Conjugation Listing the different forms of a verb in the six tenses is called conjugating a verb. Consistency of Tense 18e. Do not change needlessly from one tense to another. When describing events that occur at the same time, use verbs in the same tense. In a passive sentence the main verb phrase always includes a form of be and the past participle. PASSIVE VOICE PASSIVE VOICE The show window was broken last night. Those marigolds had been planted by Lucinda. Special Problems with Verbs Sit and Set Sit means to rest in an upright, seated position or to be in a place. Set means to put (something) in a place. sit (is) sitting sat (have) sat set (is) setting set (have) set Lie and Lay Lie means to rest, to recline, or to be in a place. Lay means to put (something) in a place. lie (is) lying lay (have) lain lay (is) laying laid (have) laid Rise and Raise Rise means to go up or to get up. Raise means to lift up or to cause (something) to rise. rise (is) rising rose (have) risen raise (is) raising raised (have) raised
