They can: refer to the subject or object in the sentence refer to a singular or plural noun Examples of Possessive Pronouns: Number Person Gender (Of "Owner") Possessive Pronouns 1 st Male/Female Refers to Object Mine Singular 2 nd Male/Female Yours 3 rd Female Hers Male His Neuter Its 1 st Male/Female Ours Plural 2 nd Male/Female Yours 3 rd Male/Female/Neuter Theirs Page 4

Remember: Possessive pronouns are used according to: number: singular (e.g.: mine) or plural (e.g.: ours) person: 1st person (e.g.: mine), 2nd person (e.g.: yours) or 3rd person (e.g.: his) gender: male (his), female (hers) Examples: 1. I like your laptop. Do you like mine? (object = laptop) 2. All the robots were good but his was the best. (subject = robots) 3. The engineers liked your plan. Do you like theirs? (object =plan) 4. Many reports were submitted early. Hers came in earliest. (subject = reports) 5. Their process needs improvement. Ours do not. (subject = process) Comprehension Check: How do you use possessive pronouns as subject in a sentence? Write one sentence that uses a possessive pronoun as a subject. Page 5
