Anexo técnico/technical Addendumo 4. Technical Addendum Resumo do Projecto (max. 200 palavras) Project's summary (max. 200 words) An important obligation of Portuguese philologists and linguists is the preservation, transcription, edition and study of the linguistic witnesses of the past, which are part of the cultural heritage of the Portuguese-speaking communities. Thus, this project has as its general goal the publication and the study of Primary Sources for the History of the Portuguese Language (paying particular attention to Medieval Portuguese original documents from the 9th- to 14th-centuries). The priorities of the project are (1) the discussion and publication of a set of criteria and guidelines for the publication of manuscripts (starting with medieval texts), (2) the creation of a text archive containing paleographic and normalized editions of select texts, and (3) the creation an archive of images of manuscripts (both in digital medium and in hard copy). These priorities do not in any way preclude or exclude the continuation of other types of research in which the members of Sub-Unit 4 of CLUNL are engaged in. Objectivos (max. 200 palavras) Objectives (max. 200 words) The objectives of this project come under the following general headings: 1. transcription of select medieval Portuguese primary sources 2. digitization of select medieval Portuguese primary sources 3. graphemic and linguistic study of the texts. Objective (1) requires the completion of the following general tasks: (1) inventory of the texts to be transcribed and studied, (2) creation of a set of criteria and guidelines for transcrition, transliteration and edition of medieval Portuguese texts, (3) transcription and analysis of the texts. Objective (2) requires the completion of the following general tasks: (1) photography of the manuscripts in 9x12cm slide format, (2) digitization of the slides with a high-resolution scanner, (3) print out of the digital images in high-definition hard copy, and (4) storage of the digital images and of the hard copies. From 2003 to 2005 the following specific objectives will be pursued: transcription and digitization of all 9th and 10th century original documents, and of all Portuguese documents from the Chancery of King D. Afonso III; beginning of the inventory of 12th and 13th century documents; preparations for the transcription of select groups of documents Chancery of King D. Dinis, and of several monastic scriptoria (as part of the research for one PhD dissertation). Relação com o estado da arte (max. 500 palavras) Relationship with the state of the art (max. 500 words) One of the main problems facing today the areas of Portuguese Philology and the History of the Portuguese Language is the lack of good and reliable editions of medieval primary sources for the study of the early phases of the History of Portuguese. This is specially true of non-literary prose texts, i.e. notarial documents, charters, legal codes, etc.: notarial documents have been mainly the object of interest of historians, and have been regarded mostly as historic sources rather than linguistic sources. Page 2 of 5

The editions produced by historians and traditional philologists (especially latinists) are of little use for linguistic studies: they show a high degree of editorial intervention and normalization which distort the original outlook of the texts. This situation is specially acute in the case of Latin-Portuguese documents, which have been published for historic research purposes in the 2nd half of the 19th century. More recent editions of other Latin- Portuguese charters and cartularies present the same degree of editorial intervention. These are some of the main problems facing historians of the Portuguese language: 1. our knowledge of the language of documents written between the 9th and the 13th centuries is sketchy at the most; 2. in spite of the fact that Portuguese began to be used as the language of record in the 13th century, no one knows exactly how many documents written in Old Portuguese are there from the 13th and 14th centuries, because there is no inventory, much less editions, of those documents; 3. the documents of the 12th century, whose study is crucial for the understanding of the development of Portuguese writing in the early 13th century, are virtually unknown to philologists, because there is no inventory and no one has undertaken their edition and study. If the History of the Portuguese Language is to take a leap forward it must rely on bona fide editions, i.e. editions done with the utmost care in preserving all aspects of the medieval character sets. These editions require that certain tools be created and be made available. One is a medieval font (the development of which is the object of another project presented in this programme), the other