NEWSLETTER OF THE June 2017 SVAS Next Meeting: Sunday July 9, 2017 at Harry s Hofbrau The Peter Di Bono Trio -has been serenading Bay Area audiences for over 25 years. Venues range from an elegant wedding on Nob Hill, to a forest picnic in Carmel Valley. The music covers a very wide spectrum from Broadway to Bach, and back. The trio was selected to perform at the gala dinner celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the introduction of the song, I Left My heart In San Francisco. The performance took place in The Venetian Room of The Fairmont Hotel where Tony Bennet, who was in attendance, introduced the iconic piece 50 years before. Violinist, Harriet Newhart is equally comfortable playing Mozart, Mancini, or marches. Classically trained on piano and violin at The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Harriet brings such warm vitality to her music that she has been a favorite of San Francisco audiences and musicians for her entire career. The bass player is Steve Hanson. Steve was raised on the family farm in Minnesota, and as soon as he was of age, he joined the United States Navy. He auditioned for and was accepted into the Navy Band playing horn. Steve eventually was transferred to Naples, Italy spending the majority of his naval career there, where he became fluent in Italian. Steve's bass playing style and all around musicality keeps him one of the busiest musicians in the entire Bay Area. Peter Di Bono has played nearly every type of music, and in every setting imaginable. Performances include musical theater and guest soloist with Bay Area symphony orchestras. A winner of many musical competitions, Peter won the then version of America s Got Talent while in high school as well as The Bank Of America Award for music. His many musical styles include classical, jazz, Italian, French, German You name it, I do it!. Peter has an active teaching practice with over 20 students, and is on faculty with The Community Music Center in San Francisco. Bob Stanfields Sunday 7 Band will start off this meeting. Accordionists who want to play solo/duo contact Pam, Ken, Scott or Lou to schedule VISIT OUR WEBSITE at SVASociety.org and visit us on Facebook Watch our Videos on: youtube

SILICON VALLEY ACCORDION SOCIETY JUNE 2017 Page 2 Dear Members of SVAS, Ken Caple President I want to thank everyone for the support we have had with the new Membership structure and the increase of our regular Membership fee. We look like we are out-of -the woods on our finances with these changes. We all love to hear and play accordion music and our little club is the ideal way to insure that this continues. I want to encourage everyone to reach out to your friends and the Community to invite them to join us on Sundays. We were a little short handed this Sunday with Bill chasing bears in the mountains and Scott Williamson off our grid. Special thanks to Scott Bader for setting up the sound system and room all by himself. We had a little confusion with individual players this month with some cancellations. I was able to recruit some willing parties during our Jam Band. That s the nice thing about having the jam sessions, there are always musicians warmed up and ready to go. Thank you Don, Collette, Sue and Ron for playing for us. I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT NEXT MONTH WE WILL BE MEETING ON THE SECOND SUNDAY, JULY 9, 2016. Bill Tapogna Master of Ceremonies Collette Ogata played Return to Me. It was the second time we have heard from Collette. She said she was nervous, but it didn t show. Excellent job, Collette. Ron Harris played a few tunes, one being Up the Lazy River. Ron has done a terrific job of switching to a smaller accordion and mastering it. Don Savant was commandeered to entertain and did a fine job. We loved those minor chords. They fit so well with his easy listening style. Marcia Coullahan Reporter Sue Douglas kicked off our program with an upbeat collection of songs, namely Julida Polka, When Your Smiling, Happy Wonderer, and Beer Barrel Polka. These tunes match Sue s vivacious personality. Did you miss a meeting performance? You can view some of it on youtube. To View Pam s Videos from past meetings: Go to youtube.com, type in accordionpam in the search field (next to the magnifying glass on top) for videos from the club.

SILICON VALLEY ACCORDION SOCIETY JUNE 2017 Page 4 Our treasurer, Bob Stanfield, put in hours collating a new jam book. Thanks Bob for all your effort. Some of the songs were familiar and some required site reading, at least for some of us. Our headliner, Gordon Kohl, joined us and added a lot to the program using a variety of fills and sometimes a swing beat. We were fortunate to have some volunteers to play later as solos as we did not have scheduled performers in the later period. Thanks to all of you who entered the raffle. It s just one more way to support our club. The winners were George Ford, Rosemary Busher, Mei Lu, Dennis Judd, Ken Caple and George Chavez Welcome New Members: Cathy Chapman, Elaine and Robert Cooperstein, Yvonne & Don Miller, Steve Marshall, Rosemary Busher

SILICON VALLEY ACCORDION SOCIETY JUNE 2017 Page 7 Gordon Kohl is an Accordionist Extraordinaire. He certainly demonstrated all that could be done with the Concerto accordion. He played one beautiful song after another, with very smooth transitions. We enjoyed hearing about his background. Gordon played 16 years in a polka band, played barn dances where a barn would be raised, composes, and teaches. Teaching is his first love. It was interesting to learn that Disney made good use of the accordion. He had 12 accordionists. Accordions were played in Colors of the Wind, and Frozen. Gordon played some Disney tunes, plus old favorites Misty, Last Dance, and The Godfather. He played The Girl from Ipanema which can be played with 17 instruments or one. It s just a personal preference. Gordon stated that the accordion is the most versatile instrument. It can play pops, jazz, oldies, classical, but ethnic is a must for the accordion. We truly enjoyed Amazing Grace played with several different beats and fills. Gordon ended with Phantom of the Opera showing his ability to bellow shake. We hope to hear Gordon in the future. He will be at Cotati in August. He encourages everyone who plays the accordion to play 20 minutes [ 20 minutes only] for groups of young children. It will encourage them to consider playing an accordion. We do enjoy seeing and listening to young players and want the accordion to live on forever! Gordans play time ran over to almost 5:00 and he had a sell out on his CD s. He promised to send more up to SVAS so people could get them who were shorted. Attn: All Accordionists Please contact Pam or any Board Member to schedule a play time At the club. We want to hear you play. Request an early slot or a later one Cotati tickets on sale now at SVAS 1 day ticket is $ 15.00 2 day ticket is $ 25.00 This is a $ 4.00 per ticket savings off the gate prices.
