MUS Proposal to Modify Credit Hours for Music Ensembles Rationale Music ensembles at UTC are assigned one credit hour regardless of the number of rehearsals per week. Music majors are required to earn 7-8 hours of major ensemble credits for their degrees. Non-majors earn elective credits. With the move to 120 hour degree programs and restrictions on financial aid, there are disincentives for students to participate in ensembles which cost them credit hours. The solution at other universities in Tennessee and other institutions is to make the ensembles variable credit courses of 0-1 hour. This allows students to take part in the ensembles without paying tuition and fees by registering for 0 credits. If students wish to earn academic credit, they may register for 1 credit hour. This enables them to conserve scholarship dollars while still taking part in the musical opportunities available to them at the university. Courses currently assigned 1 credit hour MUS 0020r Chattanooga Singers MUS 0022r - Chamber Singers MUS 0026r Women s Chorale MUS 0027r Men s Chorus MUS 0028r Choral Union MUS 0029r Master Chorale MUS 0030r Marching Band MUS 0031r Concert Band MUS 0035r Wind Ensemble MUS 0036r Jazz Band MUS 0040r Opera Workshop MUS 0050r University Orchestra MUS 0053r Cadek Community Orchestra MUS 0061r Percussion Ensemble MUS 2010r Ensemble MUS 2011r Piano Ensemble MUS 2012r Trumpet Ensemble MUS 2013r Pep Band I MUS 2014r Pep Band II MUS 2015r Flute Ensemble MUS 2016r Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble MUS 2017r Guitar Ensemble MUS 2018r Clarinet Ensemble MUS 2019r Saxophone Quartet MUS 2020r Woodwind Quintet MUS 2021r Brass Quintet MUS 2022r Horn Ensemble MUS 2023r Trombone Ensemble MUS 2024r String Quartet MUS 2025r Chamber Music CURRENT EXAMPLE from UTC Catalog: MUS 0020r Chattanooga Singers (1) Credit Hours Study of music of all periods for large mixed chorus Every semester. Proposed revision All of the courses listed above would have variable credit of 0 hours or 1 hour. Students enrolling may elect to take the course for zero credit or 1 credit hour. For those registered for 0 credits, grades assigned will be Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC). Students enrolled for 1 credit hour will be graded A, B, C, D or F. 1

MUS Proposal to Modify Credit Hours for Music Ensembles COURSE EXAMPLE of Proposed Change: MUS 0020r Chattanooga Singers (0-1) Credit Hours Study of music of all periods for large mixed chorus Every semester Impact This will assist the Music Department in attracting and retaining musically talented and qualified UTC students in our various performing ensembles. The proposed change will not affect the resources of other UTC departments. Rather, it will assist students in completing degree and graduation requirements without concerns for the financial impact of such participation. It should be noted that the change will reduce Student Credit Hour production for ensembles in the Music Department. The degree of impact will be proportional to the number of students choosing to enroll for zero credit. Instructional Method The instructional method for the courses will not be changed by a modification in credit hours. Course Grading Students who choose to register for zero (0) credit hours will be graded Satisfactory or No Credit as is currently the case for MUS 1000/2000/3000/4000 Seminar. Students who register for 1 credit hour (the current assignment) will receive grades of A, B, C, D or F. Pedagogical Objectives The proposed change will not impact the objectives for the course. Students will rehearse and prepare for public concerts and held to performance standards regardless of the credit hours assignment. Student Learning Outcomes As the purpose of a music ensemble is linked to public performance of music, students enrolled in these ensembles will: 1) improve vocal or instrumental technique and performance skills; 2) learn a variety of concert literature appropriate for the ensemble; 3) improve their music literacy (reading notation) skills through study of repertoire. Learning Outcomes Assessment Processes Ensemble directors assess student learning outcomes through summative evaluation of performances, observation of student work in rehearsals and sectionals, formative assessment of recorded performance tests. 2

MUS Proposal to Modify Credit Hours for Music Ensembles Updated Curriculum Maps The size, nature and purposes of ensembles in the Music Department are quite diverse. While they serve not only Music majors but students from across the university, some are available to all undergraduate majors while others are limited to those selected by audition. They enable freshmen students to develop performing skills and upperclassmen to exercise leadership within a section or the ensemble as a whole, depending upon size. Ensembles touch all points of the curriculum map. Additional Information Major ensembles (e.g., Chattanooga Singers) are offered each semester, with the exception of Marching Band which is seasonal. Small ensembles are available according to instrumentation. Instructors are chosen according to individual expertise. Making these ensembles variable credit will have no impact. Clear Path Showcase A sample Clear Path Showcase for the Instrumental Music Education degree is attached. Impact of the Change on Degree Completion We believe that this will enhance student ability to complete their programs of study within time allotted while conserving scholarship funds since they may participate in ensembles without credit hour assignment. Laboratory Fee Laboratory fees are not assessed for ensembles. New Resources Required It will be necessary for the Music Department to communicate the new variable credit assigned to ensembles; however, this can be done through the department web site, course syllabi, the UTC Undergraduate Catalog and the Music Student Handbook. Sample Syllabus A sample syllabus for MUS 0026, Women s Chorale, is attached for reference. 3
