Will make you want to race to the library. ~ Philadelphia Inquirer A video page-turner. ~ San Francisco Chronicle Frame from James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket. Baldwin in Switzerland, where he finished Go Tell It On The Mountain.

Film Synopsis Back in 1989, the 16mm version of BALDWIN received stellar reviews and awards. Honored at festivals in over two-dozen countries including Sundance, London, Berlin and Tokyo the film was described as "Splendid" by Variety, "A video page-turner" by The San Francisco Chronicle, and "A haunting, beautifully made biography" by the Los Angeles Times. "Stays with you after the program ends," said the New York Times. Now considered a documentary film classic, the original BALDWIN film has been restored and re-mastered in 2K HD with the help of the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts in honor of James Baldwin s 90 th birthday. An emotional portrait, a social critique, and a passionate plea for human equality, this film is a vérité feast. Without using narration, the film allows Baldwin to tell his own story: exploring what it means to be born black, impoverished, gay and gifted in a world that has yet to understand that all men are brothers. Intercutting rarely-seen archival footage from over one hundred sources and nine different countries, the film melds intimate interviews and eloquent public speeches with astounding private glimpses of Baldwin. The film also includes a rich selection of original footage: scenes from Baldwin s extraordinary funeral service; explorations of Baldwin s homes on three continents, including France, Switzerland, Turkey and Harlem; plus on-camera interviews with close friends, colleagues and critics. Witnesses include his brother David; biographer David Leeming; writers Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, William Styron, Ishmael Reed and Yashar Kemal; painter Lucien Happersberger and entertainer Bobby Short. We call it Cinéma Vérité Passé. PHOTO: James Baldwin in 1965, drinking tea from a samovar, Istanbul, Turkey. His home for a total of seven years, Istanbul was a refuge from Western racism and the place where he finished Another Country, Blues for Mister Charlie and Tell Me How Long The Train s Been Gone. Director s Statement This film has turned me into a conduit for something far greater than anything I could do or say on my own. It did so back in the late 80's when I was first working with Baldwin; it's doing so now, twenty-five years after our film was completed. Driven by Baldwin's 90th birthday (8/2/15), recent current events and an urgent need for social change, I ve put other film projects on hold and launched Conversations with Jimmy. A series of community-based collaborations, this nationwide Outreach & Engagement initiative uses our new digital BALDWIN to spark town-wide discussions about diversity, discrimination and the meaning of brotherhood in the context of local issues. The mission: to engage diverse communities, inspire dialogue despite differences, encourage citizen-activists... and to ensure that Baldwin's message of brotherhood is heard and debated by those who need it most. Baldwin Quotes from the Film There are days when you wonder what your role is in this country, and what your future is in it. If we can get past the place we are now something very important may happen in the world. You can t tell the children there s no hope.

Baldwin Quotes from the Film - 2 In the Baptist church, in which I grew up all the saved where black and all the doomed were white. But times do change. The world is held together, really it is by the love and the passion of a very few people. All men are brothers that s the bottom line.

