10) use replacement To prevent electric shock and avoid risk of fire, replace fuse only with the same type and rating. 11) To prevent electric shock, do not use the 64 polarized plug with and extension cord, receptacle or other outlet unless the blades can be fully inserted to prevent blade exposure. 12) Grounding or Polarization o not defeat the grounding or polarization of the 64. 13) ooling - Ventilation for cooling is provided to the 64 via four rear panel mounted fans. These fans draw cooling air through the chassis from the openings on the front panel. To avoid damage to the unit, do not block the fans or the front panel openings. o not disconnect the fans. THR R NO USR SRVIL PRTS IN TH 64. However, individual cards can be swapped by the user. Power On Sequence /TUV/UL/S It is recommended that the 64 igital rame(s) are powered on after all the other System 5 components have been powered on and the Virtual Mixer has been loaded in all the corresponding igital Pilot computers. The 64 is fully compliant. ocumentation is available from the factory. 64 igital rame Manual Version 1.0 1999, Inc. Page 5

omponent Overview unctional escription pplications The 64 igital rame is the igital Signal Processing enter of System 5. igital udio is routed to and from the 64 in MI. ontrol of the 64 is provided by a igital Pilot omputer (one per 64,) which in turn communicates with the System 5 ontrol Surface. Thus the 64 is under control of the System 5 system operator. The 64 assembly is a standard 19 rack width and 9RU high. In its role of igital Signal Processing enter for System 5, the 64 performs three functions; Signal I/O Signal Routing and Synchronization Signal Processing There are 3 different types of cards in the 64 that address each of the above functions. The number and type of cards in the 64 are configurable. There are one to four 64 frames per System 5, each of which can contain up to 14 cards. One S253d igital Pilot is required for each 64. Signal I/O MM641 MI Interface ard ll audio I/O is handled by the MM641 MI Interface ard. MI signals input at 24 bit fixed point resolution are converted to 32 bit floating point resolution for distribution over the backplane to other cards (the Signal Processor ards use 40 bit floating point processing internally see below). ach MM641 card can input 224channels and output 224 channels of audio (56 channels per MI port.) The MI cards can also support 64 channel MI if an application requires this. When operating at 96kHz sample rates, each MI port handles 28 audio channels. Signal Routing and Synchronization 631 rame ontroller ard ll patching between I/O, hannels, and usses is done on the Time ivision Multiplexed(TM_ bus and controlled by the 631 rame ontroller ard. The 631 ard also provides a irewire interface to the S253d Pilot omputer. The 64 includes a slot for a backup 631 card, for applications where maximum fault tolerance is required. The 64 typically acts as a Sample Rate Slave in System 5 synchronization, although it can be a Master if desired. The Sync Source section on the 631 front panel allows the user to select between S or Word Sync (slave mode) or Internal Sync (master mode). Once locked to the selected sync source, the 631 distributes a sync clock to the other cards in the 64 frame and outputs a reference clock on its S and Word sync output connectors. The master Sample Rate clock signal for the 64 and all System 5 system components comes from the Studio Hub (SH612), which in turn can be used to synchronize other digital components in the studio. 64 igital rame Manual Version 1.0 1999, Inc. Signal Processing SP661 Signal Processor ard The SP661 Signal Processor card performs all signal processing functions in the 64. This card comprises six nalog evices SHR processors, massive M facilities for transferring audio data, and a RIS PU for management of card functions. The programmable SP architecture on the SP661 card allows it to perform channel processing, mixing, or various other signal processing tasks. 64 igital rame Manual Version 1.0 1999, Inc. Page 7

This interface carries real-time control and metering data between the S253d and the 64. The cable from the S253d can be plugged into either of the two ports. hassis I isplay ach 64 chassis must be assigned a unique I which identifies it among multiple frames in a system. The I is set using a rotary switch located on the ackplane P. The System is shipped with the I switch preset to the proper number, so users will not normally need to access the switch. The switch position must match that of the corresponding igital Pilot computer. The sync source is changed by pressing the select button (a paper clip or similar tool is required) Refer to the System 5 Operation Manual for information on changing the sync source. Sample Rate Ls The bottom six Ls in the Sync Source section indicate the sample rate that is measured by the -631 card. Standard sample rates include 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, and the 0.1% pullup and pull-down rates associated with each of these standard rates.
