No music has ever sounded like this before. MOJO Conceived and Directed by Cora Bissett (Olivier award-winning RoadKill/ Smash hit political Musical Glasgow Girls ) and written by Kieran Hurley. ( Rantin, Beats, Chalk Farm ). Reflecting Martyn s own Scots- Canadian heritage, GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story will be an ambitious International collaboration with Montreal s renowned choreographer Dana Gingras and some of Canada s finest circus artists who will work with an ensemble of some of Scotland s most distinctive dancers and actors, and featuring at its core Martyn s groundbreaking dance music in its original form. This production will tell the painful yet inspiring story of a young man s phenomenal musical imagination, and his fierce fight against the cancer which ultimately robbed him of his short life at 33. His passion, his fierce love of life, music, the country and people who inspired him from Skye to Edinburgh, Glasgow to eventually Mull- are evoked and explored visually and physically in this high octane musical journey. Grit Fest To coincide with GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story we have curated Grit Fest; a special series of performances of musicians that worked with and were inspired by Martyn and his music. The musicians performing on Mull over Grit weekend have been chosen because of their connections with Martyn. Lau s fiddle player Aidan O Rourke included a beautiful piece called One For Martyn on his 2007 solo album commissioned by An Tobar. Much of that record was written by Aidan in the studio in An Tobar where Martyn used to work. Lau will be supported by Skye singer/songwriter Hector MacInnes, who recently won the Martyn Bennett commission award at the Queen s Hall in Edinburgh. Mr McFall s Chamber will be playing Birds & Beasts, the music of Martyn Bennett arranged by Robert McFall, demonstrating the extent to which Martyn was respected in the world of contemporary classical music. Young Lewis musician Mischa MacPherson brings her trio fresh from their appearance at the Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall where they were given the Young Folk Award. Martyn was always a great supporter of young musicians and the music from the Gaelic heartlands. India Alba, a Scotland/India collaboration, features the outstanding young piper Ross Ainslie, spotted by Martyn and tipped for a great career in music. Martyn also loved the tonality of Indian music. Mull musician Sorren Maclean was inspired by Martyn as a teenager, and played electric guitar on the Grit track Liberation. 6 Grit Fest Box Office 01688 302211

Mr McFall s Chamber Fri 20 June An Tobar 10pm 10/ 8 Lau and Hector MacInnes Thurs 19 June Aros Hall Tobermory 8.30pm 14/ 12 Lau have picked up three consecutive BBC Folk Awards for Best Group (2008 2010) with their take on modern folk music. Their sound is a collective musical journey that retains all the strengths of the original acoustic trio (Kris Drever vocals/guitar, Martin Green accordion, Aidan O Rourke fiddle). Lau refer to Martyn Bennett and his musical output as legendary. As Aiden O Rouke explains, We are lucky in this world of folk to have had many great visionaries which means the music evolves and progresses with a keen eye on what s gone before. This generation had Martyn Bennett. Respect. Liberation. Renowned for their innovative approach to programming and their informal take on classical music, Mr McFall s Chamber. They weave through tango and jazz to rock and contemporary classical, taking in quite a lot more besides. The strings of Mr McFall s are joined by Fraser Fifield (pipes/whistles), Paul Harrison (piano), Tom Bancroft and James Mackintosh (percussion), and they will be performing Martyn s music as recorded shortly after his death on the Birds & Beasts album. potentially the most important single development on the Scottish music scene for a long time Herald India Alba Sat 21 June An Tobar 10pm 10/ 8 A collaboration between two Indian and two Scottish musicians creating a unique sound. Since their debut album Reels and Ragas, they have developed a sound which reflects the broad common ground between their traditions. Many themes (raga gats), particularly those from the borders of the Himalayas, have close relatives in the melodies of the highlands and islands. For both, sounds of the bagpipes or the tampura play an important part. India Alba performed recently at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Delhi International Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Indian Music Conference Goa and the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. 8 Grit Fest Box Office 01688 302211

