SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS 1 Read Instructions A the safety and operating instructions shoud be read before the unit is operated. CONNECTIONS Before attempting to make any connections to or from this unit, be sure to first switch OFF the power to this unit and to any other components to which connections are being made. When making connections between this unit and other components, be sure a connections are made correcty, that is to say L (eft) to L, R (right) to R, + to + and to. SWITCHED OUTLETS (U.K. and Austraia modes)...1 SWITCHED OUTLET Use these to connect the power cords from your components to this unit. The power to the SWITCHED outets is controed by this unit s POWER switch or the provided remote contro transmitter s POWER key. These outets wi suppy power to any component whenever this unit is turned on. The maximum power (tota power consumption of components) that can be connected to the SWITCHED AC OUTLETS is 1 watts. 5

CONNECTING SPEAKERS Connect the SPEAKERS terminas to your speakers with wire of the proper gauge, cut as short as possibe. If the connections are fauty, no sound wi be heard from the speakers. Make sure that the poarity of the speaker wires is correct, that is, + and markings are observed. If these wires are reversed, the sound wi be unnatura and wi ack bass. Do not et the bare speaker wires touch each other and do not et them touch the meta parts of this unit as this coud damage this unit and/or speakers. One or two speaker systems can be connected to this unit. If you connect ony one speaker system, connect it to either the SPEAKERS A or B terminas. Use speakers with the specified impedance shown on the rear of this unit. <U.S.A., Canada and Genera modes ony> Banana Pug connections are aso possibe. Simpy insert the Banana Pug connector into the corresponding termina. How to Connect: Red: positive (+) Back: negative ( ) 1 ➀ Unscrew the knob. ➁ Insert the bare wire. [Remove approx. 5mm (1/ ) insuation from the speaker wires.] ➂ Tighten the knob and secure the wire. ABOUT THE OTHER REAR PANEL PARTS REMOTE CONTROL () connector If you have a YAMAHA turntabe with a termina for remote contro, connect it to this connector by using the cabe provided with the turntabe. This connection aows you to contro the turntabe from the provided remote contro transmitter. GND termina (For turntabe use) Connecting the ground wire of the turntabe to this termina wi normay minimize hum, but in some cases better resuts may be obtained with the ground wire disconnected. AX-59 ony PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminas Removing the jumper pins enabes this unit to independenty perform the functions of a contro ampifier and a power ampifier. These terminas are for connection of a signaprocessing system such as a graphic equaizer or sound processor. If a sound processor or other externa unit is connected between these terminas, the VOLUME contro of this unit can be used for overa adjustment of the eve of sound. To connect such a unit, remove the jumper pins from the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminas, connect the inputs of that unit to the PRE OUT terminas and its outputs to the MAIN IN terminas. For detais, refer to the owner s manua incuded with the unit to be connected. Notes PRE OUT COUPLER MAIN IN If you wi not use the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminas, never remove the jumper pins from these terminas. If removed, no sound wi be output from this unit. If you wi use this unit with an externa unit connected between the PRE OUT and MAIN IN terminas, make sure that the CD DIRECT AMP switch and the PURE DIRECT switch on the front pane are turned off. If you wi use this unit as a power ampifier, connect the outputs of an externa contro ampifier etc. to this unit s MAIN IN terminas. In that case, this unit s contros wi not function except the PHONES jack and the SPEAKERS switches, so use the contros on the externa contro ampifier to make voume adjustment etc.

POWER * If you use two speaker systems, press both the A and B switches. 5 Pay the source. VOLUME Seect a desired input source. INPUT CD TAPE 1 TUNER TAPE 5 7 db Adjust to the desired output eve. * AX-59 ony If you seect turntabe as an input source ( position), you shoud confirm that the (MM/MC) switch on the rear pane is set to the position corresponding to the type of cartridge being used by the turntabe. (Refer to page.) 7 If desired, adjust the BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS contros, etc. (Refer to page 9 1.) To turn off the power Press the POWER switch again. 7

AX-59 1, 5 AX-9 1, 5 TO RECORD A SOURCE TO TAPE (OR DUB FROM A TAPE TO ANOTHER) 1 Seect the source to be recorded. AX-59 AX-9 Set the tape deck to be used for recording in the recording mode. REC OUT CD TAPE 1 TUNER TEAP REC OUT TAPE 1 CD TUNER TAPE 5 To monitor the sound to be recorded (or being recorded), seect the tape deck being used for recording with the INPUT seector. INPUT TAPE 1 CD TUNER Pay the source. TAPE Confirm the source by seecting it with the INPUT seector and turning up the VOLUME contro. TAPE TAPE 1 INPUT CD TUNER 5 7 VOLUME Notes If you want to enjoy another source whie recording, seect it with the INPUT seector. VOLUME, BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE, LOUDNESS contros, CD DIRECT AMP switch and PURE DIRECT switch settings have no effect on the materia being recorded. db

