THE READING / TAPESCRIPT An exhibition to please the nose has opened at a New York museum. The Museum of Arts and Design is displaying exhibits from a collection called "The Art of Scent, 1889-2011". It highlights works by some of history's best-known perfume makers. It includes a history of ten of the world s most famous scents. A specially-designed spraying machine releases "the work of art" into the air for visitors to smell and think about. An audio guide explains how each of the perfumes was created. This is a great idea. It s surprising there hasn t been an exhibition of smells before. There have been crazy ideas like Smellivision, which might actually become a reality soon. An exhibition of perfume fragrances allows us to use something we rarely need or use in museums our nose. Smells are an important part of how we survive in life. It is interesting that we can now wander through a gallery and let our imaginations run free after sniffing different aromas. It may be more interesting than looking at art.
