CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study One of people s needs in their life is entertainment. People always try to realize or not and to fulfill the need of entertainment. They have their own reason of gathering such satisfying entertainment. The boring daily business probably takes the highest rank of the people s reason for having such an entertainment. They need something; an activity, or even an action that may cause a joy for the doer considered as an entertainment. The writer realizes that everybody has a different taste in choosing the proper entertainment for their own. For certain people, watching someone else s activities may be considered as something amusing. In other side, a group of people prepare themselves, purposely, to have time to joy such an entertainment. There is such a similarity in everybody, however, that he will not be satisfied only with a single kind of entertainment. He always tries to fulfill his passion of entertainment by seeking another one and another one. Man is a social creature. For this classical reason, people need not only a private entertainment but also something considered as a public entertainment. This reason probably tries to represent someone s need of interaction in such a social group; meanwhile, they are enjoying the entertainment. The most popular public entertainment, at least in Indonesia, is the movie. In every chance of interaction, people as a social creature need a 1

contact with other people. Conversation is playing its role by mean of language. It is rules for everybody. A person needs to talk to his friend, parents, and family and even to stranger. One thing that commonly happens in a conversation between one participant with another in a context of situation is when one of them asks the other one to do something for him. This context of situation is named requesting. In requesting someone also asks the ability of someone else to do what he or she is asking to. For this situation, someone asking is hoping someone else s response. In the film of Spider man 1, it was found various types of request employed by the character in the film. The variants of the request are influenced by the purposes of the request used in the film. The following example will give a clear understanding about it. May : So, May will make it very special for Marry Jane. Do something that she will never forget. Give her this ring, come on take it. Peter Parker : (take the ring) The example above shows a request for offering, It can be seen from the utterance of May which is offering such thing to Peter parker, and then Peter Parker accepts May s offering and appreciates it by taking the ring from her. The form of the request Give her this ring, come on take it is imperative sentence because in here the sentence is used to ask somebody else to do something. This sentence is marked by the use of verb 1 Give in the initial part of the sentence as the predicate of that sentence and followed by object her. 2

May: I hope you are going to say in a proper proposal, your uncle had it all planned He took me to the beach on Sunday. he was so knock out with his plants and I am not too bad my self we were very good swimmers.it was a beautiful day and he said lets swim to the island, at the island we find a perfect place near an old trees and we lay down and look up on the sky and then he said close your eyes May and I said Alright. From the utterance Close your eyes may shows that a request for action which is a request that ask someone to do something. The request is said by Ben, he asks May to close her eyes and than May close her eyes because he wants to give surprise to May. The form of request above is imperative form, because he asks May to take such action which is closing her eyes.this sentence is marked by the use of verb 1 close in the initial part of the sentence as the predicate of that sentence. As most people know and realize that in action movie, the situation is dominated by the sequences of thrill. The setting could be an open fire, a battle between the groups of good and evil one. It is not a wonder that sometimes people find a character of commander and officer in lower rank in another side, consequently, in this context of situation, the use of such a speech act which is like a command is preferable than the request itself. In facts, several request or used in certain dialogue, monologue or narration, but also by the setting, expression, and mimic. They help the audience to understand the real situation of the sequence. The style of criminal in spy setting, for instance, will be shown in a different style from the criminal in a gangster movie. 3

Based on that phenomenon, it is interesting to do a research that is dealing with the use of requesting in an action movie. Moreover, the movie chosen here is SPIDERMAN 1. B. Previous Study To prove the originality of this research, the writer presents the previous study dealing with this topic. Nugroho (2006) conducted his research about a socio-pragmgatic analysis of love expression in drama movie. The result of analysis shows that, first, there are three forms of love expression used in drama movies, and they are word, phrase, and sentence. Second, the intentions of love expressions are reassuring, requesting, asserting, suggesting, admiring, declaring greeting, and committing. Next,Widowati (2007) did her research about A Socio-pragmatic Analysis of Offering Acts in movie manuscript. The aims of the research are to clarify the form of offering acts, and describing the politeness strategy used in offering acts. Here, the writer wants to do research about the request in action movie SPIDERMAN 1. The differences between the researches done by the writer with the previous researchers are the writer studies the request expression in action movie. While, the previous researcher Nugroho studies the love expression in drama movie and the other researcher Widowati studies the offering acts in movie manuscript. 4

C. Problem Statement Based on the background above, the writer arranges the problem statement as follows: 1. What are the forms of the request in action movie Spiderman 1? 2. What are the purposes of the request in action movie Spiderman 1? D. Objective of the Study Based on the research problems, the writer has some objectives of the study, they are: 1. To explain the form of request in action movie Spiderman 1. 2. To identify dealing with the purposes of the request in action movie Spiderman 1. E. Limitation of the Study In this research, the writer only focuses on the purposes of utterances of request by referring to Tsui s classification of request and the form of utterances by referring to Peccei s forms of request theory. F. The Benefit of the Study The research would be beneficial to: 1. Practical Benefit a. This research will give more understanding to the readers that people may utter request in many way. 5

b. This research will give more information to the readers about the request. 2. Academic Benefit a. For English Department Student To enable understanding the pragmatic study particularly or the language style that is used in request. b. This research will be the additional reference for further research especially in request. G.