Adjusting the BALANCE contro Adjust the baance of the output voume to the eft and right speakers to compensate for sound imbaance caused from speaker ocation or istening room conditions. Seecting the SPEAKER system Because one or two speaker systems can be connected to this unit, the SPEAKERS switches aow you to seect speaker system A or B, or both at once. This contro is adjustabe to retain fu tona range at any voume eve. 1 AX-59 AX-9 AX-9 BASS BASS 5 5 : Turn this cockwise to increase (or countercockwise to decrease) the ow frequency response. TREBLE : Turn this cockwise to increase (or countercockwise to decrease) the high frequency response. TREBLE 5 5 LOUDNESS FLAT db 9 5 7 5 7 LOUDNESS FLAT db 9 5 7 VOLUME Set to the FLAT position. Using the PURE DIRECT switch You can enjoy the purest possibe sound from your audio sources by setting this switch so that the indicator iuminates. By doing so, the audio signas bypass the BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS contros, thus eiminating any aterations to the audio signas. AX-59 ony * The SUBSONIC FILTER switch and the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminas are aso bypassed. PURE DIRECT Using the CD DIRECT AMP switch You can enjoy the purest possibe CD sound from your CD payer by setting this switch so that the indicator iuminates. By doing so, CD s input signas are sent to the buit-in ampifier specia for CD directy bypassing the INPUT seector, BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS contros, and then sent to the power ampifier. This signa routing reproduces the purest CD sound eiminating any aterations to the CD signas. AX-59 ony * The SUBSONIC FILTER switch and the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminas are aso bypassed. REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER The remote contro transmitter provided with this unit is designed to contro a the most commony used functions of the unit. If the CD payer, tuner, turntabe and tape deck connected to this unit are YAMAHA components designed for remote contro compatibiity, then this remote contro transmitter wi aso contro various functions of each component. KEY FUNCTIONS For Contro of This Unit Turns the power on/off. POWER PLAY/CUT SKIP PLAY CD SEARCH PAUSE/STOP DISC SKIP PRESET + A/B/C/D/E TUNER DIR A DECK A/B DIR B TAPE 1 PLAY TAPE Seects input source. REC/PAUSE STOP REC MUTE VOLUME + Turns the voume eve up/down. For Other Component Contro Identify the remote contro transmitter keys with your component s keys. If these keys are identica, their function wi be the same. On each key function, refer to the corresponding instruction on your component s manua. Starts/stops record pay on turntabe. STANDBY mode (U.K. and Europe modes ony) Whie the power is on, pressing the POWER key on the remote contro transmitter switches the unit to the STANDBY mode. (In this mode, the indicator is haf iuminated.) Note The POWER switch on the front pane of this unit shoud be turned off when eft unused for a ong period of time. Repace both batteries with new ones. Notes Use ony AA, R, UM- batteries for repacement. Be sure the poarities are correct. (See the iustration inside the battery compartment.) Remove the batteries if the remote contro transmitter wi not be used for an extended period of time. If batteries eak, dispose of them immediatey. Avoid touching the eaked materia or etting it come in contact with cothing, etc. Cean the battery compartment thoroughy before instaing new batteries. Within approximatey m (19.7 feet) Notes There shoud be no arge obstaces between the remote contro transmitter and the main unit. If the remote contro sensor is directy iuminated by strong ighting (especiay an inverter type of fuorescent amp etc.), it might cause the remote contro transmitter not to work correcty. In this case, reposition the main unit to avoid direct ighting. 1

TROUBLESHOOTING If the unit fais to operate normay, check the foowing points to determine whether the faut can be corrected by the simpe measures suggested. If it cannot be corrected, or if the faut is not isted in the SYMPTOM coumn, disconnect the power cord and contact your authorized YAMAHA deaer or service center for hep. SYMPTOM The unit fais to turn on when the POWER switch is pressed. No sound. The sound suddeny goes off. Ony one side speaker outputs the sound. There is a ack of bass, and no ambience. Sound hums. Sound eve is ow. Sound eve is ow or sound is distorted whie paying a record on the turntabe. (For AX-59 ony) The INPUT seector wi not function though it is turned. Using the BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE, LOUDNESS contros and SUBSONIC FILTER switch (AX-59 ony) does not affect the tone. The remote contro transmitter does not work. The distance or range within which the remote contro transmitter can be used decreases. CAUSE Power cord is not pugged in or is not competey inserted. Incorrect output cord connections. Appropriate input source is not seected. The SPEAKERS switches are not set propery. Speaker connections are not secure. The protection circuit has functioned because of short circuit etc. Incorrect setting of the BALANCE contro. Incorrect cord connections. The + and wires are connected in reverse at the ampifier or speakers. Incorrect cord connections. No connection from the turntabe to the GND termina. The LOUDNESS contro is functioning. The (MM/MC) switch on the rear of this unit is set to the improper position. The CD DIRECT AMP switch is ON. The CD DIRECT AMP or PURE DIRECT switch is ON. Direct sunight or ighting (of an inverter type of fourescent amp etc.) is striking the remote contro sensor of the main unit. The batteries of this remote contro transmitter are too weak. REMEDY Firmy pug in the power cord. Connect the cords propery. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Seect an appropriate input source with the INPUT seector. Set the SPEAKERS switch which corresponds to the speakers to be used to the ON position. Secure the connections. Turning the unit off and then on wi reset the protection circuit. Adjust it to the appropriate position. Connect the cords propery. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Connect the speaker wires in the correct phase (+ and ). Firmy connect the audio pugs. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Make the GND connection between the turntabe and this unit. Set the LOUDNESS contro to the FLAT position. Reset the (MM/MC) switch to the proper position. Switch off the CD DIRECT AMP switch. The CD DIRECT AMP and PURE DIRECT switches must be switched OFF to use those contros. Change position of the main unit. Repace the batteries with new ones. 1