It s WW2 and due to rationing, there is not a drop of whisky to be had. Then the SS Cabinet Minister runs aground and the crew has to abandon the cargo 50,000 cases of the best quality export whisky! Uncle Varick Rapture Theatre Sat 24 May Druimfin 8pm 9/ 6 What happens when the rock and roll of swinging 60s London collides with the rock and moss of remote Scotland? Sandy Sheridan: pretentious art critic and self-proclaimed cultural icon returns from London, and home to his Scottish country pile with his new, much younger, wife in tow. Waiting for him are his stoical daughter Shona and his acerbic ex-brother in law: Uncle Varick. John Byrne s raucous adaptation of Chekov s classic Uncle Vanya, relocated to 1960s rural Scotland, is full of comedy, pathos, and some very dodgy chainsaws. Min Age 14 La Tragedie Comique Plutôt La Vie Sun 25 May Druimfin 8pm 9/ 6 Performer and director Tim Licata returns to Mull following the success of By The Seat Of Your Pants. In La Tragedie Comique, a one-man show, a fantastical character persuades his timid actor on to a quixotic journey of self discovery: staring down the devil and facing the fears and joys of life. Tim s unique blend of clowning and physical theatre creates a beautiful, tender and daring adventure. A Walk on the Edge of the World Magnetic North Fri 25 July Druimfin 8pm 10/ 8 A performance inspired by the art of walking, which involves the whole audience going for a walk together. A performer talks about his fascination with walking along the coast, sharing sounds and images, and leading the audience along the many paths his mind followed. The hidden secrets of the landscape and the constantly shifting border between land and sea lead him to understand that the past is always with us, whether we realise it or not. Ryan Keen & Support Tues 22 Apr An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Ryan s unusual guitar style and his husky, comforting baritone explores the light and shade of life and love, with a series of songs that are remarkable for their subtly rich arrangements and his intimate style of playing and singing you can hear him draw breath and feel the scrape of his fingers on the fretboard. Following a busy 2013 on the festival circuit, and a support slot with Newton Faulkner and Leona Lewis, we re delighted to welcome this bright young talent to An Tobar. Twelfth Day Tues 13 May An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 From opposite ends of Scotland, Orcadian Catriona Price (fiddle/vocals) and Esther Swift (harp/vocals) are at the forefront of innovative, alternative British folk music. With a fresh, openminded approach to song and instrumental writing, the duo create an entirely unique sound, interweaving masterful fiddle and harp playing with beautifully harmonised vocals in stylish and dynamic arrangements. Twelfth Day are set to tour the UK and Ireland for the launch of their new album The Devil Makes Three. This follows last year s EP Speak From The Start, and their acclaimed debut album Northern Quarter in 2010. In 2012, they released Fiere, a collaborative album with Gaelic singer Joy Dunlop. Recently, Twelfth Day won the Deutsche Bank Award in Performance and Composition to undertake their international folk music sharing project Routes to Roots. The project sees them travel to Canada, Malawi, Brazil and Mongolia to work with local musicians, and will culminate in them bringing musicians from each country over to Scotland to record and tour a collaboration binding the music of these five vibrant traditions together. Kris Drever Thurs 15 May Bunessan Hall 8.30pm Fri 16 May An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 He may be best-known as the guitarist with the bravely experimental trio Lau (who have been crowned Best Group three times now at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards), but Orcadian Kris Drever s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today s contemporary roots scene and stands on its own ground. Equally admired as a solo artist and as a musical collaborator with Donald Shaw, Roddy Woomble, Kate Rusby and Eddie Reader to name but a few, Kris s individualistic, genre-cutting guitar style and expressive, sturdy vocals are both authentic, masterful and full of integrity. Ethan Johns Mon 19 May Iona Hall 8.30pm Tues 20 May An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Producer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Ethan has built up an impressive list of collaborators, including Kings Of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, Laura Marling, Rufus Wainwright and Tom Jones. Fence and Comar present King Creosote s World Tour of Mull Tues 3 June Duart Castle 8.30pm Wed 4 June