2016-2017 Knightshine Knightshine is a select Show Choir that sings a variety of music including Madrigals, Contemporary Christian, Classical Sacred and Art songs, Broadway and Pop songs. Choreography is included in many of the songs. One goal of the group is to serve as a Public Relations tool for The King s Academy by performing throughout the community at churches, nursing homes and other venues. The type of music and programs for the year include the following: First Semester: We will learn an arrangement of The National Anthem that we will sing throughout the year before home football games and other athletic events. Fall Advance: This is tentatively scheduled for August 20-21 at Redwood Glenn Camp. We spend the time working with our choreographer as well as learning vocals to some of our music. TKA Knights Legacy Fundraiser, October 1: They normally perform at this evening event. Sacred Sounds Concert, October 6: We will sing a variety of sacred pieces for this concert, including at least one a cappella piece, a gospel or praise and worship type piece, and a contemporary Christian song that would be choreographed. Christmas Shows: We will prepare a 20-25 minute show using a variety of music and choreography that we could present throughout the community. Last year, we sang at retirement homes, Christmas Teas and Luncheons, and other events for area groups. Choral Christmas Concert, December 2: We will sing some of the songs from the Christmas Show in our Choral Department Concert as well as sing one or more combined songs [non-choreographed] with The King s Chorus. Second Semester Winter Advance: This is tentatively scheduled for January 13-16, 2017. California Music Educator s Association Solo and Ensemble Contest: This is usually either the last Saturday or February or the first Saturday of March. The entire group will sing a Madrigal style/art song and have the opportunity to perform in smaller groups at this adjudicated event. Also, members will be given the option of singing a classical art song in the solo portion of this event. Soloists and ensembles who receive a Superior rating or higher will be eligible to compete at the CMEA State Solo and Ensemble competition in Sacramento in May (normally the second Saturday in May). Show Choir Competitions: Knightshine will compete in two large Show Choir Competitions in Southern California. Dates will be announced in the fall. These are typically 2-3 day weekend events February to April. Spring Concert, May 12: The Spring Concert will be presented by all choirs and orchestra and will consist of a variety of music throughout the decades. Most of the songs that Knightshine sings at this concert are choreographed. Outside rehearsals/expectations: The majority of rehearsals take place during class time. Occasionally, it will be necessary to schedule additional rehearsals after school or on Saturdays. These extra rehearsals are usually to work with our choreographer from Southern California. In the past, these outside rehearsals have been limited to two or three days in the fall and two or three days in the spring. We also have two Advances (working retreats) which will be held August 20-21, 2016 and January 13-16, 2017.

Expenses: We are blessed at the school to have a budget that provides for many of the expenses of the year, including music, choreographer and accompanist fees, contest and festival registration fees, and much of the outfit expenses. Individual student charges include the following: Dance shoes (approximately $50). Girls wear 2 t-strap camel dance shoes and boys wear black jazz oxfords. These shoes are worn every year, and so students will get a lot of use out of these if they are in the group for several years. Many times these shoes may also be appropriate for the musical. For the past few years, the shoes have cost $50. TKA Performing Arts Fee ($200). The group will most likely have at least two performance outfits. Each outfit usually costs over $150. The two outfits are owned by TKA; this $200 fee helps us maintain our costumes by supplementing new purchases and cleaning and repair of current outfits. This fee is listed on the TKA website and is payable at the beginning of the year and is billed by the Business Office. Knightshine Participation Fee ($600) This fee is over and above the school participation fee and is billed by the VPA Department in October. VPA fundraising opportunities and sample donation letters will be provided to support student efforts to raise the funds for this fee. This fee pays for charter bus rental, hotel charges and other expenses for competitions and advances. We understand that parents are paying a substantial amount for students to attend our school, and with some of the uncertainty of our present economy, we do not want any talented student to miss the opportunity to take part in the group due to cost. Please be assured we will work with you to try and obtain scholarship money or explore fundraising options if necessary. VPA Financial Aid applications are available from Mrs. Rhonda Irwin, VPA Administrative Assistant. Auditions: Auditions for the 2015-2016 Knightshine will be held after school on Monday, May 23. Audition includes: Submitting a completed an application packet Singing a solo (supply either an accompaniment CD or sheet music for the provided accompanist) Learning and dancing some choreography with a small group during the audition. CAN YOU BE IN KNIGHTSHINE AND PLAY SPORTS? YES!! While both Knightshine and sports are a very large commitment, it is possible to play in one or more sports and be a member of Knightshine. Our Fall Advance is scheduled on a Saturday/Sunday when there is no JV or Varsity football game. We do our best to schedule concerts when they do not clash with games and meets. There are bound to be some conflicts but the coaches and Mr. Sluyter work very hard to avoid those and work out compromises as long as you, the Knightshine member keep on top of your schedules and make sure any conflicts are noted as far in advance as possible to allow compromises to be worked out. If you or your parents have questions about any of the details outlined here or other things concerning the group, please contact Mr. Sluyter in S-2 or by email: Jim.Sluyter@tka.org.
