Auditions for Disney s Aladdin Roberto Clemente Middle School Information Packet Thank you for your interest in being in the cast of Disney s Aladdin! Please read this packet thoroughly as it includes very important information. Being in a musical is a lot of fun, but it also a significant time commitment. Please only audition if you are ready to work hard! ***Important: The attached Audition/Conflict form must be turned in to Mr. Stakem with a parent signature no later than September 11 th. This form will not be accepted late and only students who have turned in this form will be considered for roles in Aladdin. Students with early time frames should go home immediately following their audition, and students with later time frames should go home at the end of the school day and then come back to RCMS for their time slot. Thursday, September 12 th : Some students will be asked to attend Callbacks on this date from 3:15-5:00. Families will be notified via email on Wednesday evening if their student is asked to attend Callbacks. Friday, September 13 th : Final Cast List will be posted Important Information: Show Dates: November 8 th, 9 th Conflicts: Rehearsal attendance is mandatory and students will only be excused from rehearsals if there is an emergency situation or if there is a conflict listed on the attached Audition/Conflict Form. Please be sure that the information listed on this form is completely accurate. Rehearsal calendar: A detailed Rehearsal Calendar will be provided at the first rehearsal. Principals will rehearse 2-4 days per week and ensemble will rehearse 1-3 days per week. October 28-November 10: No conflicts will be accepted during this time period. If your child is cast, please be prepared to clear his/her calendar for these two weeks.
Family Volunteers: It takes a community to raise a curtain! We are asking every family to be prepared to volunteer at least one of the two performances as well as a few hours leading up to the show. Most theatre families are wonderful about volunteering many, many hours in the weeks prior to the performances. We are only able to do quality theatre with strong family support! Mandatory Parent/Guardian Meeting: After the cast has been selected, there will be a Parent/Guardian Information Meeting on Tuesday, September 24 th at 6:00pm in the media center. It is mandatory that at least one parent/guardian of every child in the show attend this meeting. Fees: Unlike many youth theatre companies which charge up to $1,000 for participation, school theatre is produced at minimal cost to students. A flat fee of $65.00 will be collected at the beginning of the rehearsal process. This fee includes a requested donation of $30 to defer production costs, a show T-shirt, a rehearsal meal, and a Cast Party. This is not a required participation fee and families who have questions about this fee are welcome to contact one of the directors. Transportation: The Activity Bus may not be available to transport students home after every rehearsal. Families will be expected to arrange transportation on days that the Activity Bus is not running and/or if our rehearsal ends later than the time the Activity Bus leaves. Casting: Casting decisions will be made based on the needs of the show. Factors which may influence casting decisions include: pitch and quality of singing voice, projection and diction of speaking voice, attitude and energy during audition process, school attendance, classroom behavior, and academic performance and effort. Just like school athletic teams, it may not be possible to cast every student who auditions. While extreme care is taken to ensure that the audition process is fair and fun for all participants, there are always a few students who are a little disappointed based on the casting results. Please discuss these possibilities with your child as well as appropriate reactions to casting results. If a student is not cast in this production, we hope that s/he will consider joining a Technical Crew (more information will be available in mid-october) and audition for future productions. Families with questions about how their child can be better prepared for future auditions are welcome to contact us. We look forward to auditions! Audition Tips 1. Be CONFIDENT! You will probably be a little nervous that s normal - but remember that we are on your side and we want you to do well. 2. Be LOUD! We are looking for actors who can be heard from the back of the theatre without a microphone. Project! 3. Speak CLEARLY! Don t mumble! Slow down actors need to speak a little slower than normal speech. Practice. 4. KNOW what you re saying! Remember it s your character who is saying these lines, not you as a RCMS student. You don t have to memorize (you can if you want) but be sure that you know what your character is saying and why s/he is saying it. If there are any words that you can t pronounce or define, look them up in the dictionary. 5. Be PROFESSIONAL! You may be asked to do something you re uncomfortable with, such as be the first person in your group to read or sing. If you complain, argue, or ask can someone else go first?, then you might not have as good of a chance of getting cast as someone else. Take direction! 6. LOOK professional! Actors tend to dress up for auditions because it makes them look professional and it makes directors take them seriously. You don t have to dress up, but it might be a good idea. 7. Be RESPONSIBLE! You will be given a monologue and some sheet music at the Prep Session. If you lose it and ask me for an extra, my first thought will be, hmm, if this student can t hold onto two pieces of paper for a few days, how will s/he hold onto a script for several weeks? Take care of yourself and your belongings. 8. ENJOY the experience! Maybe you ll get cast maybe you won t. Maybe you ll get the lead role maybe you ll be ensemble but the important thing is that you stepped out of your comfort zone to do something challenging. Enjoy the experience and don t stress yourself too much over the cast list.
