EXPERIENCE IRELAND S MOST BEAUTIFUL OPERA FESTIVAL. FOUR NIGHTS OF OPERA IN THE SPECTACULAR SURROUNDINGS OF LISMORE CASTLE, CO WATERFORD. Plus a series of recitals in the unforgettable houses of the Blackwater Valley. May 29th June 3rd 2018

WELCOME TO IRELAND S ANCIENT EAST The Blackwater Valley, running through Ireland s Ancient East, is one of the most historic and beautiful parts of Ireland. Graceful stately homes, beautiful gardens and castles dot the river banks, and the most famous of all is Lismore Castle. Building on the legacy of the Lismore Opera Festival, and featuring opera that is unforgettable, excellent and fun, we are changing our name. The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival is a musical chance to connect with old friends and meet with new. The location plays a starring role, as guests picnic in the Castle gardens, or enjoy formal dining to get into the mood. Lismore is also home to Lismore Castle Arts, where during the Festival you can discover Rashid Johnson s exhibition at the gallery in the Castle Gardens, and the group exhibition, Where Facts Don t Matter at St Carthage Hall. Exploring the surrounding landscape, while enjoying music by established stars and faces of the future, and discovering some of the Great Houses of the Blackwater Valley are even more ingredients ingredient that makes this summer music festival so special. Come join us!

200 YEARS OF PASSION This year, Artistic Director, Dieter Kaegi, is delighted to have programmed Rossini s tale of intrigue, comedic mischance, and the triumph of love and of strong women! L Italiana in Algeri was premiered in Venice in 1813, and has been delighting audiences for more than 200 years. Fusing sustained energy with elegant melodies, the opera tells the tale of Elvira and Isabella, who must together make a plan to ensure that love will conquer all. Expect wonderful music along the way to the final rousing resolution. A concert in St Carthage s Cathedral makes the most of this beautiful building s wonderful acoustics, while the musical sessions at Dromore Yard, a restored romantic eighteenth century farm yard, are made even more special by lunch and dinner options, for the perfect day out. We are delighted to announce a new element to the programme: a talk by Peter Murray at Lismore s Red Hall, exploring the back stories and secret lives of some of the people who have made the Blackwater Valley their home, throughout the ages. Accompanied by pianist Denise Crowley, Gavan will sing Beethoven s An die ferne geliebte, and Schumann s beautiful Dichterliebe. 60 minutes, from 20.00 Friday June 1st Dromore Yard 12 Noon Masterpiece Series: The Irish Heritage Bursary Awards The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival Masterpiece series gives you a first look at future famous names, by showcasing the best in new musical voices. Although historically a Masterpiece was the piece of work produced by an apprentice in order to become a Master Craftsman, now it has come to mean an artist s greatest work. We think we have a little of both with this concert featuring winners of the Irish Heritage Bursary Awards. Pianist Adam Heron will play pieces by Chopin and Scriabin. Maria McNamee s harp programme includes Marcel Grandjany s Fantasy on a theme of Haydn, which is haunting and joyful by turns. Soprano Rebecca Murphy s wonderful programme features pieces by Mendelssohn, Duparc and Samuel Barber, linked by texts that have been set by Irish poets. 60 minutes, from 20.00 Friday June 1st Dromore Yard 3.00 pm Guests from the Garsington and Nevill Holt Operas Opera Festivals have created excitement, energy, and brought opera to new audiences in some truly gorgeous settings. The programme includes Mendelssohn duets, solos by Schubert (Tristan) and Fauré (Alison), and a memorable set of folksongs from Benjamin Britten. 60 minutes, from 20.00 Saturday June 2nd St Carthage s Cathedral 12 Noon Masterpiece Series: Máire Carroll We are delighted to welcome the RDS Collins Memorial Award winning Pianist, Máire Carroll to play a very special concert at St Carthage s Cathedral, Lismore. This concert is being given in support of the community at Lismore, with all proceeds going to The Cathedral Fund and its chosen charities. Fresh from the success of her debut album, ROADS, Máire s concerts are hugely engaging affairs. For Lismore, she has put together a programme that includes Bach s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D Minor, two pieces written especially for her by Sebastian Adams and inspired by the events of 1916, works by French composer Cécile Chaminade, together with some sunny moments from Gershwin and Rodgers & Hammerstein. 60 minutes 20.00 This concert is free for under 18s, students and OAPs (Reservation required) (Ticket holders for this recital can also enjoy the gorgeous Salterbridge Gardens, and an art exhibition featuring the work of Mary Lincoln, Cormac Boydell and Poppy Hunt).