Creich Hall 8.30pm Thurs 5 June Calgary Gallery 8.30pm Fri 6 June An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Scottish indie-folk troubadour King Creosote is an artist like no other, and Comar is delighted to present this World Tour of Mull in collaboration with the Fifer s own Fence label. King Creosote has an incredible back catalogue of more than 40 albums, yet the evidence is clear that he is still making music at the very top of his game. His collaboration with John Hopkins, Diamond Mine, was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2011, and 3 On This Island, recorded in An Tobar on Mull, will be hotly anticipated when released on vinyl prior to this tour of Mull. This series of exclusive, acoustic gigs, taking in four of Mull s intimate venues, will feature songs from the new album performed by a hand-picked line up of musicians, including including King Creosote himself, 70s rock god Rich Young on keys, our very own Gordon Maclean on bass and Captain Geeko the Dead Aviator on percussion. Budapest Café Orchestra Sun 8 June Druimfin 8pm Mon 9 June Bunessan Hall 8pm Tues 10 June Iona Hall 8pm 10/ 8 We welcome the return of Budapest Café Orchestra with their powerful folk-based music from Eastern Europe, inspired by the music of Balkan gypsies. Four fabulous players of violins, guitar, accordion, double bass, saz & balalaika play an impassioned but often tender mixture of Hungarian Czardas, Russian and Ukranian folk songs and rousing dances from Romania and Moldavia as well as their own electrifying compositions, evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires. 20 Music Box Office 01688 302211

Robert Gillies Fri 27 June An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Scottish-born Robert Gillies wears his heart on his sleeve with his latest collection of songs which delve ever deeper into the heart of Americana music. Robert s unique sound is crafted from both his classical training and his love of American pop rock, which grew throughout his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and he has created sincere, positive, authentic songs which search for a close and meaningful connection with his audience music in the vein of singer-songwriters such as Damien Rice, James Taylor and Paul Simon. RM Hubbert Tues 22 July An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 RM Hubbert combines techinical prowess, flamenco guitar and gallows humour in his intimate performances, and has gained a reputation as an unmissable live performer. His Alex Kapranos-produced debut album Thirteen Lost & Found features collaborations with Alasdair Roberts, Aidan Moffat, Alex Kapranos and Emma Pollock. It, along with the follow-up Breaks & Bones, document dealing with chronic depression and the death of loved ones. HM Hubbert won the Scottish Album of the Year Award in 2013. Amy Duncan Tues 29 July An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Amy s career as a performer and song-writer hasn t exactly followed a conventional path. She began her career playing double bass, but motherhood inspired her into song writing; a fortuitous turn of events that has really seen her find her niche. Comparisons have been drawn to Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith, and Amy s emotionally charged lyrics, ambient, folk-inspired harmonies, haunting melodies and sheer range and power of her vocal apparatus are breathtaking. immediately arresting vocals Folk Radio When Amy Duncan sings there s a feeling that her emotionally charged songs are a reflection of a life lived Folk Words Angus Lyon and Duncan Lyall Fri 8 Aug An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Pianist and accordion player Angus Lyon has played with luminaries Paul McCartney and Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) while Duncan Lyall is one of the country s top bass players, currently part of Kate Rusby s band. This double bill is a reiteration of two Celtic Connections New Voices Commissions: Lyon s 3G and Lyall s Infinite Reflections. 3G is an instrumental triptych evoking the overlapping experiences of three generations, from grandfather to grandson, exploring the cyclical interplay of tradition and modernity, intended to reflect the transitions of styles and attitudes that shift over time. Infinite Reflections drew inspiration from memories, and cultural references that resonated with Lyall, exploring experiences of friendship, adventure, surrealism, love, loss, determination, grit and happiness. They perform with Patsy Reid (fiddle), Innes Watson (fiddle and guitar), Fraser Fifield (sax and whistles), Ali Hutton (pipes, whistles and guitar), Alyn Cosker (drums), Iain Sandilands (percussion) and Chas MacKenzie (guitar). 22 Music Box Office 01688 302211