Karen Thorsen Bio Award-winning writer/filmmaker Karen Thorsen finds inspiration at the intersection of art and social justice. Her heroes are game-changers, the artist/activists who shape history and her films tell their stories without narration, weaving first-person narratives with archival treasures. Cinéma Vérité Passé. Thorsen began as a writer. After graduating from Vassar College, with a year at the Sorbonne, she was an editor for Simon & Schuster, a journalist for LIFE Magazine, and a foreign correspondent for TIME. Screenwriting followed, then directing. Her first feature-length documentary was JAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE OF THE TICKET. Working with the renowned Maysles Films, Thorsen wrote, produced and directed BALDWIN (with Co-Producers Bill Miles & Douglas K. Dempsey, Executive Producers Susan Lacy & Albert Maysles). A co-production with PBS/American Masters, BALDWIN was honored at festivals in over two-dozen countries including Sundance, London, Berlin and Tokyo. Now considered a classic, BALDWIN was described as "Splendid" by Variety, "A video page-turner" by The San Francisco Chronicle, and "A haunting, beautifully made biography" by the Los Angeles Times. "Stays with you after the program ends," said the New York Times. Recently restored and re-mastered in 2K HD, the new digital BALDWIN is now the centerpiece of a nationwide Outreach & Engagement initiative, Conversations with Jimmy. Thorsen s second feature-length doc, JOE PAPP IN FIVE ACTS made with Co-Director Tracie Holder premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012. A PBS/American Masters & ITVS co-production, the film tells the tale of a New York street kid-turned-producer who insisted that art is for everyone, both on-stage and in the audience. From free Shakespeare in the Park to HAIR, A Chorus Line and The Normal Heart, Joe Papp consistently bucked tradition and brought more theater to more people than any other producer in history. The film s broadcast premiere will be in 2015. Beyond PBS, Thorsen productions include an Intimate Portrait for Lifetime Television (one of their top five shows of the year); a three-part series for the History Channel (winner, Parents Choice Award); numerous contributions to The Learning Channel and National Geographic; and ONE SMALL CANDLE, a documentary film history of the Pilgrims and their Native neighbors. Produced and directed with partner Douglas K. Dempsey, ONE SMALL CANDLE is now a permanent installation at Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, MA. Other collaborations with Dempsey include high-profile museum media projects (the Smithsonian Institution, George Washington s Mount Vernon ), plus two worksin-progress: PEACEJAM: CHANGE STARTS HERE, about teenage activists mentored by Nobel Laureates and THOMAS PAINE: VOICE OF REVOLUTION, a feature-length documentary & multi-media museum exhibit, recently designated a We The People project by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Along with numerous NEH awards, Thorsen has been honored by multiple grants and fellowships from Ford, NYSCA, NEA, CPB, ITVS and others.

Douglas K. Dempsey Bio An award-winning writer/filmmaker, Douglas K. Dempsey is a founding partner of DKDMedia with Karen Thorsen. Their first collaboration was THE FED, a behind-the-scenes exploration of America s financial system; it won a Cine Golden Eagle. Their second joint effort was JAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE OF THE TICKET, a feature-length biography which won awards all over the world. and is now considered a classic. Recently restored and re-mastered in 2K HD, the new digital BALDWIN is the centerpiece of a nationwide Outreach & Engagement initiative, Conversations with Jimmy. On his own, Dempsey has worked as a story editor on numerous award-winning feature films (for Producer Steven Haft and Director John Avildsen) and IMAX productions, including LIVING PLANET, FLYERS (both produced for the Smithsonian s Air & Space Museum) and SHACKLETON S ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE (winner, Best Film Award, 2005, Big Screen Association). Dempsey has also worked extensively in museum media often in collaboration with Dennis Earl Moore and Christopher Chadbourne & Associates. Credits include The Smithsonian Institution s PRICE OF FREEDOM, and the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument in Nebraska. For a full decade, Dempsey was Media Content Co-Creator/Co-Producer of DISCOVER THE REAL GEORGE WASHINGTON: two multi-media theaters, an animation film and assorted AV programs for the Museum & Education Center at George Washington s Estate in Mount Vernon (winner, THEA award). His ONE SMALL CANDLE a documentary film history of the Pilgrims made in partnership with Karen Thorsen recently became a permanent installation at Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, MA. In addition, Dempsey has also been honored as a writer and editor. His documentary narration for KEEPERS OF EDEN, a film about the Huaorani tribe in Ecuador, was performed by Joanne Woodward. Most recently, he was Writer/Editor of BURIED PRAYERS, a feature-length film about Maidanek, a Nazi death camp for Polish Jews. A story of defiance and redemption, it was narrated by artist Laurie Anderson and won Best Documentary Feature at the Cinequest Film Festival. Other collaborations with Thorsen include two works-in-progress: PEACEJAM: CHANGE STARTS HERE and THOMAS PAINE: VOICE OF REVOLUTION, a feature-length documentary & multimedia museum exhibit. Thorsen and Dempsey are Co- Directors of the James Baldwin Project, including the popular Conversations with Jimmy.
