R&S PSL3 Industrial Controller At a glance Controllers play a major role in complex measurement systems because they must ensure smooth operation. The R&S PSL3 from Rohde & Schwarz is a controller that meets demanding requirements. The R&S PSL3 is a compact, powerful industrial controller. It has a large number of interfaces for fast and smooth integration in test environments. The R&S PSL3 features excellent EMC characteristics, a wide operating temperature range, a robust design and high reliability. The flexible expandability and secure follow-on development constitute a sustainable concept for the future. The controller was entirely developed by Rohde & Schwarz and is "made in Germany," which ensures availability of spare parts for years to come. Owing to the consistent development strategy based on the multiple use of important modules, the controller features an excellent price/performance ratio despite using high-quality components. Excellent price/performance ratio Although industrial controllers tend to be expensive, the R&S PSL3 is favorably priced. Focusing on the main functions made it possible to achieve an excellent price/ performance ratio despite the use of select hardware components. The sophisticated concept offers maximum flexibility. Functionality can be expanded almost limitlessly. Details matter Motherboard developed and produced in Germany The extremely complex motherboard of the R&S PSL3 combines CPU, chipset, graphics, GPIB as well as USB and Ethernet standard interfaces on one module. The motherboard has been exclusively developed and manufactured in Germany for Rohde & Schwarz. It is used not only in the R&S PSL3, but also in a variety of other devices from Rohde & Schwarz. Reliability and long life of this module therefore have a pivotal role. Extensive tests were introduced in production to keep the failure rate to a minimum. An energy-saving mobile processor cuts power consumption and thus heat dissipation in the controller interior, which in turn further increases component life. Excellent EMC values The outstanding EMC values of the R&S PSL3 block out all electromagnetic interference on the test setups. The controller was developed and designed strictly in accordance with EMC directives, with the core know-how of Rohde & Schwarz implemented in every aspect. Interfaces to the exterior have been specially filtered, and keyboard (R&S PSL-Z2 option) and mouse (R&S PSL-Z10 option) have also been very carefully selected and tested in accordance with the latest EMC directives. Software support 100 % compatible with standard Due to the x86 and Intel 64 compatible hardware architecture, standard operating systems and programs run smoothly. The R&S PSL3 is frequently used in system applications with special operating systems. Consequently, this industrial controller in its basic configuration is a pure hardware platform that can be optionally ordered with indows XP Embedded (R&S PSL-K12 option). Long-term availability of the components is a must with equipment from Rohde & Schwarz, and this also applies to the R&S PSL3. Nevertheless, should a failure occur at any time in the future, replacement modules will still be available. Robust and reliable with excellent EMC characteristics: The R&S PSL3 is a tried-and-tested system component that is used in transmitter and receiver systems with high field strengths as well as in test systems for measuring minimum-strength signals. Compact and flexible device concept Robust, highly expandable housing Despite its small dimensions, the robust housing is extremely expandable. In addition to two PCI express slots, the controller features four PCI slots, thus safeguarding investments in existing PCI systems that are based on this bus system and in some cases required expensive customization. Two ports are located at the front, which is especially advantageous in rackmounting (R&S ZZA-311 option). Two independent Ethernet controllers Two independent Ethernet controllers permit flexible integration of the R&S PSL3 in Ethernet networks (LANs). Here, too, one of the two interfaces is available on the front panel. Analog VGA connector and digital DVI interface In addition to the analog VGA standard connector, the R&S PSL3 also offers a digital DVI interface which allows operation of suitable TFT monitors without conversion losses (at different resolutions). The result is impressive truly brilliant images. GPIB interface Of course, an industrial controller would not be complete without a GPIB interface.
