocated to another city or state, or the DAB services require re-tuning manually. The following procedure applies: 1. Press the MENU button. 2. Press the Ç or È button until the SCAN DAB menu item is displayed and press ENTER button. 3. Press the Å button to select YES then ENTER. 4. The existing DAB parameters are cleared and re-tuning commences until all services are acquired. 12 DRR-2T Operation
