2018 AT TAM ROAR! THE YEAR OF THE WOMAN If I be waspish, best beware my sting! Katherina, The Taming of the Shrew Dear Friends, Season 49 celebrates wily, wicked, and wonderful women through classic literature s most fantastic females. From fierce matriarchs to unfaithful wives and every Madonna in-between, Roar! The Year of the Woman spotlights the ladies who move mountains for their families, friends, and most importantly, themselves. Taking on tyrants, freeloaders, and faithless frauds these femme fatales fight for what they believe in, charting a course to a better world. During the latter half of 2017, we witnessed a significant shift in our national dialogue, thanks to courageous women speaking up and speaking out about mistreatment by men in power. How could I have known, slightly more than a year ago, that the 2018 season might actually be a celebration rather than a call to action? In Twelfth Night, Viola, Olivia, and Maria tackle the agency of women in a world where hierarchy reins; in sycophantic men placate the king in their quest for power, but it is the women who ultimate take him down; Enchanted April demonstrates how an unlikely sisterhood can bring about real change; the mystery-thriller, Dial M for Murder, exposes the fragility of the bonds of matrimony; and Pride@Prejudice provides hope of a true partnership in Austen s classic story of love conquering all, including class. This season s Family Show, The True Story of Little Red, shatters the stereotypes of damsel in distress and little old ladies needing help to cross the street. Shakespeare s plays are filled with dynamic female roles and while they were played by men and boys during his life, these creations are no less dynamic, have no less agency, and exhibit no less strength when they are played by woman today. It is my great hope that the plays of Season 49 will engage audiences in a dialogue on gender and sexual agency in our modern world. Won t you join us for the ride?
