LET ME PUT MY CARDS ON THE TABLE, I'M AN OPERA NUT. THAT S WHY I M THRILLED THAT LIMELIGHT IS PARTNERING WITH PALACE OPERA & BALLET AND WHY I M DELIGHTED TO ENDORSE THE EXCITING SEASON AHEAD. In recent years opera lovers have become spoiled for choice with an increasing range of top cinema offerings. Safe repertoire at home can now be supplemented with lesser-known fare abroad, while star singers who would break the budgets of a state opera company can be seen most weekends in the comfort of a cinema seat. Palace Opera & Ballet have been a front-runner in the field from the start, and their 2016 programme is a savvy mix of staple works, rare opportunities and stellar voices making role debuts. Two of the most anticipated have to be Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel as master and devil in Berlioz s Damnation of Faust from Paris, and then the mighty Welsh baritone making his role debut as the tortured Tsar in Mussorgsky s epic Boris Godunov. Diana Damrau and directed by theatrical genius Katie Mitchell have to be must-sees. Star turns from La Scala include Anna Netrebko going to the stake in Verdi s Giovanna D Arco and Diana Damrau in La Traviata. The Parisian house will see Netrebko in Il Trovatore envisioned by Àlex Ollé from iconoclastic theatre company La Fura dels Baus. Balletomanes have some treats in store with a triple bill of Robbins, Millepied and Balanchine from Paris and Carlos Acosta s new ballet adaptation of Bizet s Carmen from the Royal Ballet. But perhaps the most anticipated will be Covent Garden s world premiere of Frankenstein, Liam Scarlett s new full-length ballet inspired by Mary Shelley s Gothic masterpiece. You can expect to see me there! Direct from London THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE The Royal Opera, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, is one of the world s leading opera companies. Based in London s iconic Royal Opera House (1858) in Covent Garden, it is renowned both for its outstanding performances of traditional opera and for commissioning new works by today s leading opera composers, such as Harrison Birtwistle, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Thomas Adès. Some of the world's most famous singers have performed with the Company, including Plácido Domingo, Angela Gheorghiu, Anna Netrebko, Renée Fleming, Bryn Terfel, Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazón and Juan Diego Flórez, as well as the late Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. Also based at the Royal Opera House, The Royal Ballet, led by Kevin O'Hare, is Britain s largest ballet company. The Company has a wide-ranging repertory showcasing the great classical ballets, heritage works from Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton and Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan, as well as new works by the foremost choreographers of today. There are plenty of hits returning (try David McVicar s beautiful Marriage of Figaro and Richard Eyre s iconic Traviata), but a Covent Garden staging of Cav and Pag from Damiano Michieletto (he of the controversial William Tell ) and a new Lucia di Lammermoor starring Clive Paget Editor, Limelight Magazine 4 5

The simple exterior reserves the opulence for within: statues of Verdi, Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti (who all gave premieres of the first performances of their work here) preside over the neo-classical foyer, tiers of red, gold and white boxes encircle the auditorium and massive fluted columns frame the stage. Apart from its sheer beauty and size, La Scala's acoustics are said to be perfect. One of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world, the venue is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre, as well as the La Scala Theatre Academy. The exceptional Teatro La Fenice (the Phoenix) in Venice first opened in 1792 to replace the Teatro San Benedetto, destroyed by fire in 1774. La Fenice itself has twice been badly damaged by fire. In 2003 the theatre was restored, closely following the Meduna brothers 1837 design. Known worldwide for its dramatic beauty, La Fenice is also known for being the cradle of many great operas. It was the site of the infamous fiasco at the premiere of La Traviata, and of the great triumphs of Tancredi, Ernani and Rigoletto that helped launch the careers of Rossini and Verdi. Inaugurated in 1740, Turin's grand opera house, Teatro Regio Torino, hosted the world premieres of Puccini s Manon Lescaut and La Bohème, and the Italian premiere of Strauss s Salome. Destroyed by fire in 1936, the amazing new Carlo Mollinodesigned building was opened in 1973. Taking its current name at the advent of the republic, Rome s beautiful opera house, Teatro dell Opera di Roma was first inaugurated in 1880, as Teatro Costanzi. This iconic venue hosted the world premiere of Mascagni s Cavalleria Rusticana and Puccini s Tosca among others. 12 13

Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto, based on a play by Victor Hugo, was his best opera. Between the frivolous, licentious Duke (brilliant American tenor Michael Fabiano), and Gilda (Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko), a victim of the ignorance which holds her captive, stands the double-faceted character of the hunchback Rigoletto (Quinn Kelsey), monstrous and heartrending, grotesque and sublime.