Blazin Fiddles Tues 19 Aug Aros Hall 8.30pm 12/ 10 Take a group of the hottest contemporary fiddle players from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, mix with some wonderfully sympathetic keyboard and guitar arrangements and you ve got the award-winning Blazin Fiddles on your hands. And they are Blazin. In the past decade no other band has quite captured Scottish fiddle music s variety, energy and sensitivity in the way Blazin Fiddles have. Like rare single malts, each member draws the distinct flavour of music from their part of the country. Blending solo and ensemble sets, aged with the occasional insightful tale, they all come together in a fiery blend to excite your senses. From remote village halls to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, fiddlers Jenna Reid, Bruce MacGregor, Rua Macmillan and Kristan Harvey are joined by Anna Massie on guitar/fiddle and Angus Lyon on keyboard to deliver a musically intoxicating evening for all. Lauren Godfrey: Stovies, Scallops & Scabby Man s Heads Until Sat 17 May Gallery, An Tobar SCALLOPS, THREE WAYS Comar presents an exhibition and new commission by artist Lauren Godfrey. Godfrey combines objects, text and performance to address the discrepancy between the visual and the verbal in art. Food and food culture are themes she often returns to in her work, and in this, her first solo show in Scotland, she foregrounds these gourmet motifs in her choice of exhibition title. In Stovies, Scallops & Scabby Man s Heads (the name her Shetlander father gave to sea urchins) the artist explores the notions of rocks and islands and their relationship to stepping-stones, seafood and full stops. These metaphorical leaps between landscape, language and larder find their feet in the gallery where the artist s soundworks and objects climb the walls and stretch across the floor in an archipelago of sculpture. To coincide with her exhibition at An Tobar, Godfrey has been commissioned to create three new lino floor designs to remain permanently in the building. We see in them glimpses of the artist s cultural experiences of the island and its produce, images and sentences imbued with her own sense of exuberance and good humour. Following a series of research visits to the island, Halperin has found herself embarking on a rock hunt of sorts: from the world-renowned Tormore granite quarry near Fionnphort on Mull and a rumoured pier on Manhattan Island, to a stretch of melted rocks in Iona and a geothermal pool, aptly named Bloody Pond Hell. Her journey has resulted in a series of brand new artworks for Comar, exhibited at the gallery at An Tobar, where old and young rock will meet. As part of Generation, celebrating 25 years of contemporary Scottish art. Rachel Maclean: The Weepers Thurs 7 Aug 27 Sept 2014 Opening night Thurs 7 Aug, 6pm 8pm Gallery, An Tobar The Weepers is a new solo exhibition by Glasgow-based artist Rachel Maclean that reinterprets Scottish fairy and folk tale to explore themes of phantasy and gender. In this show, Maclean will present a new short film work that examines the legend of the Bean Nighe or Washer Woman, a monstrous and ominous spirit that is tasked with ringing out blood from the grave clothes of people who are close to death. Shot in various locations on Mull, as well as making use of greenscreen technology, the piece will present a darkly comic and synthetically maximal exploration of the feminine grotesque. 26 Exhibitions Box Office 01688 302211

The Three Peaks Doug Scott Sat 19 July Druimfin 7.30pm 15/ 10 (under-18s) Uncertainty of outcome is the essence of adventure, and these are tales of groundbreaking and heart-breaking adventures on the world s three highest mountains. Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest mountaineers of all time, Doug Scott shares his insights on his climbs on Everest, Kangchenjunga and K2, illustrated with his own celebrated mountain photography. Doug and Dougal Haston were the first Britons to climb Everest, and they descended without oxygen or sleeping bags the highest bivouac ever and a ground-breaking effort. He was one of the team to climb Kangchenjunga, the third ascent of the mountain, but the first without bottled oxygen and by a new route. There were several attempts at K2, despite an avalanche, a fatality and heroic rescue. All profits from the evening will be split between Doug s own charity, Community Action Nepal, and the local Roses Charitable Trust (based at Tavool House on Mull) for which Doug is a Patron. There will be a brief charity auction of framed mountain prints signed by well-known mountaineers and a raffle of local produce and goods.