is a set of guidelines and criteria for text edition and textual corpora formatting, another still is the creation of a digital archive of high-resolution images of manuscripts. The FONTHIS project is a pioneer effort to bring about the creation of such tools, and to start the methodical edition and linguistic study of medieval Latin-Portuguese and Portuguese documents, building on previous research done by the members of Sub-Unit 4 'Philology & Historical Linguistics' of CLUNL. QUADRO 5 6. Tarefas/Tasks Designação da tarefa Duraçao da tarefa em meses Pessoas*mês Task denomination Task duration - months persons*month Task1-transcriptional and editorial guidelines 24 6 Task #1 criteria and guidelines for palaeographic and normalized editions: the creation of detailed reports containing the discussion of criteria and guidelines for publishing medieval documents in both palaeographic and normalized formats will provide researchers and scholars in the field of Portuguese Philology with a solid body of doctrine and also with useful works of reference; normalized editions of medieval texts need the application of a high number of editorial procedures which make medieval texts on the whole easier to read; thus, they are specially suited for scholars whose goal is the study of lexis, syntax, and discourse analysis; these editions are also useful and easy to handle for non-specialists or non-linguists. Since the reports will be illustrated with 20-30 texts and facsimiles they will aninvaluable tool for students of Palaeography, Diplomatics, and Medieval Portuguese. Ideally these reports should be published in book format. Task #1 criteria and guidelines for palaeographic and normalized editions: creation of detailed reports containing the discussion of criteria and guidelines for publishing medieval documents, illustrated with 20-30 Medieval Portuguese texts Task2-transcription of medieval texts 24 6 Task #2 transcription of select Medieval Portuguese texts: Latin-Portuguese documents from the 9th and 10th centuries Portuguese documents from the Chancery of King D. Afonso III (the edition of 38 Portuguese documents in paleographic and normalized formats will continue the work of two researchers of Sub-Unit 4, L. Fagundes Duarte and A. P. Banza), and will lay the groundwork for a corpus of 13c. Medieval Portuguese documents) transcription of 12th century and 13th notarial and non-dispositive documents (the edition of ca. 200 Latin- Portuguese and Proto-Portuguese documents from several monastic nuclei in palaeographic and normalized formats will prove to be a major step in understanding the emergence of an autonomous Portuguese scripta in the early 13th century) Task #2 transcription of select Medieval Portuguese texts in palaeographic and normalized formats Task3-graphemic study of medieval texts 24 3 Task #3 graphemic study Latin-Portuguese documents from the 9th and 10th centuries: the analysis of the graphemic patterns of the earliest stages of Portuguese writing will provide researchers in the area of Medieval Portuguese with a reliable account of the earliest attested stages of the History of the Portuguese Language Portuguese documents from the Chancery of King D. Afonso III: the analysis of the graphemic patterns present in the earliest stage of the administrative use of the 13th century Portuguese scripta will be the natural continuation of the work initiated 11 years ago by Ana Paula Banza, and will an important contribution to the characterization of the graphemic patterns of the earliest autonomous Portuguese scripta other documental nuclei to be added further on This task will exceed the 3 year timespan of this project submission, and will require further submissions in the next triennia. Task #3 graphemic study of Latin-Portuguese and Old Portuguese documents: analysis of the graphemic patterns present in the earliest stages of Latin-Portuguese writing and Old Portuguese writing, and of the relation thereof with the reconstructed Phonology and Morphology of Old Portuguese Task4-photography and digitization of manuscripts 12 3 Task #4 photography of a select set of manuscripts in the National Archive (Instituto dos Arquivos Nacionais/Torre do Tombo) in 9x12cm slide format, followed by digitization of the slides with a high-resolution scanner. The digitization of ca. 250 documents will form the basis for a future Digital Archive of Portuguese Manuscripts; the reproduction of manuscripts in a high-resolution image files (which can be printed in highdefinition colourproofs) will create an invaluable tool for the study of medieval Portuguese manuscripts; it will ensure the preservation and accessibility of the manuscripts without the need to consult the originals, and will also be a powerful teaching aid for graduate courses in Portuguese Historical Linguistics.
