FOR THE CLASSROOM Share the excitement of opera! Interactive workshops, tours, mainstage performances and artist residencies are among the many ways teachers can integrate opera into classroom activities. Opera Storytime K TO GR. 6 Fall, Winter, Spring Your school or the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre This workshop challenges students to learn songs, and to perform scenes and characters from famous operas. Through guided exploration, students have the opportunity to explore, to practice and to acquire new performing arts skills in this introductory workshop. Opera Storytime highlights the storytelling aspects of opera, and can easily be integrated into the literacy and language curricula in addition to music and drama classes. Accompanying study guide materials provide teachers with pre- and post-workshop information and activities. Operatic Fairytales JK to SK One Hour $175 A magical journey through the land of Once Upon a Time unfolds through music and stories from popular fairytale operas. The Enchanted Child Gr. 1 to 2 One Hour $175 Based on the opera by Maurice Ravel In a well-known story, a young boy throws a tantrum because he doesn t want to do his homework. Participants become animals, toys, numbers and other magical creatures to teach the boy the importance of kindness, responsibility and forgiveness. Rusalka Gr. 2 to 3 One Hour $175 Based on the opera by Antonín Dvo rák In a tale adapted from Hans Christian Andersen s The Little Mermaid, students enter a world of water goblins, mermaids and royalty, through Dvo rák s hauntingly beautiful music. Inspiring and delighting students across Ontario for over 20 years, the Xstrata Ensemble Studio School Tour is back for 2010 with two engaging operas, adapted or created specifically for young audiences, and performed with piano accompaniment. Cinderella Gioacchino Rossini and Jules Massenet Magic, mischief and humour abound in the tale of Cinderella s quest for true love. Featuring melodies and arias from Rossini s and Massenet s versions of the classic fairytale, this playful and colourful production is sung in both English and French. Isis and the Seven Scorpions Dean Burry In the middle of an Egyptian sandstorm, an archaeology professor is stung by a poisonous scorpion. His students must find the cure hidden in ancient hieroglyphics in the Lost Temple of Isis. In an effort to save their dying professor, the students use Isis s ancient wisdom and the power of forgiveness to avert disaster. Commissioned by the COC for the school tour in 2004, this opera is written specifically for elementary school audiences, and sung in English. NEW FOR 2010 Interactive online resources for teachers and students offer exciting pre- and post-performance opportunities to connect with and discover more about performers, composers, opera history and much more! Ariadne on Naxos Gr. 4 to 6 1.5 Hours $250 Based on the opera by Richard Strauss Traditional commedia dell arte characters mingle with personalities from the opera world and characters from Greek mythology in this opera-within-an-opera! The Rhinegold Gr. 4 to 6 1.5 Hours $250 Based on the opera by Richard Wagner Dwarves, giants and gods are just some of the magical characters that inhabit the world of The Rhinegold, the first opera in Wagner s epic Ring Cycle. While exploring this quest for an all-powerful ring, participants are introduced to Wagner s revolutionary advances in opera and the concept of leitmotifs. Students develop an understanding of opera, and gain writing, singing and acting experience. Through the process of artistic collaboration, students improve upon skills in leadership, conflict resolution and creative thinking. Teachers are encouraged to link the theme of their opera to the curriculum. programs for children After School Opera Program $10 per term Ages 7 to 12 Fall, Winter, Spring 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Now in its 13th year, the After School Opera Program gives children the opportunity to create their own mini-opera with professional artist-educators. In partnership with centres around the city, participants of this program learn the basics of opera through singing, libretto writing, drama and design. Each term culminates in a final performance for friends and family. For me this opera was like a journey because on journeys, you find new things and experience new things that you learn from Sure, most of us are going to be nervous.
