Course description, Objectives, Assessment Objectives and Assessments Objectives: The student will aurally and visually identify all major, minor and perfect intervals within the octave. The student will identify, notate or sing from notation all major, minor and perfect intervals within the octave. The student will sing with correct syllable names (fixed do) any ascending or descending interval within the octave from a given pitch. The student will aurally and visually identify and write correctly all forms of major and minor scales and Dorian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Phrygian and Locrian modes. The student will sing at sight melodies in soprano, alto, tenor and bass clefs. The students in groups will sing one, two, three and four part music in any key using fixed do syllables. The objectives for individual classes indicate the daily process involved in reaching these overall objectives. Assessment: The student will aurally and visually identify all major, minor and perfect intervals within the octave in written quizzes. The student will use all major, minor and perfect intervals within the octave to notate one and two part melodies in all major and minor keys and the Dorian and Mixolydian modes in any regular simple or compound meter. The student will use all major, minor and perfect intervals in prepared and sight singing. Grading system: Singing for a grade begins with 10 points, subtract a point for each pitch error. Dictation, 1 point for rhythm and 1 for pitch in each measure. Any error in the measure leads to the loss of the point. Points accumulate for the entire semester. The final grade is based on: 100%-90% A, 89%-80% B, 79%-70% C, 69%-60% D, below 60% R.

Durham Work will be done in class from Melodia by Samuel W. Cole and Leo R. Lewis. (It is not necessary for you to purchase this. It will be provided. Attendance Policy Since this course is based on participatory learning and involves the improvement of neuromuscular skills, regular attendance is essential. More than three unexcused absences may affect the final grade. More than five absences will result in failure. Excuses must be presented to the instructor during the class period following the absence. If a student arrives after roll has been taken, it is his/her responsibility to notify the instructor at the end of the class. Grading Policy Attendance affects grades: See above! There will be prepared sight-singing tests that will be graded. There will be unannounced sight-singing tests that will be graded. There will be dictation tests that will be graded. Arrangements to make up missed tests must be completed within one week of the scheduled test date. There will be written and individual sight singing mid-term and final tests. A student must score at least 65% on the final examination in order to pass the course. No Ds will be given as final grades. (The skills developed in this course are absolutely necessary for success in Advanced Solfege II. A D grade does not represent a satisfactory mastery of the material.) Grading Scale: percentages

100-90...A 89-80...B 79-70...C 69-60...D Below 59...R Course Description: This course is designed to improve the student s ability to analyze music aurally and to sing at sight music in traditional meters, major and minor keys, modes, written in treble, bass, alto and tenor clefs, and to notate rhythmic, melodic and harmonic patterns. The fixed do system of sol fa is used. The faculty at Carnegie Mellon University is convinced that it essential for you to be able to aurally analyze music, to sing at sight, and to notate what you have heard. I am committed to finding the best way to help you develop these skills. If you are experiencing difficulties in this class, with listening skills in your private lessons, or in learning your music for choir, orchestra or wind ensemble, I will be willing to help you assess your problems and find ways to develop the necessary skills. Please ask for help as soon as you realize that you are having problems. DO NOT WAIT!
